It's rare for rookie wide receivers to come into this league and make the impression that A.J. Green made. While setting franchise records for yards receiving, Green became the first rookie wide receiver voted into the Pro Bowl since Anquan Boldin in 2003. He's also the Bengals rookie voted into the Pro Bowl since Cris Collinsworth in 1981, joining Isaac Curtis and Lemar Parrish in franchise history.
That being said, he still has a lot of work to do.

Offensive coordinator Jay Gruden spent time with Lance McAlister and Dave Lapham on 700 WLW's Bengals Line Monday night talking about what Green needs to do to continue improving.
"A.J. needs to do a lot," said Gruden. "He's an unquestionable incredibly gifted athlete and he can make the circus catch all of the time. But he needs a lot of work as far as route running versus certain looks. Bump and run coverage, cloud coverage (zone where the cornerback sits in the flats), there's a lot of things he needs to improve on. His releases. Finding holes in the zones. His depth has to be more consistent on his routes, not rounding out of breaks. As far as going up and getting the ball, heck I wouldn't trade him up for anybody. But he does have to improve a lot on his route running."
Green is expected to workout with Detroit's Calvin Johnson and Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald over the offseason to improve his skills, such as route running. The rookie finished the season with 65 receptions, 1,057 yards receiving and seven touchdowns.

Looks like Gruden has some pretty high standards.
I like it.
TCfromDubVee - January 11, 2012
standards?!?
What are those? Hopefully he teaches this crazy new-world ideal to the rest of the organization ….

Working out with Calvin and Fitz can only help.
The two best in the league and AJ? I’ll take it.
jsl413 - January 11, 2012
yeah heard that
awesome interview….you rarely get that candid of talk from someone that high up in the NFL…..I really love Jay after this interview……we are lucky to have this guy

Getting practice with the right people
He couldn’t have chose 2 better people to practice with. He needs to get in Calvins ear and tell him when his contracts up next season to come play in Cincy. Don’t we need a Johnson another Johnson on the team ;-)

Calvin to the Bengals
a man can dream
ticalcaldwell - January 11, 2012
Fix it Gruden
we want to see the bengals scoring 30 points a game all season long.
with the D that should be enough every time
Bengalsfan024 - January 11, 2012
Who ever predicted Gruden would be our head coach in a couple of years might be on to something
AMAS85 - January 11, 2012
It's Mike Browns fault
I just thought I would say it before someone else did.
Yarin - January 11, 2012
the exec of the year has no faults
where have you been lol…
But what gruden says of AJ could be applied to any rookie WR after their rookie year
(even if they made the probowl)
Bengalsfan024 - January 11, 2012
just saw this off of the ESPNs rumor wire
In Reedy’s view, there are three particular impending free agents that stand out as possible additions: Braylon Edwards, Robert Meachem and Brandon Lloyd.
But they also stated that Simpson still could be the number two next year, there is some uncertainty.
AMAS85 - January 11, 2012
Edwards? eh not in favor of that
Lloyd has interest to go to NE and rejoin Josh McDaniels but not mention of the interest being reciprocated.
Oregonbengalsfan - January 11, 2012
Lloyd to NE might easily happen. Ocho hasn’t had a great time adjusting to their system and Branch is not that good either.
OhWell - January 11, 2012
Meachem and Lloyd would both be very good additions
OhWell - January 11, 2012
i think out of the three. I would take Lloyd
just because he proved he can be productive in many different offenses
AMAS85 - January 11, 2012
let's not forget Vincent Jackson
I believe he had a 1 yr deal endin this year

Deep WR pool in FA.
They can upgrade Smokey Rome should they want too. If Gruden says this about Green, will even start about Jerome? That would make for some compelling criticism likely to hurt his feelings.
BENGALS69 - January 11, 2012
Rome might be best #2 in free agency
The guy had over 50 catches and he’s probably more athletic than Green. We need to re sign him ASAP, to me he kinda is our top priority. Green need to take him with him to work out with Fitzgerald and Mega Tron. Were pretty much set at Wr actually if u think bout it. We have Green, Rome, Shipley, Hawkins, Whalen and Gresham. Shipley, Hawkins, and Whalen are 3of smartest Wr in NFL. Green, Rome, Gresham can go up and and get it better than anybody. The missing key to that puzzle is another tight end. Why spend 7mil on a Wr when u can upgrade the line and Dalton a have more time to spread ball around?
pray4gm11 - January 11, 2012 via mobile
Donald lee, cochart, and don't forget we put Bo Scaife on IR
TruWhoDey - January 11, 2012 via iPhone app
athleticism isnt the only trait a WR needs to have though
i dont think he is the best #2 in free agency
BeWarned - January 11, 2012
i like Simpson as well, but I have faith in our coaches
that they will make the right move for the team. I really do think Jerome will be back next year and I think his best offer will come from us in a 1yr deal with a 2nd year option. This will be the best case scenario for both parties because it will give a chance to Rome to get paid like a starter and earn a bigger contract extension. Also, it keeps the continuity between WRs and Dalton.
But if we can get Lloyd, I would have to think twice.
AMAS85 - January 12, 2012
Why pay Lloyd 6-7mil?
You can get Rome for very cheap unless some team gives him long term deal. Be real outside of Blackmon, nobody in draft or free agency as of now a be better than Simpson. The man is probably the most athletic player in NFL. He basically was in his rookie year with a rookie qb and coordinator.
If we fix the o-line and running back issue that a go a long way towards making it easier for our passing game to open up. It might be time to get rid of the Alexander’s and go in different direction. The o-line has been mishandled for years now and running game ain’t been explosive in ages.
pray4gm11 - January 12, 2012 via mobile
Edwards? No
But the other 2 would be great. Lloyd was the only bright spot outside of Jackson in STL.
steve henderson - January 11, 2012 via mobile
he would actually complament Green very well and both have great hands
I really like Lloyd, he is like the Kyle Orton of WRs lol
AMAS85 - January 11, 2012
so he sucks and has weird facial hair?
TruWhoDey - January 11, 2012 via iPhone app
No Edwards please
Dont need cement hands trying to catch balls on this team
Toasted_Orange_Monster - January 11, 2012 via mobile
Ochocinco back for #2?? lol
Touhue Cha - January 11, 2012
um NOOOO!!!!
but, I’d be happy with Dwayne Bowe
joeb69 - January 11, 2012
Why do people keep bringing up Bowe?
Him and Jamaal Charles are all the Chiefs have on offense. There’s no chance in hell they let him go.
indesignkat - January 11, 2012
If they don't franchise him, what choice do they have in the matter? Word on the street is they franchise Carr.
Grizzlyfox - January 11, 2012
+1
joeb69 - January 11, 2012
Besides quarterback, the WR position is the hardest position to come in and play the way AJ did.
Green could be special if the Bengals give him a legit #2 receiver. There will be a few WR worth looking at in FA but Mike Brown might choose to draft one because of the FA bust of Coles and Antonio Bryant.
If Michael Floyd is there at 17 the Bengals would be foolish to pass him up. Floyd is 6’3 225 and is the best blocker at his position. Not to mention this kid broke every record at possible at Notre Dame.
The Bengals have to get a running mate for Green and Gresham.
lightskin350 - January 11, 2012
we have much greater needs than a wr
There’s no way we should be spending our 17th pick on Floyd.
orange. - January 11, 2012
agreed
First off, he will be there at 17 and secondly he only foolishness about that situation would be picking him…@17,21 or even in the second-muuuuch bigger needs
TruWhoDey - January 11, 2012 via iPhone app
Gruden
Wonder how he feels the OL played and how it works with the OL coach being the assistant head coach.
That’s the only question that needs answering because that’s a roadblock going forward.
wiseking - January 11, 2012 via mobile
Very wise
keithp - January 11, 2012
Promote either Zimmer or Gruden to assistant head coach.
DTFCPDX - January 11, 2012
Gruden is a Championship caliber coach!!!
Were a couple pieces away from being special.
pray4gm11 - January 11, 2012 via mobile
Reports are Gruden signed a 3 year extension
Just reports not confirmed I guess
