According to WKMG Local 6 in Orlando, Florida, the Cincinnati Bengals have signed offensive coordinator Jay Gruden to a three-year, $3.6 million extension to keep him in Cincinnati. Gruden has been rumored to have been contacted by various teams, including the Jacksonville Jaguars, about a head coaching position after just one year as the Bengals' offensive coordinator, but recently denied being contacted by any teams and announced that he would be staying in Cincinnati.
Local 6 Sports Director David Pingalore has learned that Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden signed a three year extension with the Bengals to remain in that position.
Pingalore's NFL sources confirm the deal is worth 3.6 million dollars.
The extension doubles the salary Gruden made in his first year with the Bengals.
There is no coverage of this extension from any Cincinnati-based news outlets, and the team has yet to officially confirm the report, so it's something that we will be keeping an eye on moving forward, but if this is correct, it would seem that the Bengals have locked up their offensive coordinator for three more seasons.

Definitely good news
if its true
Helmsy - January 11, 2012
I agree but I'm not yet that excited...
Brat was terrible at the end. We could call the play before it happened almost every time. But at the same time, the statistical results aren’t too impressive.
2011:
208.8 passing yards per game
111.1 rushing yards per game
319.9 total (ranked 20th)
2010:
235.4 passing yards per game
95.1 rushing yards per game
330.6 total (ranked 20th)
Is Jay Gruden really that much better? Or is Andy Dalton just not as bone-headed as CP9?
bengaljohnboy - January 12, 2012
"Is Jay Gruden really that much better? Or is Andy Dalton just not as bone-headed as CP9?"
I have asked myself the same question over and over this season……I just cant tell if we are that much better now…or if Carson and Brat were just that bad……..lol
ticalcaldwell - January 12, 2012
I think we need to give it another year or two before those questions can be answered.
I think we will like the results. Just my opinion.
Ben-GAL - January 12, 2012
Absolutely no offseason
This year should be better with an offseason to work together.
Oregonbengalsfan - January 12, 2012
+1
DiddyGotGrillz - January 12, 2012
Heck with stats......
Put it this way , if you look this year they rushed more than they did last year .
They were more 50/50 or so .
Last year they were pass happy w/85,81 and 11…..
If it wasnt there cp9 would force the issue and thus they were horrible for the talent
They had. On paper it looked like super bowl when on the field it was toilet bowl…
with a rookie QB,WR,new OC and no OTA’s to put up the same kinda stats that a couple of former pro bowl all world WR’s and a former pro bowl Judge machine QB put up says a lot about how good this new group is and how bad the last was,Rookies-Pros?
Man Dalton,Gruden,Green blows them outta the water.
Craig Da Dread - January 12, 2012
makes sense
if the rams and jags were really interested I’m sure he didn’t turn down interviews out of the goodness of his heart.
Props to the front office if it’s true. Maybe a signal that the good decisions of 2011 are continuing…?
BeerRun - January 11, 2012
and
wouldn’t it be for a total of 4 years, signed originally for 2, worked 1 and signed a 3 year extension for a total of 4 years under contract, if it’s true.
joeb69 - January 11, 2012
can't find the original contract length anywhere online
do you have a reference? Maybe Joe Reedy will enlighten us…

Mike Brown sucks!
/i want this saying to die.
Grizzlyfox - January 11, 2012
well
he’s definately sucking less nowadays…;)

Keep it up mike. Lets go spend some cash and draft some studs.

Mike Brown did suck
and if he returns to his old ways, will suck again. However, and I think this is your larger point (and I’m just typing it out for the inopportune reader), he has changed his ways to some degree. For that degree that he has changed, I commend him.
supergrover - January 12, 2012
Pretty Sure Mike Brown is not making these decisions
Diesel2405 - January 12, 2012
But- he is allowing them to happen. Has to say something.
Ben-GAL - January 12, 2012
Exactly
Everyone wants to continue saying that it’s not Mike Brown. Well Mike Brown could kibosh ANY ONE of these moves that seem to be good moves for the team. HE is still the FINAL say in these maters.
Oregonbengalsfan - January 12, 2012
Love it
biggie22 - January 11, 2012
Love it too.
But 1.2 Mill/yr seems like not much for and NFL OC. I live in Ky and follow UK sports too. Our football team is one of the worse in the SEC and sucks pretty bad. However we have coordinaters making in the $2mill/yr range. Just suprised me that an NFL OC would make less………….
redrifle14 - January 11, 2012
Where u get that info fron?
2mil for coordinators on team that barely go to bowls is steep. Hell Butch Jones max probably around 2.5 and he head coach.
pray4gm11 - January 12, 2012 via mobile
Our last HC, Rich Brooks
Had his DC at the time (Mike Archer) and his OC (now current HC Joker Phillips) each make 1.7Mil/yr base plus up to $800,000 in bonuses.
redrifle14 - January 12, 2012
And yet we still sucked.
redrifle14 - January 12, 2012
"sucked"
and “weren’t as awesome as LSU, Florida, Bama, Arkansas and the other pillars of doom that are the SEC” are two different things
blackcattitude - January 12, 2012
Good for Mike Brown
If I’m going to criticize him when I disagree, I have to praise him when he makes a good move. It’s only fair.
Incidentally, has anyone heard about Lippincott’s replacement? I read that we were getting some young exec from William & Mary, but I haven’t heard anything since then.
Big Sky Bengal - January 11, 2012
Ah, the football pros board post
from (allegedly) Dave Lapham. Yeah, I saw that too. Took a spin around the W&M web site and their football director of ops is a young guy named Jon Small (if I recall correctly). No idea if the post is real or if he’s the guy, but have had my eye on it. We’ll find out eventually.
BeerRun - January 11, 2012
I've been waiting for Mike to slip up so I can poke fun at his 'Exec of the Year' status
guess i’ll have to keep waiting
Jason Blanton - January 11, 2012
The headline should be
“HC/GM Marvin Lewis signs Gruden to long term deal”
Something sure as hell is not right in the FO these days. No way Brown could make so many good decisions himself. More in one year than he has made his whole entire career put together.
Times they are a changin’
Yarin - January 11, 2012
LOL
biggie22 - January 11, 2012
can't "REC" comments from phone
But u nailed it….made more good decisions in the last year than I can remember throughout his career (or at least was convinced to make decisions that worked out this year)
TruWhoDey - January 12, 2012 via iPhone app
+100
I was just going to say— I think they have Mikey locked in a basement somehwere.
emeybee - January 12, 2012
uh, that's the point behind what we have been saying
I know you aren’t as frequent a poster as have been in the past, but the gist has been:
mike brown can’t make good football decisions
For the longest times, Mike Brown made football decisions→Mike Brown sucks at football decisions, Mike Brown sucks as an owner
sometime in the last five years or so, it became:
Mike Brown appears to have given up many football decisions → Mike Brown sucks at football decisions, but is increasingly doing the right thing as an owner
supergrover - January 12, 2012
What the heck is going on in this City???
The good news just keeps on coming.
I know this is a Bengals site but I cannot get over what both the Bengals and now the Reds have done over the last year.
Mike Brown all of a sudden is making all the right moves. The Reds who did nothing last year all of a sudden look to be ALL IN this year!! I’m still not even sure if I love the first few trades they makes, but I do love them going after pitching and being aggressive this offseason. Please Please Please let this trend continue through the draft and free agency!!!

Marge Schott was a terrible owner.
supergrover - January 12, 2012
What was wrong with Marge?
Bigcatdaddy - January 12, 2012 via Android app
no Marge was a terrible person
she was all in every year as an owner, which made her great in that role
joeb69 - January 12, 2012
That's what I was thinking
I don’t care what an owner does in their personal life it’s the team I care about. Marge tried to win it every year.
Bigcatdaddy - January 12, 2012 via Android app
Could it be???
We get to see the Reds win a World Series and the Bengals win a Super Bowl all within the span of a few years? I must be dreaming.
Ben-GAL - January 12, 2012
That would be indescribably awesome!
Reds WS / Bengals SB I don’t know if my heart could take it, but I’d like to find out ;-)

Gruden
Apparently not only has a knack for developing respect among players very quickly, but fans as well. I love when someone sticks to their guns, and this is the type of loyalty Mike Brown drools over…clearly Gruden sees tremendous potential with all the young talent on our squad, recognizes the foundation our roster is built on has a high ceiling and wants to be the man to lead them there. Also shows that he’s bought into Marvin’s vision of this team and the two are on the same page (making that a total of 3,including Zimmer). Which is huge IMO bc I honestly don’t believe that Marv and Brat ever saw eye to eye….now let’s cross our fingers and hope that Zimmer stays on board, hell we might as well give him a pay bump and another extension as well I thats what it takes.
TruWhoDey - January 12, 2012 via iPhone app
How much do you think this was a result of the rumors regarding St. Louis and Jacksonville
and how much do you think it had to do with the success on the field and the recent interviews where he was very upfront, honest and candid about the players and his own grade?
WOOD98 - January 12, 2012
I think more about continuity for the offense.
DTFCPDX - January 12, 2012
hell yes!
Don’t know about y’all but this is one of the most important offseason moves checked off the list. Slash benson and go after Michael Bush!
Gold Star Chili Cheese Fries - January 12, 2012 via mobile
other coordinator question
If we lose Zimmer, who do you think will replace him? Jack del Rio? Just a thought since he’s good friends with Marvin as are the Grudens…
Gold Star Chili Cheese Fries - January 12, 2012 via mobile
couple of things we learn from this
gruden is now paid like some of the lowest paid head coaches of the nfl
http://www.coacheshotseat.com/SalariesNFLCoaches.htm
gruden is now one of the higher paid assistants in the nfl
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/2011-03-16-coaches-salaries_N.htm
palewook - January 12, 2012
Nice links.
I think the HC list is outdated, but the point still stands. He’s not going anywhere unless the head coaching gig is for a great team. He wouldn’t get much of a salary bump for being a first-year HC.
Pardon_My_French - January 12, 2012
it is
looks to be 2-3 year old data on the headcoach link, but the only recent 2011 ones listed top 10 guys and the structure hadn’t changed much.

Fantastic Move!
Yet another GREAT move by the Bengals front office. I’m telling ya – this franchise is turning the corner (But haters are always gonna hate.)
WHO DEY!
DiddyGotGrillz - January 12, 2012
Thats what haters do
Since Marvin arrived we’ve turned the corner it seems. Been in the playoff hunt almost every year but last year when on paper we probably had best team since Marvin been here. People always say his cheap but that’s not true either his cheap on way he runs organization but not on players. We’ve drafted pretty darn good and spent tons of money on free agents who all just didn’t pan out because we for whatever reason. Of top of my head I can only say Mike made five really bad front office moves that was his fault. #1 not re signing steinbach. #2 not re signing levi Jones #3 drafting Perry over Jackson #4 signing Dhani Jones #5 signing A. Bryant A lot of great gms have made way worse decisions over the past years.
pray4gm11 - January 12, 2012 via mobile
Jones wasn't bad
And Levi was done. He only started 2 full seasons for us and only 8 games for the skins in 09. I don’t even know if he’s still in the league, but not resigning him was a good move IMO.
Bigcatdaddy - January 12, 2012 via Android app
I liked Jones, he was a decent leader on a team full of cry babies.
Ben-GAL - January 12, 2012
no wonder why he decided to decline all HC coaching opportunties, money speaks volumes
