On Tuesday the Miami Dolphins reduced their head coaching search to three prospects in Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy and intern head coach Todd Bowles. The name you notice missing is Cincinnati's defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, who according to the Miami Herald was "too blunt and honest for the Dolphins' liking."
In a combined report by Barry Jackson and Armando Salguero, the article reads:
The Dolphins liked Zimmer’s rèsumè, and he and general manager Jeff Ireland have a good relationship. But one source said he might have been too blunt and honest for the Dolphins’ liking. Zimmer can be outspoken at times, including calling former Falcons coach Bobby Petrino a "gutless b--tard" for leaving the job without telling any of his assistants.

Apparently the Dolphins brass decided homework was an unnecessary aspect for researching one's coaching prospects -- perhaps that's why they're looking for their seventh head coach since 2005 (including two intern head coaches due to mid-season firings). And apparently plain-spoken honesty isn't something Miami's brass cares for.
If that's the case then we're happy Zimmer isn't being considered -- we actually like and deeply respect him. We'd hate for him to go to a team that would end up firing him within three seasons anyway.
Zimmer is still a candidate for the job in Tampa Bay.

So the reason we love him
is the reason they didn’t want him. Good.

Helmsy - January 17, 2012
yes!
Now if we could just light a similar fire under our Head Coach!!!
Law1951 - January 17, 2012
I love how the Dolphins make that sound so terrible?
Perhaps that would help explain their recent W-L record.
The Van Buren Boys - January 17, 2012
Too honest
Is a character flaw.
Sign of our times.
Bengals NFL Champs - January 18, 2012 via mobile
I agree, diplomacy is necessary at the top level.......
kind of glad he seems to lack that gene, will most likely keep him here a little longer. Probably a trait best served for a D coordinator.
The Van Buren Boys - January 18, 2012
Keep being yourself Zim
Thats why we love you.
Jordan G - January 17, 2012
Hopefully TB thinks the same thing....
would be nice to have some consistency next year.
The Van Buren Boys - January 17, 2012
what does that say about the Dolphins...
we want a slimy chicksh___ for our next head coach….
ticalcaldwell - January 17, 2012
In the long run I don't think it'll work out that bad for Zim to come back....
the Dolphins aren’t going anywhere right now. Zim may still get his head coaching opportunity by staying with us. I think he’s an “AFC North” kind of guy…..
The Van Buren Boys - January 17, 2012
Ha!
I could see Zim in his interview.
Ireland: how do you plan to turn around the organization
Zim: I’d blow the whole f’n thing up because your organization sucks right now
Ireland: That’s not a nice thing to say Zim
Zim: quit bitching Ireland and give me 50.
n8dogg - January 17, 2012
lol
ticalcaldwell - January 17, 2012
That's right. Cuz that's exactly what happen. Haha.
njbengalstat - January 17, 2012
+100000 lol
That’s what I love about him.
Guess they want a “yes” man, and Zimmer is not it.
D-Day77 - January 17, 2012 via iPhone app
For sure.
The word “filter” doesn’t apply with Zim.
n8dogg - January 17, 2012
I Bet Zimmer Goes To Green Bay
Zimmer Has the Guys in Green Bay, If Green Bay passes on on Zimmer, then Green Bay is the Ass of the League!
Chili Dog - January 17, 2012
chili
once again…what in h____ are you talking about?
ticalcaldwell - January 17, 2012
Maybe he meant TAMPA Bay?
Helluva mixup there.
emeybee - January 17, 2012
good guess! i’ll be willing to settle for that explanation.
OhWell - January 17, 2012

OhWell - January 17, 2012

GB is last with yards given in the whole NFL.
412 A GAME. This is my talk!
Chili Dog - January 17, 2012
So Zimmer should be DC in GB and not HC?
OhWell - January 17, 2012
this is my talk
Zimm would not leave the Bengals for another coordinator position
ticalcaldwell - January 17, 2012
Yes
Chili Dog - January 17, 2012
Your talk is nuts.
emeybee - January 17, 2012
THIS
Oregonbengalsfan - January 17, 2012
412 a game is nuts
Zimmer can make a difference in Green Bay
Chili Dog - January 17, 2012
I’ll humor you. Zimmer is under contract through the end of the 2012 season (if I am not wrong). Why would the Bengals let him break his contract and walk away to be a DC elsewhere? (assuming that he secretly wanted to be in GB).
If we’re just making general statements about who would improve which team, then here goes: Arian Foster would improve our rushing offense! We’d be crazy to not want him!
OhWell - January 17, 2012
Green Bay gives up a lot of ground
Cheak it out, Zimmer is the guy who can make Green Bay the Top Dog
Chili Dog - January 17, 2012
Yeah!!! Zimmer can make Green Bay the Top Dog!!
OhWell - January 17, 2012
Cheak it!
emeybee - January 17, 2012

You think maybe Chili lost money on the Packers last week???
Law1951 - January 17, 2012
Marvin GM and Zimmer HC
Would be a winning combo for us. Yeah, I know it won’t happen.
BonnieBengal - January 17, 2012
I keep reading this “Marvin for GM! Zimmer for HC!” talk over and over again from fans and to be honest, I don’t get why people think that Marvin would want to be GM (even if it was offered to him).
OhWell - January 17, 2012
Agreed, there has not been one mention from Marvin ever that he wants to give up coaching
The talk is beyond annoying.
Mexal - January 17, 2012
Yeah, its more wishful thinking than anything else. Its probably the only way to keep both Marvin (who most people want to keep for his relationship to MB and his recent ability to somewhat get his way) and Zimmer.
OhWell - January 17, 2012
Has it ever happened?
A head coach promoted to GM and a coordinator filling the spot?
Cincinnati222 - January 17, 2012 via mobile
Ha Ha Annoying?!
Too bad for you. It does have merit. Marvin is a good personnel guy and a bad sideline coach. Put Marvin up in the office and give Zimmer the HC job. It’s a promotion for both.
BonnieBengal - January 17, 2012
I agree
keithp - January 17, 2012
read my tag line
been saying it for quite a while

Green Bay Needs Zimmer
Say Other
Chili Dog - January 17, 2012
This is a team that chose...
… Jeff Ireland over Jeff Fisher.
Anyone surprised?
Skyhook - January 17, 2012
This is a Bengal Blog About A Topic On The Table
Does or not Green Bay Need a Guy like Zimmer?
Chili Dog - January 17, 2012
No, they don't. They need a guy like you.
Chili Dog as GB Coordinator!!
emeybee - January 17, 2012
Tampa and Miami are on the table and all dismiss other options
Whats Up!?
Chili Dog - January 17, 2012
Really?
The difference is that he is being considered for a HC role in TB and not a DC!!!
OhWell - January 17, 2012
hoping we get to keep zimmer
happy as can be with zimmer as our d-coord
palewook - January 17, 2012
I love this guy
indesignkat - January 17, 2012
Admit One Fact,
Green Bay gave up 412 yards per game. Last in the NFL, Agree? Expand upon a Zimmer hire for Green Bay? Is there a downside for Green Bay?
Chili Dog - January 17, 2012
why the hell would Zimmer leave here for Green Bay?
keithp - January 17, 2012
Chili dog. Can u do a fanpost
njbengalstat - January 17, 2012
+1
I’m always up for a good comedy
biggie22 - January 17, 2012
Politically correct football
The Dolphins are looking for the guy that comes on message boards, and whines about spell check!
keithp - January 17, 2012
Give the Guy a Raise
Give the guy big money to stay as DC of Cincy….. Who knows, when Marvin leaves, he could be the next HC in Cincinnati. I wouldn’t mind that a bit.
Goble - January 17, 2012
Gotta Keep Him
The Bengals defense sucked for years until Zimmer came along. We HAVE to keep this guy a while. Give him what he wants.
Goble - January 17, 2012
Reedy got a question on twitter tonight
Asking if zim and gruden were bothmstill here and Marivin didn’t sign an extension would they get the HC job. He said that one of those two would get it. So if Zim stays he’s got a good shot.
Helmsy - January 18, 2012
Maybe the 'Phins are Right
I’ve always maintained that there has to be a reason why Zim hasn’t had a HC offer after 14 years of coaching. While I absolutely agree that he is a very, very good DC, maybe the ‘phins are right that he’s too blunt and assertive to be a good HC. HC is a different animal that takes different skills. While a coordinator is expected to “kick ass” at times, the HC is more politician than coach. Look at LeBeau and how he failed as a HC. I could be wrong about this, but I believe it would be a mistake to make Zimmer the HC of the Bengals and that he’s most valuable right where he is.
Who dey in LA - January 17, 2012
Absoutely agree with you Who dey in LA!!
Law1951 - January 17, 2012
Have you been "channeling " me LA?
I was just getting ready to scroll down and post almost exactly the same thing when I caught your comments. Eerily in almost the same words that you used. We must be brothers from a different mother.
JUNGLEJOHN - January 18, 2012
Hahahahaha
Funniest thing I’ve ever heard!! I have a buddy that is a Dolphins fan and I’m going to laugh in his face.
whodeycommish14 - January 17, 2012 via mobile
This just shows
how much the Dolphins view their organization as pure entertainment. It’s south beach, so what do you expect? They’d rather have their coach roll out the red carpet and bring red roses to an interview.
whodeycommish14 - January 17, 2012 via mobile
Maybe they need a parrot head coach ;-)
Wasted away again in Dolphinville
Bigcatdaddy - January 17, 2012 via Android app
The whole Dez Bryant's mother thing
That was Ireland right?
keithp - January 17, 2012
Yes
whodeycommish14 - January 17, 2012 via mobile
This is for the best in Zim's interest.
The PHish are in a highly competitive division, they have no QB, no draft pick high enough to land a stud QB, and have a crappy GM. 5 yrs from now he will be happy he didnt get that crap job.
redrifle14 - January 17, 2012
lemme make sure my scorecard is set
Fisher in STL and Spagnulo is on the line with Caldwell (now) and Hue. Zim is too blunt for South Beach and still in the Queen City and if Z is blunt do you think Del Rio is up for DC talk in that franchise ever?
Gruden is probably buying in Cincinnati and the entire coaching staf should have minimal changes going into 2012.
I still feel I have missed something.
david in upstate SC - January 17, 2012
Zim is still in the running for the TB job
Helmsy - January 18, 2012
And no clue whether Indy expresses interest yet
Oregonbengalsfan - January 18, 2012
i think chili has a point
coordinators leave for coordinator spots often…
Trevor 85 - January 18, 2012
after they have been fired
keithp - January 18, 2012
Zimmer is headed to Green Bay
If he doesn’t go there, I expect him to go to New England, St. Louis, Indianapolis, New York or maybe even the Ravens.
DALTON’S ARM STRENGTH SUCKS!!! The Bengals would be smart to trade Zimmer to NE for Ryan Mallett. Then we would actually have a QB who could throw the ball 70 yards down field.
WOOD98 - January 18, 2012
Hmmmm???? No
njbengalstat - January 18, 2012
Is that you Mike Brown?
The Van Buren Boys - January 18, 2012
Do u think he comes on here under different names? Cuz some post I read I think that it might be him
And he should come on here and listen to the people that make him money
njbengalstat - January 18, 2012
He very well might........but only to defend himself.
The Mallett comment above made me think of that. I also could have sworn I have heard Cedric Benson creeping around here on some posts too……..
The Van Buren Boys - January 18, 2012
Lol. That's what I'm talk in about
njbengalstat - January 18, 2012
Its MB aka ChiliDog here....
WOOD98 - January 19, 2012
I said this very thing...
Back in the preseason. People said I was crazy. GM’s are power hungry people who want “yes” men around them. Zimmer is in your face, tell it like it is guy. That is why he has never got a shot and may never ,unless he changes— I hope he never does.
Yarin - January 18, 2012
In that pic...
Zimm kinda looks like Coach Beaulieu from The Waterboy…“The only thang better than one crawfish dinner…is TWO crawfish dinners”. Ahh…Jerry Reed…another one of my heroes.
morrison360 - January 18, 2012
+1 snowman ;-)
Is he still alive?
Bigcatdaddy - January 18, 2012 via Android app
Nah
I think he passed away in 2008. Sure wish I could play guitar like him.
morrison360 - January 18, 2012
Zimme is too old school for the new school NFL players.
I sincerely doubt Lombardi would have had the same success he had if he coached now. Zimmer’s demeanor reminds me a lot of Lombardi.
JUNGLEJOHN - January 18, 2012
Thats why i value your opinion!
Gramps,with the wisdom,i prefer the ol’school demeanor
