CINCINNATI - FILE: Cedric Benson #32 of the Cincinnati Bengals runs with the ball during the NFL game against the San Diego Chargers at Paul Brown Stadium on December 26, 2010 in Cincinnati, Ohio. According to reports on July 31, 2011 the Bengals will re-sign Benson to a one year deal. (Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images)
The Bengals' season is over. Even though the playoffs are still in full swing and free agency has yet to begin, we can of course form a wish list of sorts of players that we would like to have in stripes in 2012, but before we start deciding who we would like to bring to Cincinnati, let's take a look at everybody that was already wearing stripes in 2011.
Thanks to The Cincinnati Enquirer's Joe Reedy, we have an unofficial list of the Bengals free agents and thanks to ProFootballFocus.com, we have those players' grades.
So let's get to it.

Exclusive Rights Free Agents:
RB Cedric Peerman -- Overall Rating: 0.4, Special Teams Rating: 3.9
- Peerman didn't play very much in 2011. He only carried the ball three times in 2011 but his special teams play was very good.
LB Vincent Rey -- Overall Rating :0.0, Special Teams Rating: 1.0
- Like Peerman, Rey barely played in 2011. He took some snaps on special teams, though.
Restricted Free Agents:
LS Clark Harris -- Overall Rating: 0.0
- Harris came to Cincinnati to replace Brad St. Louis as the team's long snapper. He's done a good job.
DT Nick Hayden -- Overall Rating: 0.6
- Hayden played 33 snaps in Weeks 14 and 15. He was better against the run than at rushing the passer in that short period of time and made two stops.
FB Chris Pressley -- Overall Rating: 3.7
- Pressley played in 15 of the team's regular season games and in their wildcard game. He received a grade of 1.0 for pass blocking and a grade of 0.7 for run blocking. He also received a rating of 1.0 for his receiving ability. When it comes to fullbacks, he is rated as the eighth best in the league by PFF.
LB Dan Skuta -- Overall Rating: 2.5, Special Teams: 1.0
- Skuta played in 13 of the team's 16 regular season games and in the wildcard game. He started in Week 6, 8 and 9 as Rey Maualuga's replacement when the starting middle linebacker was injured. According to PFF, Skuta excelled in pass rushing and run defense but struggled in pass coverage.
Unrestricted Free Agents:
RB Cedric Benson -- Overall Rating: 3.6
- Benson struggled in 2011. While the offensive line wasn't spectacular, Benson struggled to make plays on his own. He was largely unable to break tackles, he was terrible when it came to catching passes out of the backfield and he was worst at picking up third- or fourth-and-short yardage. Furthermore is attitude seemed to be a detriment to the team. Most expect the Bengals not to re-sign Benson even though he had more than 1,000 yards for the third season in a row in 2011.
WR Andre Caldwell -- Overall Rating: -11.4
- Caldwell was expected to step up after Jordan Shipley went on IR early in the season. Unfortunately, he was terrible inconsistent and was unable to help the offense much at all. He only received a positive grade in three games in 2011 and never a grade over 0.7.
OT Anthony Collins -- Overall Rating: 4.3
- Collins only played in five games this season and only twice as the team's starting right tackle. According to PFF, he excelled in pass protection but was not quite as good in run blocking. Many want Collins to be re-signed in 2011.
DE Jonathan Fanene -- Overall Rating: 0.5
- Fanene had 6.5 sacks in 2011 as one of the team's rotating defensive linemen. According to PFF, though, he was actually much better at run defense. He earned a run defense score of 4.6 and a pass rush score of -2.0. He was an important part of the Bengals defensive line, which was the strength of the team through most of the season.
CB Kelly Jennings -- Overall Rating: -5.2
- Jennings was originally signed to play the nickel position but he struggled. Many hoped Adam Jones would take his spot when he was able to, but after Leon Hall's season-ending injury, he was forced into a much larger role than many felt comfortable with him in. He had a -6.6 rating in pass coverage.
LB Brandon Johnson -- Overall Rating: 0.5
- Johnson didn't start any games in 2011 but had a fairly large role in some games as a backup and in pass coverage situations. According to PFF he was better against the run, earning a rush defense score of 2.9, and earned a pass coverage score of -2.8.
CB Adam Jones -- Overall Rating: -2.4
- Jones started in eight of the Bengals games in 2011, opposite of Nate Clements, taking over for Hall after his season-ending injury. Unfortunately, he didn't play nearly as well as Hall could have. PFF game him a pass coverage score of 0.3 and a run defense score of -1.7.
LB Manny Lawson -- Overall Rating: 10.6
- With Maualuga's move to middle linebacker and Keith Rivers' injury, the Bengals signed Lawson and Thomas Howard. Lawson earned a pass defense score of -0.6 but was graded highly against the run with a score of 8.1.
TE Donald Lee -- Overall Rating: -2.9
- The Bengals brought Lee to Cincinnati after Bo Scaife went on IR in the preseason. He had a score of 2.6 as a receiver but struggled in blocking when he was in with a score of -3.7.
OG Nate Livings -- Overall Rating: -13.
- Livings struggled all season, especially in run blocking. He earned a pass blocking grade of 0.4 but his pass blocking was -9.1. The Bengals entire offense struggled due to the poor play of the guards, especially later in the season.
OG Mike McGlynn -- Overall Rating: -9.0
- McGlynn came in during the third and fourth game of the season to start in Clint Boling's place and then came back into the starting lineup when Bobbie Williams was place on IR. He struggled almost equally in run and pass blocking earning a score of -3.8 in pass blocking and a score of -4.1 in run blocking.
S Reggie Nelson -- Overall Rating: -3.1
- Nelson had his moments in 2011. He's a hard hitter and he can be good against the pass at times. Unfortunately, when he hit hard, he was flagged, but that didn't stop him. According to PFF, his run defense grade was -3.8 and his pass defense grade was 1.5.
K Mike Nugent -- Overall Score: 27.0
- Nugent was automatic through the majority of the season. There was a small stretch after the middle of the season where he missed a few field goals, but he bounced back. Nugent has been a good addition to the Bengals.
OT Dennis Roland -- Overall Score: -1.2
- Roland played at times in every game of the season except for one. He was graded better as a pass protector than a run blocker with a pass blocking score of 1.4 and a run blocking score of -2.7.
DE Frostee Rucker -- Overall Score: 4.0
- Rucker was another important part of the team's defensive line. He graded highly in run defense, with a score of 9.5, but had a pass rush score of -7.1.
TE Bo Scaife -- Overall Score: 0.0
- Scaife was placed on IR before the season began. He didn't accumulate any stats.
WR Jerome Simpson -- Overall Score: -12.2
- Simpson is capable of flipping in the air over a defender in one game and then disappearing in the next. He's just as physically gifted as A.J. Green, but unlike Green, he seemed incapable of showing up when the team needed him. He had a grade of -5.7 when it came to receiving and -4.1 in run blocking.
DT Pat Sims -- Overall Score: -4.1
- Sims was placed on IR after the team's Week 12 game against the Browns. His presence on the line, especially when it came to stopping the run was missed. He had a run defense grade of 0.1 and a pass rush grade of -4.5.
G Bobbie Williams -- Overall Score: 1.9
- Williams was sorely missed during his four-game suspension in the beginning of the season and after he went on IR in Week 14. He had a pass protection grade of 0.9 and a run blocking grade of 1.8. His veteran leadership on and off the field was sorely missed as well.
So, now that you've seen all the Bengals free agents and their PFF grades, which ones would you like to see re-signed by the Bengals for the 2012 season and beyond?
Like to c Harris, skuta,Collins fanene,Lawson ,Nelson. Ted nugent back
Maybe sims Rucker and Rolland Since most of them r backups or part of a rotation I wouldn’t lose too much sleep over it. That’s why I love FA and the draft But i hate when u like one guy, then the bengals release him and I hope to think that the team knows more then me about injures etc. But it still sux cuz u cheer for them all year
njbengalstat - January 18, 2012
Fanene, Nelson, Collins, and maybe Simpson
I think Fanene will want to test the market though.
whodeycommish14 - January 18, 2012 via mobile
Also....
Peerman, Skuta, Vincent Rey, Manny Lawson
whodeycommish14 - January 18, 2012 via mobile

And...
Mike Nugent with another kicker to compete for a spot, which I believe they have already done. Also, I wouldn’t mind bringing back Frostee and Pat Sims to stop the run.

Hopefully,
some of these guys will be willing to work on one year deals haha
whodeycommish14 - January 18, 2012 via mobile
Give frostee his props and bring him back
Toasted_Orange_Monster - January 18, 2012 via mobile
Couldnt agree more.
He would be a starter for almost any other team that runs a 4-3.
redrifle14 - January 18, 2012
i will take sims and fanane back
And let frostee walk. All 3 will want to get paid more than back up money, and don’t think we do that with all 3. Plus like you said, he can be a starter elsewhere.
JCompton41 - January 18, 2012 via mobile
Lawson,Skuta,Rucker,Sims,Nuge,Nelson,Rolland
Peerman,Rey,Pressley
keithp - January 18, 2012
Fannene
keithp - January 18, 2012
Im still not that impressed with Rolland.
Hopefully we can upgrade from him.
redrifle14 - January 18, 2012
Your right, should have been Collins, not Rolland
keithp - January 19, 2012
Peerman, Skuta, Nugent, Sims, Fannene, Lawson, and Simpson
Simpson only if the price is right. He’s about the most veteran reciever we have so unless the plan is to go after some free agent help elsewhere we should look into keeping him.
I love Pat Sims I’m glad to see him doing well and it’s nice to see he recieved positive praise for his run stopping ability
Manpaw - January 18, 2012
OK
I think we should bring back
For sure
Anthony Collins
Johnathan Fanene
Brandon Johnson
Reggie Nelson
Frostee Rucker
Pat Simms
Mike Nugent
Dennis Roland
Bobbie Williams
Not really sure yet
Adam Jones
Manny Lawson
Donald Lee/Bo Scaife
Everyone else we need to let walk

Not sold on Pac-man.
He can walk unless he is dirt cheap.
redrifle14 - January 18, 2012
why are you not sure on lawson?
one of our most consistent guys against the run, and adequate in pass coverage.
dqniel - January 19, 2012
could be afraid of lawson's cost
lawson might be the most expensive LB in cincy next season if we manage to resign him
palewook - January 19, 2012
way too many returners given the grades
Fact is most of these players are mediocre.
Sims and Lawson, Collins, Jennings, Nugent and Nelson. That’s all I would sign.
occams_tiger_teeth - January 19, 2012
who I want back
Collins, Nelson, Fanane, Sims, Bobbie Williams, Peerman, Skuta, Nudge. Don’t think we Collins comes back to be a backup, other than that it shouldn’t be hard to keep the rest. Pay sims and fanane between backup and starter money, pay nelson average saftey pay, the rest backups.
JCompton41 - January 18, 2012 via mobile
simpson too if not to expensive
I’d resign Jennings for depth too.
JCompton41 - January 18, 2012 via mobile
seems jennings over jones is the choice since the guilty plea
palewook - January 19, 2012
A guilty plea for disorderly conduct...
Oregonbengalsfan - January 19, 2012
i know the plea is crap
its the suspension coming from the nfl that will make it a hard case to resign jones. lets say you sign jones for a 1 year 2 million dollar deal as your #3 cb. the nfl has the ability to suspend jones during the lockout because his name is on the list of 8 players the union made the sidebar agreement on.
jones has been suspended numerous times by the nfl. his next suspension is not going to be 1 game. depending on how goodell is feeling the morning he decides, jones could be out anywhere from 4 games to a year or indefinitely.
jones already has faced 12 incidents where he was interviewed by police or convicted and then suspended by the nfl. he’s already had to agree to a goodell term of “Jones must have no more run-ins with law enforcement” to be reinstated in the nfl once before.
catch goodell in the wrong mood and jones career could be over the moment he signs with a team.
palewook - January 19, 2012
two things regarding stopping the run and run blocking...
1) No surprise A. Jones’ in the negative against the run. The thug in him can’t help but get in people’s face and talk trash, but in reality he looks tiny compared to everyone else on the field, including the receivers. That’s another area where J Joe excells. He can hang with the big boys and tackle them too. Some early round draft prospects are generously listed at 5’10. That concerns me with the size of NFL receivers. A. Jones’ talent wanted me to support him, but his continued trouble with the po po and his childish behavior in the playoffs want me to keep Jennings instead. I knocked Jennings early on and, frankly, he deserved it. But he improved and had the talent to go in the 1st round. Keep him and drop the guy who can’t escape the name Pacman!
2) I’m calling BS on Simpsons’ negative run blocking score. Granted, I was only at one game this year, but on TV when a run kicked out to his side, I saw him giving his all. He ended up in a lot of scrums this year and I think it had more to do with his effort in run blocking than talking s**t on the field. As far as I’m concerned, his willingness to run block ends the debate for me if he should stay with the team.
frickja - January 18, 2012
RE: Simpson's run blocking
I think I have to agree. His blocking was always something for which people have credited him highly.

I agree about Adams size.
Pac is a lightweight as NFL CBs go.
Bengals have 2 first round picks.
Alfonzo Dennard CB Nebraska may be there when the Bengals select.
Dennard is listed under 5’10" weights 204.
Would anyone take Dennard?
I have no idea.

I would like to know?
If we were between 40-45 million under the cap last year and with this many contracts going off the books, how much are the Bengals going to be under the cap? I know you have to factor in the contract extensions of Hall,Whitworth and Cook but if they did get to a little bit under the cap this year, It seems that they would have anywhere between 60-70 million to spend? Just wondering what the figure would be before we signed anyone?

palewook - January 19, 2012
I would love to keep all these guys but in reality it won't happen.
So this is how I see it playing out. Peerman stays, the guys good on ST. Rey leaves, to alot of Lb’s on the roster and he’s the odd man out. Harris stays, he’ll be cheap. Hayden? Pressley stays, cheap and good blocker. Skuta stays, cheap and good ST. Benson gets run out of town with Caldwell. Collins and Fanene leaves, they both want to start and get paid. Jennings stays, he’ll be cheap and we need depth. Johnson leaves, odd man out. Pacman, who really knows about him? Lawson stays, pay the man. Lee stays, depth. Livings stays, I’m afraid that since he’s Alexanders love child he’ll want him back, but hopefully for depth only. McGlynn leaves, hate that dude. Nelson stays, pay the man. Roland stays, cheap depth. Rucker stays, not as expensive as Fanene but just as effective. Simpson stays, don’t think he’ll demand much and hopefully he’s depth. Simms stays, pay the man. Williams if he doesn’t retire he’ll be cheap because I don’t see another team taking him at his age and ol’ Bobby can still get it done. Nugent stays, the kicker they brought in before the playoffs could be a deterrent for him to demand big money.
Bigcatdaddy - January 19, 2012 via Android app
Skuta, Rey, Peerman, all are very important to retaining the best ST unit in the NFL.
The other obvious players are obvious.
Cry - January 19, 2012
skuta rey peerman
nelson, simms, collins, jennings, and lawson (if afforable) ?
palewook - January 19, 2012
All of them but Livings, Roland and Benson
The preseason is loooong and dangerous. We’ll need 80 guys. No cracks in this list so no problem to bring them back for one year and no too much money. We always can fire them in August.
Only long contract to Nugent and Nelson (maybe Collins and Lawson too).
Antoniomagon - January 19, 2012
No one has love 4 Harris Remember brad st Louis a couple years ago Then I think we got rid of him the next day
Harris has done a pretty good job under pressure and he doesn’t cost much. Sign the man
njbengalstat - January 19, 2012
Resign Harris for sure....
But in my opinion especially if we draft a rookie guard we need to resign big Bobbie, he may not have alot left in the tank but what he has left is better than any guard on our roster and he would be a great mentor for any rookie lineman
bnglsfan - January 19, 2012 via mobile
one has to ask them self, "How can a player get a negative 12 grade?"
or how reggie nelson got a negative grade? I wanna know how they measure the players.
AMAS85 - January 19, 2012
seems a little off to me
AMAS85 - January 19, 2012
reggie gave up big plays
He made plays, but not all the time.
JCompton41 - January 19, 2012 via mobile
Reggie had the same stats as troy polamalu, I wonder what his rating was?
I think Reggie had to be in the top ten for FS this. He may have given up two or three big plays this year. But he also had for 4 int and one of those went for a TD. Not to mention he laid some wood.
If Troy is around -3 then I would agree with the rating but If its a positive 10 or something then i really don’t trust this rating system.
p.s.
The WDR (whodeyta rating) is still in the works.
AMAS85 - January 19, 2012
Yea. I don't get how they graded them
njbengalstat - January 19, 2012
troys tackles were stops
Reggies weren’t as much. Reggie had some busted plays where he left his zone. The point of pff is to look beyond the stats of tackles and picks. For the record I’m a big reggie nelson fan. He’s great for the scheme and with another corner or saftey he will be more free to do what he does, and not have to be the disciplined defender he’s not.
JCompton41 - January 19, 2012 via mobile
i think Troys may have had 7 more stops then Nelson.
I don’t think that is enough to justify a big descrepancy in ratings, if there is a big descrepancy. And like you said, they use Troy in a different scheme that allows him to be on the line of scrimmage more than an average safety would be. Troy also has a better complement safety in Ryan Clark. So I think they should take that in a factor. But then again im not completely sure how they got their rating.
IMO, we keep Nelson even if we have to franchise him because he is that good.
AMAS85 - January 19, 2012
i would franchise him too if need be
That’s only like 6-8 mil. And I think reggie is good, but he does have his limitations. He trys to make plays, and that will get him beat, or will make him the hero, I think that will be better when hes not faster that both corners, and the only saftey in the field
JCompton41 - January 19, 2012 via mobile
yea i think if we can Nelson a "ryan clark" type compliment
Nelson can easily be an all pro. Im not really concerned with the speed of our corners as much as I am concerned about the missed tackles or poor coverage by the SS. I think that made Nelson more vulnerable than anything else.
AMAS85 - January 19, 2012
Someone said something on Twitter the other day along the lines of...
PFF stats are great and they do a great job, but alot of people use these stats as gospel… but they aren’t.
Oregonbengalsfan - January 19, 2012
Let's cut Crocker and make him a free agent.
Animal_Like_Football - January 19, 2012
That def happening
njbengalstat - January 19, 2012
I would be totally surprised if Caldwell or Simpson is back. I agree with most people,Simpson is a athletic freak but he just isn’t a good player. He doesn’t come back to the ball,he seems like he isn’t on the same page with Dalton a lot of the times and his hands are average at best. With the drug situation hanging over his head he isn’t worth it when you can find a good replacement for him.
EPK1979 - January 19, 2012
Things that surprised me
Instead of saying who’d I’d keep/get rid of… I think I’d rather note a few things that surprised me about the grading.
1) Nelson had a negative grade – I think Nelson had a few BS calls on him during the year that hurt his PFF grade. I know they take penalties into account, but I’m not sure how they grade the dubious roughing the passer/unnecessary roughness calls. Regardless, we will take a BIG step backward if this guy isn’t in our secondary next year
2) Manny Lawson had a HUGE score. I honestly thought the guy disappeared a bit during the year… but according to PFF he was a run stuffing stud. By that alone we should bring him back
3) Fanene and Rucker weren’t good pass rushers? – I thought they were both key at different times during the year… and am surprised they rated lowly in that area. I think we need to bring one of the two of these guys back at least next year.
The rest I think is pretty obvious. Our interior OLine is bad (with the exception of Williams, who still gets it done) Our WRs not named Green had horribly inconsistent years. Anthony Collins deserves more PT and its unclear how he didn’t beat out the McGlynn or Livings for a guard spot… you know… the usual.
The Dealio - January 19, 2012
Fanene and Rucker weren’t good pass rushers? – I thought they were both key at different times during the year… and am surprised they rated lowly in that area. I think we need to bring one of the two of these guys back at least next year.
I was think about that too, but I also think their numbers were a result of a great starting rotation. I think both players a replaceable because when they did come in, they were more fresh because they only play like 10-15 snaps a game
AMAS85 - January 19, 2012
Still think Caldwell has a bad rap here
He wasn’t used on the outside, which was his strength. When they did, he shined. While he’s remembered for his few fumbles and drops, he’s had some of the biggest TD grabs in the last decade (2009—Pittsburgh and Baltimore game-winners; 2011 versus the Titans). He’s not a slot guy as the Bengals have tried to mold him into. The Bengals are notorious for failed attempts at converting a player to a position that isn’t his strength.
Is he replaceable? Of course? Could they find someone more effective right away? Probably. But the guy has made plays and I contend that he’d have had just as productive a season as a full-time starter this year as Simpson did. Take this bit from Hobson:
“In fact, once Andre Caldwell went down with a sports hernia, the Bengals played the last four games with basically all first-year full-time receivers who had no work in offensive coordinator Jay Gruden’s offense until the first day of training camp.”
In that stretch, Dalton had only four TD’s in his last six games. I think Caldwell was missed.
Anthony Cosenza - January 19, 2012
Too many interceptions when he was targeted.
And only comes up with that “clutch” catch too infrequently IMO
Oregonbengalsfan - January 19, 2012
i don't mind caldwell
but he has a low ceiling. I think they knew that drafting him because they wanted to draft someone they could put in while Jerome was developing. But I think I would prefer Whalen over Caldwell because Whalen has more upside. I think those two would be fighting for the same position on the WR depth chart.
AMAS85 - January 19, 2012
"Mold Him Into"
Question. week 11 against the Ravens, Simpson had 8 catches for 152 yards replacing Green.
Did Simpson play Greens position or did Simpson play his usual position?
And who played opposite of Simpson that day?
Is Simpson playing out of position? Is Die Cast for failure?

Oregonbengalsfan - January 19, 2012
WR just became a huge need!
It went from bad to worse. Simpson just lost his career in the NFL. The best he can do is get it dropped to a misdemeanor and pay fines. A felony comes with mandatory jail time. Regardless teams won’t touch him and it could take a year or more to settle this thing. With our needs I hope we address this in FA and not the draft. Someone tell Meachum or Colston they can ride with Nicks to Cincy. Lol

"Regardless teams won’t touch him"
Others have come back with worse charges…
Oregonbengalsfan - January 19, 2012
Your right, but not in FA while they were in the middle of it.
He probably won’t play next season. He could come back but he’s not a Burris or Vick caliber player. All I can say is good luck Jerome.
Bigcatdaddy - January 19, 2012 via Android app
their is something to consider
lets say simpson misses all of the 2012 season dealing with his legal issue and possibly 1/3 to 1/2 of the 2013 season dealing with the nfl suspension. would mike brown consider resigning simpson to a vet min contract in 2013?
i’d hate to bet against the house on that one. brown could do something resigning simpson in 12-18 months.
palewook - January 19, 2012
When it comes to Brown and his history of signing misfits who knows.
The best thing he could do depending on his chances of getting it dropped or reduced is to plea out fast. Since it’s his first offense that I’m aware of he is probably looking at 1yr. Was he in KY or OH? In KY he can be out in 7 months and 21 days that way he will be out by next season. Brown is probably the only guy that would resign an average #2 WR that had a year away from the game. IMO if the NFL would bar felons it would help deter such stupidity.
