Even though the Cincinnati Bengals are going to the playoffs, they've did it by placing third in the division. Not that it's any small feat, considering the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers finished 12-4 respectively, battling each other for the second seed and first round bye. On the bright side, there is a benefit. With the regular season coming to an end on Sunday, Cincinnati's opponents for next season are now known and the league released where those games will be played.

Star-divide

The AFC North will face the NFC East and the AFC West next season, as part of the league's rotation (this year the Bengals played the AFC South and the NFC West). The primary difference between the Bengals and the other teams in the AFC North is that while the Ravens and Steelers play teams that finished first and second respectively in the AFC East and AFC South, the Bengals will play the Miami Dolphins and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Of Cincinnati's 13 opponents next season, four are heading into the playoffs this year.

The Bengals will host the Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys, along with the much anticipated Carson Palmer return to Cincinnati with the Oakland Raiders visiting. Cincinnati's home schedule rounds out with the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins. The Bengals will play on the road against the Chiefs, Chargers, Eagles, Redskins and Jaguars.

lol

welcome back to cincy palmer, the only question that remains. will you be starting or benched by kickoff time?

I hope so

because I’ll be down at PBS and I just can’t wait to experience the energy that will be in that stadium.

I'm in Cali, and I will be going to that game if at all humanly possible
Well, Carson did say

he would never play in PBS again if he wasn’t traded…

im my ideal world

the raiders game is the first announced sold out game. with a stadium full of pissed off fans chucking palmer crap back onto the field throughout the game..

Pretty likely that it'll be

the first of the MNF Double Header Opener. The street value of that ticket will be HUGE.

You condone fans throwing stuff on the field?

Jesus, you should be a Raiders fan.

yes i do for that game =)

hell i condone the fans going onto the field and escorting palmer out of the stadium..

As a great man once said...

We’re not from Cleveland. Act like it.

are you really daft enough to think i'm serious

when i suggest a near riot and semi public lynching are acceptable forms of behavior for societal norms?

artistic license. christ. couple of people need to get off their horses this morning, drink some coffee, and go wake their significant others up.

Uhh...

I think you took this a little too seriously. Yes, I know you were joking.

Score one for the Interwebs inability to show sarcasm.

Yeah. Cleveland actually sells tickets.

Not like our fan base….did you see the boards last night? Ripping our own team…being a Bengals fan is hard enough – hate it that other Bengals fans hate their own team….I am just thrilled we are in.

A great man named Sam Wyche.......see below.
I dont normally condone it

But yesterday when the refs were doing there blow job some old boy chucked a half full beer at the back judge and almost hit him. He had a hell of an arm

sounds like a situation

where you should have bought that man another beer..

I honestly would have

But he was about 20 rows higher than me and I was in row 7. Yea he had a cannon.

hahaha
Children

Play nice. Plenty of room in the sandbox.

We got two more relatively weak divisions next year.

Add in the third place conference opponents and we should have a fairly easy schedule again.

Hopefully with a better team overall!
will depend on our fa moves

this team is close but has some holes and weaknesses. if we dont address fixing either the offense or the defense in FA, i’m going to be concerned. we don’t have enough draft picks to fix both offense and defense. so the draft can fix one side of the ball, not both.

will be the 1st litmus test in the off season for cincy. do we have a normal fa off season with brown only picking up bargain players. or does he make a couple of real moves.

He's been better in FA lately too

The doctors screwed up on Antonio Bryant, but he tried. And Palmer was given his TO gift he wanted. Plus Clements, Lawson, Howard, Pacman, etc were all good pickups.

well

clements was a bargain contract signing. and only to replace the loss of jojo while saving 8 million or so a year.

pacman got another bargain basement deal.

lawson and howard were also cheap contracts.

That is good business

Getting quality guys for a good price. The problem before was he would get the cheapest of the cheap, whether they could play or not.

I’m no Mikey fan, but he’s improving, and I think we need to start giving him a little credit. (Or at least give credit to the brain slug that’s attached to his head and controlling his mind).

got 20 years of half measures to make up for in my book

means around 2031 i’ll cut him slack, provided the bengals have an overall record better than .500 from 2011 to 2031.

Agree.

Palmer created his own nightmare.

I agree

But we are never going to fill all the holes. We get an explosive back, secondary help, and some depth on both lines and we will be a lot better team. We can do that with our draft picks.

We can address other stuff in FA.

Realistically...

…it isn’t out of the whelm of possibilities that Cincy can go 12-4 next year.

whelm?

LOL good one…

It's realm.

I’m not giving grammar smack or anything. Just thought you should know.

Adam Jones, this was his last year under contract, right?
Right, they should re-sign him.
will depend on how much he wants

much more than a vet min contract and brown will pass

His off-field baggage

will continue to make him unwanted by other franchises. That should weigh nicely in Mike’s favor.

Problems off the field, injury history, and a reputation (though untrue) as not being good anymore.

He won’t get much interest.

In all honesty...

I want him back simply to return. He’d simply be #4-5 on the CB Depth Charts.

Who are the 3 or 4 players in front of him?
Clements, Hall

and whomever they draft next year.

Clements is getting old

I’d probably start Pacman and Hall next year, assuming they’re both healthy.

i dont even know if hall is a #1 anymore

pre-injury he was borderline #1. he’s more suited for #2. we really need to draft a #1 cb. allowing hall/jones/clements to fight out 2-3-4

Agreed, but I'm not sure if we can pick up an NFL-ready starting CB in a playoff draft spot.

Jenkins might be that guy, but there are a lot of concerns surrounding him. This wouldn’t be the popular choice, but I’d almost consider trading our two first rounders to get in the 6-8 range and draft Morris Claiborne.

I think we need to address the interior of our offensive line first

then, maybe pick up a DE with the other first round pick. We thought we could pick up an adequate guard in the third last year and ended up with Boling. Livings isn’t quite cutting it and Bobby’s career is about done.

*correction: I meant DB - not DE
offensive line needs to be addressed in fa

we cant fix both sides of the ball in the draft.

DeCastro will likely be gone before we pick and Glenn doesn't excite me.

I agree that we need to pick up a good Guard, but that’s easier said than done.

I could live with Glenn with maybe our second 1st round pick

or perhaps convert one of the OT’s in the draft to OG.

Another easy schedule

Just five games against teams with winning records, Pitt x2, Baltimore x2, Giants.

It's a bit premature to label a schedule as "easy" or "difficult" at this point

By way of example, if, exactly one year ago today, a team saw the San Francisco 49ers on their schedule for 2011, they would be thinking, “That’s a definite W”.

Conversely, if, exactly one year ago today, a team saw the New York Jets on their 2011 schedule, they would be thinking, “That’s a likely Loss”.

Instead, the 49ers earned the 2nd seed in the NFC (ahead of the mighty Saints, even) exactly one season after winning 5 games. On the other hand, the NY Jets meekly bowed out of playoff contention with an 8-8 record (after reaching the AFC Championship 2 consecutive seasons).

Heck, if, exactly one year ago today, a team saw our beloved Cincinnati Bengals on their 2011 schedule, they would’ve definitely thought, “That’s an easy win!!”.

Bottom line, way too early to label a schedule as “easy” or difficult" at any point. Moreover, the Schedule argument really doesn’t matter because Cincinnati plays Baltimore and Pittsburgh twice a year, EVERY SINGLE YEAR. They could play DII college programs the remaining 12 regular season games, and still would have faced a tough schedule with having to play Balt. and Pitts twice each (Now the Bengals should start winning those games, instead of merely being competitive – I agree on that).

Also, if a team saw the 6-10 detroit Lions on their 2011 schedule coming off a 6-10 season, they also probably thought, "easy win!"

Conversely, if a team saw the Tampa Bay Bucs on their 2011 schedule coming off a 10-6 record, they probably thought, “Tough, tough game”.

Lions were 10-6 this year, and Bucs won a mere 4 games (4-12, and got blown-out in many of their losses).

The NFL is set up for parity. There is so much turn-around between teams that are good and bad each year, that it’s impossible to accurately assess any schedule.

It's always a crap shoot, but...

A lot of times you can see the turnarounds coming. Detroit was a pretty safe bet to be pretty good this year given the talent they had and how they ended last season. SF was a surprise, but it wasn’t hard to believe Jim Harbaugh could turn a team with a TON of defensive talent into a stout defensive football team pretty quickly. WE were the team no one could have seen coming this year.

When you look at next year’s opponents, you don’t see a lot of positive signs. NY will be good, Philly will probably be much better, Dallas will be good but seems to be stuck in this Romo-era mediocrity that I dont’ see changing anytime soon, Jacksonville is still years away, Miami could be tough but they could also be breaking in a rookie QB, ditto with the Redskins, the Chargers will be better. I just dont’ see any team on that list that jumps out at me as being the big turnaround story of next year. There are always a few surprises, but I’d rather have this schedule than be facing the NFC North or South or New England or even the Jets.

Completely Agree . . .

. . . The schedule does appear favorable at this point, that’s for sure. I also agree with your early breakdown of the 2012 opponents, and especially like the Cowboys “stuck in this Romo-era mediocrity” comment (completely agree with that).

As far as a possible “surprise” turnaround team on the Bengals2012 schedule, I can conceivably see the 7-9 Chiefs returning to formidable status with the return of Cassel (not great, but better than Palko and Orton), Jamaal Charles, Tony Moeaki, and Eric Berry, followed by another good draft for them. Other than that yes, the schedule does appear to be favorable.

But the Bengals need to vastly improve key personnel areas in the offseason. First and foremost, the interior OL needs to be addressed (possiblly Decastro, Cordy Glenn, or even Carl Nicks in FA), then the secondary, and possibly even a defensive playmaker at any level (i.e. another dominant d-lineman, LB, or DB – possibly acquired by drafting BPA for defensive players with second 1st round pick).

Bottom line: this team is loaded with young talent and is in a position to make multiple playoff runs in the next half-decade or so, and it starts this Saturday in the opening game of THE 2011 NFL PLAYOFFS!!!! Unbelievable! Pressure Yates (or Delhomme) consistently, and take care of the ball on offense, and the Bengals should take care of business on Saturday.

What!!!!

Sorry, but you must not watch the games if you think pacman is good. He is terrible, he gets beat on every play, he is to small for the big guys, too slow for the small guys….We need to draft a corner with our highest pick. Leon Hall will definatley lose a step after his injury, and we will need a new #1 corner to replace jjoe.

agree we need a number #1 cb
  1. hall, #3 nate, #4 jones. works fine.
Actually Kelly Jennings didn't look bad at all yesterday...

Maybe the coaches can get some good work in with him, but I’m not holding my breath. Yes, I think we definitely need to draft a #1 CB with our first pick in the draft, which will most likely be Janoris Jenkins.

jennings can stick as our #5 cb

anything more than that, we deserve the results we get

Draft Dennard and let Nate, Jones, and Hall fight it out

Whoever comes up 2, 3, and 4 in whatever order I’d be fine with. And with Jones down to at BEST the #2 spot, he can be your everyday punt returner.

We still have no idea how Hall will return. I said after his injury that I wouldn’t be COMPLETELY shocked if we ended up releasing him before the season. We’ll almost certainly draft a CB high based on that injury alone, so there’s a very real chance that by the end of the preseason he isn’t the 3rd or even 4th best CB on the roster. If that’s the case, we can’t afford to pay him what we’re paying him to be a backup.

I'm not so sure about dennard

Saw him swinging at a guy today… I think I’d pass on him. But I don’t make those decisions

He swung with Jeffery.

A guy some believe has Julio Jones/AJ Green talent. Wonder if that disrupts their draft standing. Jeffery has typically been projected in mid teens to early 20s.

Thanks for quitting, Quitter!
For Oakland Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer, coming to terms with his and his teammates’ failure to seize an AFC West title that was wholly within their grasp was a giant bummer. It was only as he released his nearly 3-year-old daughter to mingle with her mother and twin brother that it dawned on Palmer that the final Sunday of the season, and the first day of 2012, might have played out in even more maddening fashion.

"Did Cincinnati get in?" Palmer asked, mindful that the Bengals – the team for which he played his first eight NFL seasons before refusing to report last summer, commencing a stare down that led to the October trade which sent him to Oakland – had lost a pivotal game to the Baltimore Ravens.

Yes, he was told, the Bengals had backed into the AFC’s final wild-card spot.

"Are you serious?" Palmer said. "At what, 9 and 7? And they play at Houston? Cincy will beat Houston, watch."
I can't wait for during Super Bowl weekend

when Cincy is playing and Palmer hits Radio Row being a cheerleader for the Bengals and dragging us back into that crap.

LMAO!!!! I love it!!!!!!!
Not a bad schedule

Luck out getting NY and Dallas at home. One west coast trip to San Diego which will hopefully still be a bit of a mess. But road trips to Kansas City, Jacksonville, and Washington? I’ll take that any day.

Hey kids

I am planning already to get tix for the JAX game because I should be able to make it on that 5 1/2 hour drive south. When the gtame draws nearer and we know when it is it will be time to set up a road tailgate party.

Also, that Oakland game is a sure bet to be a Monday Nighter.

Can’t wait. I’d figure at least one of the 4 Baltimore/Pittsburgh games would also be a prime timer. Then we might luck out with Dallas or Philly. Should be seeing a lot fewer 1:00 games.

There's belief

that Collinsworth would beg NBC to get the Oakland/Cincy game. I sense Collinsworth has some strong feelings for Palmer.

I'd much prefer that

NBC has the best coverage. And I really like Collinsworth’s play by play. Just the chance to let him slip one out bashing Carson on national TV…giggle…

I like Sunday Night Football better than Monday Night Football anyways.
I got a better idea

Raider game — opens Monday night season
Baltimore Road game — SNF
Pittsburgh Home game — Thanksgiving night after Dallas gets blown out by the Redskins. That game is now on NBC due to some contract renegotiations (report I heard)

I no longer care about Palmer

I don’t hate him or love him, or even really care. I’m a Bengals fan and we have 2 more picks because of him.

I’m not going to boo him or cheer him. I will just keep cheering for the Bengals!

Kinda feel the same way.......

after we got those draft picks, that kind of cut the ties for me. Not that I’m not really looking forward to the going to be nationally televised game with Oakland next year thought. That will be a hot ticket…….

We say that now

But I have a feeling when Oakland week rolls around next year there’s going to be some old wounds being ripped open. Remember how pissed a lot of the guys in that locker room were. They were all very diplomatic about it in the media, but you could tell they were looking forward to getting the chance to knock him around. How about a nice 4 sack day for Dunlap?

I have no problem with players playing with a chip on their shoulder because of this.

I hope they do sack him 10+ times. I want to win and keep wining!

The opposite of love is not hate. It is indifference. Palmer is still Palmer

He showed it by taking a team that was on the way to the playoffs and stopping them short.

If Mike Brown wants to really win back the fans

He’ll have to do it this offseason. Don’t get me wrong, he’s done just about everything he can this season, but it needs to carry over. He needs to show that he wasn’t just throwing a bone to the fans. He needs to show that he is as invested in this team as he wants the fans to be, and that he knows how to bridge this years moderate success into a platform for building long term dynastic success.

He needs to be active in free agency, starting with our own players.

Collins, Fanene, Jennings, Lawson, Nelson, Rucker, Simpson and Sims all need to be re-signed IMO, while also getting a couple of pivotal FAs in the market to fill in some holes. I don’t believe he should go after a bunch of superstars, just look at how that worked for the Eagles & Jets. Just maintain the core group that was the reason for our success, and do enough outside so we can be flexible with the draft.

But if he lets a bunch of those guys walk like in the past, just watch, the wind will come out of the sail so fast it’ll make your head spin.

We did well with our 3rd place finish actually

With the exception of the AFC South/East games, we have the same opponents as everyone else in the division. But for those games:

We play Miami and Jacksonville
The birdies play New England and Houston (with Schaub back)
The squealers play New York Jets and Tennessee (Jets will probably rebound, Tenn is on the upswing)
The brownies play Buffalo and Indy (If Buffalo plays like the first half of the season they’ll be tough, and Indy will have either Manning or Luck to right the ship).

I think we definitely got the easiest path of these divisions

Agreed

Really couldn’t ask for much better with this schedule. I mean I’d prefer to get the NFC West again, but you can’t get EVERYTHING you want, right?

There is no team on the list of 2012 opponents that I chalk up as a pretty sure loss at this point

I am also pretty sure that we are not going to be on their list of sure wins..

Overall things worked out extremely well for us........

I have confidence we will draft well, I think Free Agency is the X-factor for us this year. If we can fill 1-2 holes with quality players via FA, then we can plug the rest via the draft. That’s a big “if” with our ownership, but things have been much different…..

I am hoping...

People see how great Zimmer is at defense and Marvin can coach without the headaches…FA can see the changes for the team formerly known as NFL Siberia and find it appealing. If they can land quality FAs (like they did this year with Clements and Lawson)…they can get best VALUE in the draft and not reach for need.

i am hoping

we dont lose zimmer this off season.

His shine appears to be dimmed.

There’s a small number of open teams out there and his name doesn’t appear to be around those talks, while Gruden is. He has interviewed for HC gigs before and never got them. Maybe he’s not HC material for NFL teams. Better for us then.

I think also

allot of people compared him to dick labeu also i think dc have done worse at hc then oc or other people.

Aside from Miami taking #3 from Buffalo, and which were home/away, we knew this.. still...

It’s interesting to see which games are at home. The road trip to San Diego worries me, but the Bengals are a different team now. Getting the Cowboys & Giants at home is pretty big. I’m not concerned with the Redskins, since all they’ve got is 4 or 5 RBs we’d love to have, but without a passing game or defense it shouldn’t be a problem. Arrowhead Stadium used to be a rough place to visit, but they actually have the worst home record in recent history. Also I might actually be able to go to that game!!

san diego will be a rough one for us

we’re so bad on the west coast. we’re 5-10 all time vs chargers in san diego. which might be the most wins we have on the west coast in any teams stadium..

Andy Dalton is 1-0 on the west coast

Just sayin.

denver?
Last time I checked a map Denver wasn't on ANY coast.
west of the rockies is where we suck

denver we’re like 2-13
oakland/la we’re like 1-15
san diego 5-10
seattle might be like 4-9 or something
would have to check on arizona

I think we haven't won at Denver

since like 75-76 season…

There are at least three things wrong with this comment.
what? calling denver a west coast team or not calling denver one?
Calling Denver a west coast team.

Denver isn’t even very close to the west coast.

its less verbose than saying

“cincy is not a west of the rockies team”

but if thats what it takes, will limit future references to that so all here understand the point.

Denver is also not west of the Rockies.

So please define exactly what a west coast team is for this discussion.

Semantics

For purposes of defining long trip away games, Denver is west coast. I agree with palewook. Anything from the Rockies west should be considered a west coast team for purposes of this discussion.

Which is even better because Denver is east of the Rockies.
rollseyes

u figure an easy way to say it, then let us know what you prefer.

West Coast + Denver?

;-)

came to the decision during all this contrarian feedback

the least verbose, although anal sounding way to say this in a manner that will be accepted by some of the people here:

“the bengals are not a west of the 104 longitude team.”

Then why is Cincy

in the Midwest? We are more east that west… Eastern time zone.
Just sayin’. No response necessary…

It was named the midwest a long, long time ago.

It actually was in the midwest region of America during that time. Remember that America started completely on the east coast and spreading out was a slow process. Midwest is just a name that stuck, and that doesn’t change the fact that Denver is not on the west coast. I don’t know why this is even a discussion.

"the bengals are not a west of the 104 longitude team."
what division does denver play in?
The AFC West.

The St. Louis Rams play in the NFC West. Are they on the west coast?

or Dallas in the East.

or Baltimore in the North. Always one of those silly things. This is high among pointless debates at CJ that I can recall.

You mean it's pointless because it's not even a debate if you just look at a map, right?
rollseyes

yes the bengals suck in the midwest too. they never play well in denver. the midwest broncos own the midwest bengals.

happy?

They're not in the midwest either.

They’re sort of west/central. I’m just saying they’re not a west coast team. Or anything close to it.

i asked you 5 hours ago

“u figure an easy way to say it, then let us know what you prefer.”

so you want us to refer to “denver as a sort of west central team?”

I don't care how you refer to them.

As long as it isn’t something as incorrect as “west coast team.” :)

The point still stands that Andy Dalton is 1-0 actually on the west coast.
In college they'll teach you the real geography

In high school they lie to you. Denver is really next to Hawaii.

dallas refused to reallocation when the conferences were rearranged

didnt want to lose rivals

rams are in the nfc west from being an LA team
I love that you actually changed your sig

Because tomorrow this will be looked back on as the most important debate of the season.

i like it to remind me of how silly things can get on here

figure the sig flys until next preseason, then will see what the theme of 2012 is for me.

Theme of 2012 will be...

“How does a defending champion do it again?”

I don't think you can call things silly if you're one of the ones writing those things

Just sayin…

that we had to spend 6 hours debating what the nfl calls denver?

i asked at the start of this, what people would like to have the broncos referred to, instead got 6 hours of we’re right we’re right.

No one forced you to keep typing...

… at some point you’ve gotta say, you know, this is a waste of time, we just disagree.

:)

But feel free to continue if you’d like… and I’ll continue seeing “X new comments” and then being disappointed after I click.

To be fair, we haven't been talking about this for six hours.

We’ve each probably spent 10-15 minutes on this over a six hour period. That’s the beauty of a message board.

You never know

He could be staring at his screen thinking “Reply, reply, reply! Turn yellow already!”

I know

I was being sarcastic. Denver is in a west coast division as Cincy is in the east but called Midwest? Do you get it?

Denver is one time zone removed from the west coast

Assuming the issue with the west coast is a longer flight and a bigger time difference, calling Denver a west coast team doesn’t make any sense. You might as well call Kansas City a west coast team at that point.

never thought I would say this

“can’t we all just move along? Nothing to see here!”

IT'S ALIVE!!!!!

damn, guys.. how did my comment get that many replies?

And to settle it, how about “The Bengals suck in the Mountain & Pacific time zones”?

im hopeful

that the raiders/bengals game will be on MNF.

Probably a Sunday nite game since the NFL can flex the Sunday schedule..
possibly

But since neither team is a ‘national darling’ and probably will not be expected to be a great team, it has more of the makings of a monday night game.

Obviously, the Palmer story line gives this game some interest, but the SNF games tend to be more marquee interest games.

They can only flex starting Week 10.
that'd be my preference

Sunday night football on NBC = good. I’d rather not have to watch MNF on ESPN if I can help it.

Those are some tough road games…Philadelphia, Kansas City and that defense, San Diego will retool, especially after missing the playoffs in a division that was won at 8-8, Washington..like this year and every year, they will have to show up weekly in order to win.
