Even though the Bengals lost to the Ravens in Week 17, a game they needed to win to control their own destiny and lock a spot in the playoffs, the Jets, Broncos and Raiders helped them out. With a Jets loss to the Dolphins earlier in the day, they only needed either the Broncos or the Raiders to lose to back their way in to the post season. Luckily, the Broncos lost to the Chiefs (before the Raiders lost to the Chargers) and before the game was over the Bengals knew that they were going to the playoffs no matter the outcome of the game they were playing.
Having said that here are seven thoughts from the Bengals Week 17 game against the Ravens
Point One: The Bengals are in the playoffs!

It doesn't matter how they got there, all that matters is that they are there. There are 12 teams in the playoffs and they all have 0-0 records and it doesn't matter what they did in the regular season. If the Bengals beat the Texans, they go to New England, who is not unbeatable, and if they win there they go to the AFC North championship.
Maybe I'm getting too far ahead of myself but the fact that the Bengals are in the playoffs is so exciting, especially considering where we thought they would be in the beginning of the season, that I can't help myself.
Point Two: Even though they're in, it would be nice if they were 10-6
The Bengals needed to win that last game more than the Ravens did before they knew that the Broncos and Raiders both lost. If they had lost they were out of the playoffs and if the Ravens lost, they would have still made it in as a wild card team. Instead of going all out, they came out flat and then tried to bounce back in the second half like they usually do. That may work against the lesser teams in the league but it does not work against the Ravens and it will not work in the playoffs.
Point Three: Ray Rice was a killer in 2011
Heading into the 2011 season, the Bengals had never allowed Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice to run for over 100 yards against them. The most he had ever rushed for against the Bengals was 87 yards before this season. In Week 11 he ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns and in Week 17 he ran for 191 yards and another two touchdowns. If you discount the Bengals' mistakes in those two games, their inability to stop Rice was the biggest reason they lost.
Point Four: Gresham needs to be used like this every week
Jermaine Gresham led the Bengals in receiving on Sunday with five receptions for 72 yards. A.J. Green was bottled up throughout most of the game because Ed Reed was shading to his side and even though Simpson was targeted a team high 10 times, he only had five catches for 54 yards.
For the Bengals to win in the playoffs, not only does A.J. Green need to run free but Gresham needs to have a similar game. His 72 yards in Week 17 is the second best game of his career and it would nice to see him do the same thing.
Point Five: Benson or Scott?
Benson carried the ball 13 times for 51 yards (3.9 yards per carry) against the Ravens in Week 17. He ran much tougher in the second half than in the first and managed not to fumble the ball, but he was also held out of the end zone and didn't really do much of anything. Scott carried the ball six times for 34 yards (5.7 yards per carry) and scored the team's only touchdown on a 25-yard run.
I don't trust Benson after fumbling the ball five times in Weeks 15 and 16 and he hasn't been able to run for over 100 yards three times this season. Scott showed that he is a much more explosive back than Benson is and even though he doesn't have the durability to be an every-down back in the NFL, I'd like to see an almost even split of carries on Saturday against the Texans.
Point Six: Mixed bag with Maualuga
Even though he led the team in tackles with nine against the Ravens, he was completely taken out on Rice's two long touchdown runs. On the first one he was blocked by Marshall Yonda and on the second he was blocked by Vonta Leach. Had he been able to shed either of those blocks and make a stop on Rice, we could be talking about a very different game.
All in all, though, Maualuga had the best regular season of his career and he probably would have had over 100 tackles had he not had to sit out for three games with the ankle injury.
Extra Point: Chances....
I felt that the Bengals had a good chance to beat the Steelers in the playoffs in 2005, that is until Carson Palmer went down. Even though the Bengals hosted the Jets in 2009 for another playoff game, I had a terrible feeling heading into that game. As it turned out, I was right.
I don't know why, but right now I like the Bengals chances to win in Houston. It's just a gut feeling right now but I think we may see our first Bengals playoff victory since 1990. That win, ironically, was over the Houston Oilers.

LET'S HEAR IT FOR MIKE BROWN!!!!
Split carries evenly and strategically between Benson and Scott. Continue to blitz with the Defensive Ends. Kevin Huber for MVP!

Stoked we are In the Playoffs!
Even though the game against the Ravens didn’t pan out due to poor officiating and gaping holes in the run defense. We have got to run the ball well against the Texans! Benson hasn’t produced anything but TO’s. If we can control the clock, we win!

WHO mutha f_cken DEY!
It is still insane that after everything that happened in the past 12 months we are in the playoffs. What?! Our franchise QB walked out, we had no offseason, we had a rookie QB, rookie WR, and rookie OC— and somehow we managed to finish in a good of a spot as we ever did with Mr 80million and his happy cast of divas. What the hell?! And the best part is that the future looks even brighter— with the quitter it always seemed we were trying to squeeze wins into an ever-closing window.
I tellya, if anyone says they predicted this back in February/March they’d be a lyin’ fool.

Come on man..
That was pretty damn good though, right? I should have bought a lottery ticket that day. LOL

Go Bengals! We are at the dance,Let's be this years cinderella story, and take home the handsome prince Lombardi!!
All the way to Super Bowl boys!!!
keithster - January 2, 2012
Wow you really made football super gay for a second there... haha
Luke - January 2, 2012
We are in..
And that’s all that matters for now. The thing that worries me is how incapable our offense is at certain points in the game. We have to establish a running game with Ced/B Scott early. Our run defense will play better. We have to get a better performance by Jerome(who is slowly starting to play better) and have to find a way to get Aj and or Gresham the ball easier. If only it was this easy
DT1418 - January 2, 2012
Rey had terrible game, at least the first couple series.
He won’t turn in back to back performances like that, In fact I expect our boys to play with even more urgency early on. Strip the ball go, for the pick. We failed to generate turnovers against the Ratbirds, and this cost us. We need to become a turnover machine to get far into the playoffs.
keithster - January 2, 2012
yeah, Rey has thrown a few stinkers in this year
Wasn’t he MLB in college? I wouldn’t think the transition back would be so rife with struggle for him.

We are in, believe it or not........we are in!
Now, let’s not just be happy to have made it and then lay an egg. Let’s knock Houston the F out! Who Dey?!! We’ve got to run the ball and get Jerome and Gresh involved. It will be tough for AJ and Andy to do it alone.
The Van Buren Boys - January 2, 2012
Ahhhh Jerry Glanville and the Oilers
Nothing better than Wyche versus Glanville. Those were two fun teams to watch: Houston with Moon, Givens, Jeffries and Cincinnati with Boomer, Brooks, Holman and the SWAT Team secondary.
Anthony Cosenza - January 2, 2012
I remember when Wyche kicked a field goal in the closing seconds of a 51-0 like blowout....
in Houston against Glanville just to rub it in.
The Van Buren Boys - January 2, 2012
Yup. So good!
Anthony Cosenza - January 2, 2012
absolutely a dick move
and I loved it.
only becasue Glanville was such a tool.

We need to use the TEs more. Dalton love aj but that's not goin to get us a playoff win
njbengalstat - January 2, 2012
saturday
The Houston Texans have never been to a playoff game. The Bengals have never won a road playoff game. One way or the other history will be made.

Re: Benson
Remember watching yesterday’s game and on one carry Benson got 6 yards and I thought , “Wow, great run. About time you broke one”. Then I thought to myself that there must be something inherently wrong if I classify a 6 yd. gain as “breaking one”.
Guess that happens when I anticipate a 2yd. gain every time he gets the ball.
PS: I agree that Gresham needs to see the ball more, especially if Green is doubled. No reason why he can’t be a Gronk.
CanadaBengal - January 2, 2012
holy moly, that's hilarious and sad all at once
(the “breaking one” comment)

Can we please just draft montee ball he is a beast and built for the afc north!
Bfritts45 - January 2, 2012 via mobile
i agree
James Schmid the great - January 2, 2012
i'm dying watching the rose bowl
want montee in cincy come next august. whatever it takes to land montee in the 2nd round, we need to do it. (provided richardson doesn’t fall to our 2nd pick in the 1st round – we have no choice buy to spend #17 on a cb)

Would be REALLY silly to pass Richardson up at 17
hoping he would be there for our next pick, regardless of CB need. Any CB left would be fitting right at that slot or possibly a few slots later, but Richardson will be by far the best value left on the board AND he is a major need. Remember we still have Leon coming back, Clements is here for another year, might resign Jones, and Ghee may be getting better, and Kelly Jennings definitely has gotten better towards the end of the season… I just want to see what Zimmer can do with him in an offseason. We still have to see what happens with some of our newer “project” CBs.
Luke - January 3, 2012
probably
i feel the need for a #1 cb is that dire. hall may never be the same again and nate will be one season older in 2012.
palewook - January 3, 2012
Scott CANNOT block
Not a big Benson fan but Scott cannot block at all. Dalton would get killed. I really think that Scott would get more carries if they could trust him in the passing game.
JADefense - January 2, 2012
that's what I've said all year long
that has to be the reason he isn’t seeing more time.
and when he whiffs, it was bad.
supergrover - January 3, 2012
hoping we get a change of pace back in the fa market
like LT, keep leonard for clutch downs. and let peerman/scott fight it out for the 4th slot. scott really hasn’t shown anything in 3 seasons in cincy.
palewook - January 3, 2012
Regardless of what happens during the playoff this season has been very successful in my eyes
I look forward to a full off season for Dalton to work with his WR’s, hopefully another great draft, and a couple of awesome free agents to get us back into the playoffs next year. This season couldn’t have worked out any better in those regards. Since we finished 3rd in our division we’ll get a relatively easy(er) schedule next season. Barring any major injuries, I think our chances of making back to back playoff appearances are pretty darn good!!
Kwamo - January 2, 2012
I really like our chances to pull off the win this Saturday!
We we never expected to compete this year on any level. Everyone marked us as being the worst of the worst, remember? Well, just like a season win, whatever it takes for you team to get to the playoffs is 100% fine. We face the AFCN buzzsaw 4 (maybe 5 if the Browns get a bug up their butts) times a year, and we still are the #6 team in the AFC. Good for us! Sure the Ravens game would have been great to win, but as we now know, it didn’t actually matter one bit in terms of doing what 32 teams try to do each year, and that is get to the playoffs.
It’s time for everything to come together for us and get a POST SEASON WIN! We deserve to be in the playoffs and we deserve to win. The Texans are a solid team but we should compete at every level with them. What happens next week doesn’t matter, it’s all about this moment in time.
Time to be proud of the Bengals. Time for everyone to flip out because those $#@%in Bengals are playing those lucky as hell 49ers in this year’s Superbowl! WOOT!

This Monday Touchdown: PLAYOFFS!
Was awesome and expressed all my feelings. We are in the playoffs, not many back in September thought that. Yes, 10-6 would have been better than 9-7, but I will take it. Besides, there are 20 teams out there that wish they were in our shoes. Ray Rice is scary, he can do it running or catching the ball. Gresham definitely needs to get the ball more and be targeted more. Benson scares me too of late. 5 fumbles in 2 weeks, is scary, and lack of explosiveness/power (3rd and 1, and he loses yardage), we need to get Leonard more involved too. Maualuga, he had his best game against the Texans, would love to see him do it again. We get the Texans at a pretty vulnerable spot, we got a real chance to end the curse of Bo…. :)
