The Bengals lost to the Ravens again in Week 17, but luckily for them, the Jets and Broncos (and Raiders... just in case) lost too, which sets them up for a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. They are scheduled to play in the NFL's first playoff game this season as they go on the road to play the Houston Texans on Saturday afternoon.
Since they lost to the Ravens on Sunday and backed their way into the playoffs, here is what is being said.

+ The Cincinnati Enquirer's Paul Daugherty Writes:
The Bengals lost to the Baltimore Ravens, 24-16. The Ravens know what to do this time of year. They know the roads. They are Decembrists. You like to think the Bengals are learning. But judging from this particular Sunday – and every other big-game Sunday so far this season – they’re not yet ready to take the wheel.
+ Yahoo! Sports' Michael Silver Writes:
The Bengals, who suffered a 24-16 home defeat to the Baltimore Ravens, "earned" the final wild-card spot despite losing five of their final eight games, going 0-7 against playoff teams and beating just one opponent (the 9-7 Titans, against whom they won a tiebreaker) with a winning record.
+CBSSports.com's Pete Prisco writes:
Where are all the good, young offensive coordinators? That's the trouble with trying to find a coach this season. That's why Bengals coordinator Jay Gruden will get a shot, even though he's in his first season running the Cincinnati offense.
+CBSSports.com's Gregg Doyel Writes:
And now it could continue next week at Houston, where the Bengals will face a suddenly vulnerable Texans team that has lost three straight games, none of them against postseason competition. What's more, the Texans have a possible controversy at quarterback. Rookie T.J. Yates, so impressive in emergency starts against Atlanta and (yes) Cincinnati, couldn't beat Carolina or Indianapolis, and then on Sunday he was knocked from the game with an apparent shoulder injury. Will Yates be ready for the Bengals? Or will the Texans not even worry about it and stick with veteran Jake Delhomme, whose numbers were solid in relief on Sunday?
+Doyel also writes:
The Ravens have the talent and experience to expect a Super Bowl berth. The Bengals aren't there -- there is talent in Cincinnati's locker room, but almost zero postseason experience -- but they have something almost equally compelling: They are catching the breaks at the right time.
It started last week when they beat Arizona 23-16 after Cardinals receiver Early Doucet inexplicably tripped on fourth down as he was about to haul in the game-tying touchdown.
It continued Sunday, when the Jets lost earlier in the day, and then the Raiders and Broncos lost as well, meaning the Bengals could lose to Baltimore -- as they did, of course -- and still win the AFC's second wild card.
+ FoxSports.com's Brian Billick writes:
Some people have labeled the Bengals entry into the playoffs as "backing in" because of their losing to the Ravens, yet still qualifying for the tournament. Nothing could be further from the truth. In my opinion, the Bengals can go in "walking tall." The expectation for Cincinnati was minimal given its youth on offense, starting a second-round rookie quarterback and going through the culture change from a me-first mentality to a team-first mindset in 2011. Most predicted a sub-.500 season for the Bengals, and rightfully so. For my money, Marvin Lewis is a heavy consideration for coach of the year. Not only are they deserving of the playoff spot, but I believe they will beat the No. 3 seeded Houston Texans in Houston during the wild-card round. Bravo.

One perspective
On the one hand, we did not beat a team that had a btter record than us. On the other hand, the Bengals were the only team not to lose to any teams with the same record or worse (I guess technically, the Colts and Rams did not lose to any lesser teams). I am very pleased we are going to the play-offs, I think we have a reasonable chance to win at least one game for the first time in a long time. We also did not back into the play-offs as badly as two of the division winners since we went 2-1 over the last 3 weeks while the Broncos and Texans went 0-3.

My wife informs me
THat I am wrong, the Broncos beat us, sorry.
jim0ijk - January 2, 2012
We played against 7 playoff teams...
Meanwhile NE only played against 3 and they went 1-2, with their only win against Tebow’s Broncos…

It's official
I want Montee Ball on the Bengals.
Anthony Cosenza - January 2, 2012
I wouldn't spend a second rounder on him, though.
sexsalad - January 2, 2012
what
Would you spend then
diehard bengals fan 20 - January 2, 2012 via mobile
That's my dilemma.
I don’t think he’s quite worth our pick in the second, but he won’t be there for our pick in the third. I guess I might just reach on him in the second, depending on what we see at the combine, workouts, etc.
sexsalad - January 2, 2012
Why wouldn't you?
Kid runs hard, breaks tackles, is shifty and can catch. He doesn’t have great speed, but it’s good enough. I think he’d be a good pick in the second for our WCO, IMHO.
Anthony Cosenza - January 2, 2012
what about Lamar Miller?

My choices in order for the 2nd round would be
Montee Ball, Isiah Pead, best safety

I think it's because I have a prejudice against Wisconsin HBs, and it's mostly because I love their linemen.
HBs from that school seem to often be fool’s gold because they always run behind a dominant run-blocking O-line. When it comes to the draft in the mid rounds I always say, “When in doubt, draft a Wisconsin interior lineman.” Someone who runs behind those guys might not transition well.
sexsalad - January 2, 2012
Agree but
His stats are outrageous. Just seems like an upgraded version of Benson—one that’s younger, faster and can catch.
Anthony Cosenza - January 2, 2012
I agree, and I don't think it would be a travesty if we drafted him in the second.
I wouldn’t mind it as a fan. Just not sure I’d do it if I’m the GM.
sexsalad - January 2, 2012
Good receiver out of the backfield too.......
made a nice grab on a third down conversion. Can pass block too….complete back.
The Van Buren Boys - January 2, 2012
Ron Dayne anyone?
Unbeliever - January 3, 2012
Beleive or not, Ray Rice isn't known for having great speed either
Although after Sunday this could be disputed, The point is I agree with you he would be a good pick in the 2nd and great pick in the 3rd and just because his speeds not off the charts doesn’t mean he can’t be effective. I mean he just tied Barry Sander TD record so he must be pretty good
biggie22 - January 3, 2012
Second rounder
Would be our third pick. Id be ok with that

Re the whole only-beat-1-team-with-a-winning-record thing...
…that would be 1 more team than the Pats beat.
BeerRun - January 2, 2012
It is an often used excuse. It looks good on the surface, but dig a little deeper and you find flaws with it.
Again, is it a winning record at the END of the season, or is it when you play them? When we played the Bills (3-0) and the Titans (4-3), they both had winning records…
Unbeliever - January 3, 2012
I would spend a second rounder on him he is built to play in the afc north!
Bfritts45 - January 2, 2012 via mobile
Honestly, I don't like Polk all that much.
His running style seems to be pretty upright. #NoBueno

They said that about McFadden too
Mexal - January 2, 2012 via mobile
The dude who's cracked 120 carries exactly once in his 4 years in the league?
And missed the last 9 games this year?
I don’t think he proves the point you’re trying to make. In fact, he seems a lot like a point in the favor of the other side.
BLee2525 - January 2, 2012
Boom, roasted
sexsalad - January 2, 2012
I'm with you on Polk
I’m also with you on Ball.
My guys are Doug Martin from Boise and Vick Ballard from Mississippi St. I’d much rather burn a 3rd rounder on one of those guys than spend a 2nd rounder on Polk or Ball.
Or, see if you can swing a trade for C.J. Spiller.
BLee2525 - January 2, 2012
That was the knock against Adrian Peterson too...

If we just go out
and pick up Mike Bush in Free Agency, then we can wait a year or two on a RB.
WHYUS!! - January 2, 2012
Or get both Bush and a draft pick running back to develop.
DTFCPDX - January 2, 2012
Running backs shouldn't need to develop
emeybee - January 2, 2012 via iPhone app
What he said.
The average RB doesn’t have a period of development to start off. The average RB starts early on, is as good as his line lets him be for 4 or 5 years, then flames out.

We need interior linemen
Before any running back can be considered. Interior linemen. Maybe Collins comes back as one. Or through free agency. Great thing about this year is we actually have some form of free agency! Anyway. Ball or Pead. Miller I’m not impressed with. Need to watch more of em.
Cincinnati222 - January 2, 2012 via mobile
Thomas isn't entering the draft for another couple years anyway
Oregonbengalsfan - January 3, 2012
Bring in Mike Bush.
He’s is a beast. Bush as our power back and B. Scott as our change of pace back. I like it. Also, i’m a huge Louisvile fan, so bring in my dude Mike Bush.

THE PLAY OF ANDY DALTON.
The past four games I have not been impressed with how dalton has played. His accuracy seems off. Missing targets that used to be easy completions. His stats in the second half of the season were not great. I feel he needs to step up this weekend if we want to win this game
TDOG - January 2, 2012 via mobile
Agree
I’ve seen a few of his passes in slow motion replays from the last few games appear to be wobbling. At the beginning of the season his accuracy was a bit off, but then during the middle of the season his passes were quick and precise. But like you said, these last few games he’s been off. Don’t know if it’s due to injury, defensive pressure, or what, but I hope he’s back to mid-season form this Saturday.
spif - January 3, 2012
he definitely missed a td pass across the middle at one point in the ravens game

I'm considering going to the game...
I live in Austin, about three hours away from Houston and can drive there. My issues…
1. I can’t stand being in the room with ONE person rooting against my Bengals, much less be in a sea of 60,000 people rooting against them.
2. The seats affordable for me are crazy bad.
3. It’s not like I can really provide much crowd support there haha.

Good Luck Bengal Fans
Hopefully it will be an entertaining game, no matter who wins.
SuperSerial - January 3, 2012
Don't care what they say.
They say we “backed in” the playoffs.
I say , I don’t care if we backed in, crawled in or got drug in. We are in. That is all that matters.
Name one other team that deserved to have the 6th spot any more than Cincy does. There is no other. You get past the top couple teams and the AFC is one big league of teams that are fairly even. I will guarantee thyat no team will be looking past the Bengals. This team is dangerous.
Bengals all the way to the Superbowl. Let’s do this! Who Dey
Yarin - January 3, 2012
I don't get the backed in thing
We were one of the top 12 teams in the NFL this season. That is how the playoffs are set up. We took care of what we needed to take care of and we got in. No matter how
Helmsy - January 3, 2012
What burns my toast
Watching the NFL Network on MONDAY and TUESDAY.
They would go from fawning all over Aaron Rogers Clipboard holder having a great game, to Tony Romo about in tears, to Michael Vick, to the Rex Ryan train wreck of a Jets team, and on and on, without even a mention of teams that are actually IN THE PLAYOFFS. Yes, Green Bay’s BU QB is officially on the team, but it ain’t like we will see him unless Rogers gets his throwing arm torn off. You can forget about any mention of Saturday’s games whatsoever.
UpStateMike - January 3, 2012
They will talk play-offs later in the week
They only have 4 games to talk about, and a short window where Flynn and The Jets Train Crash are news.
jim0ijk - January 3, 2012
good o lines make rbs better than they are.
We need to draft a top lineman bc its been a big need for years.
