Final GM's Report Card: Cincinnati Bengals' Mike Brown

And so another Cincinnati Bengals regular season is in the books. Is it just me, or does it seem like September was just yesterday? But time flies when you're having fun, and this year has been one of those all-to-rare good times in Bengaldom.

And some of the credit for that must be given to the most reviled man in Bengaldom, owner Mike Brown. Brown shed all the usual descriptors -- incompetent, cheap, uncaring, inflexible -- in 2011 by making or signing off on a series of key decisions that, with one notable exception, turned out to be one home run after another.

Over the course of the season, I have tracked how those decisions have been working out. The first quarter report card, which gave Brown a B-, can be found here and the second quarter report, in which his grade rose to an A-, is here. Unfortunately, other commitments caught up with me and I didn't have an opportunity to write up a third quarter report, but suffice it to say that the string of losses over that time would have knocked Brown's grade back down.

So, with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, let's look at Mike's year.

Star-divide

Decision No. 1: The Head Coach. Brown's decision to re-sign Marvin Lewis after a 4-12 season was controversial, to say the least. But Lewis rewarded Brown's confidence with a second winning season in three years, a feat not see around these parts since 1988-90. Moving forward, Lewis now has a chance to do something no coach has done since Forrest Gregg in 1981-82: lead the team to consecutive winning seasons.

There is still cause for concern. Despite coaching a team with a rookie QB and rookie No. 1 wideout to a winning record and a (backdoor) playoff berth, the Bengals fell down in their two biggest games of the year, the losses to Houston and to Baltimore in week 17. Those who believe Lewis is a good coach, but not the man who can take the team to the top now have more ammo in the wake of this season. Still, all things considered, the decision to bring back Marvin Lewis get an A.

Decision No. 2: The Offensive Coordinator. The number of Bengals fans who were unhappy to see Bob Bratkowski depart was (roughly speaking) zero. However, they were plenty of doubters when it came to his replacement, Jay Gruden, due to Gruden's inexperience in the big leagues and his last name, which raised the specter of the David Shula debacle. Over the course of the 2011 season, Jay put all doubts to rest and his shepherding of rookies Andy Dalton and A.J. Green.

The Bengals' offense finished the season ranked 20th in yards and 18th in points, a slight improvement over 2010's 20th ranking in both categories. Given the lockout, a completely new offensive system and all the changes in personnel, even that slight improvement has to be considered a major accomplishment. The call to change coordinators and the selection of Jay Gruden nets Mike an A.

Decision No. 3: The Wide Receiver. The Bengals have A.J. Green, Pro Bowler, and a couple late-round draft picks in 2012 and 2013. The New England Patriots have two fewer picks and some overpaid guy named Chad Ochocinco buried at the back of their wide receiver depth chart. If there were a grade higher than A+, it would go here.

Decision No. 4: The Cornerback. Like the old saying goes, you cant win 'em all, and the decision not to aggressively pursue signing Johnathan Joseph came back to bite the team hard. I'm sure some will argue that Joseph was intent on leaving and nothing the Bengals could have offered would have stopped him, and perhaps that's true, but the bottom line is that the Bengals had long been reluctant to extend Joseph due to his injury issues and preferred reaching a long-term deal with Leon Hall.

Ironically, this year it was Hall who got knocked out with a season-ending injury and Joseph who played in every game for his new team, the Houston Texans. Combined with injuries to Joseph's replacement Nate Clements and Adam Jones, and the failure of the Morgan Trent experiment, the Bengals' secondary was decimated. In 2010, Cincinnati had arguably the best young CB tandem in the league. In 2011, they struggled just to get guys on the field.

Brown's grade here is a D.

Decision No. 5: The Quarterback. Andy Dalton's performance in his rookie year in Cincinnati has been nothing short of amazing. The team's disgruntled former QB, Carson Palmer, was traded to Oakland for at least one and possibly two first-round picks in 2012 and 2013. Give Mike Brown an A+ for this one, too.

Extra credit. Jim Lippencott retired. A 2-for-1 BOGO to sell out the final game. Lowering season ticket prices on more than 14,000 seats.

Wait, we are still talking about Mike Brown, right? Unbelievable. For the season, someone give this man an A.

Now, let's see if the front office can keep up the good decision-making in 2012.

Poll
Same poll options as before. The % after each question are the percentage that chose that grade in the Q1 & Q2 polls. So what's Mike Brown's final grade?
A - only a genius could have kept us from 0-8 (Q1 5%, Q2 30%)
160 votes
B - the blind squirrel might have hit a jackpot this year (Q1 38%, Q2 61%)
615 votes
C - well, it hasn't been a debacle...yet (Q1 27%, Q2 3%)
115 votes
D - if it wasn't for Mike Brown we'd be 8-0 (Q1 6%, Q2 0%)
22 votes
F - as in "F Mike Brown" (Q1 22%, Q2 4%)

Revisiting what I said months ago...

This whole season, and possibly mike Brown’s whole career as “GM” will likely be judged by the Carson trade.

What I said at the time was that he was INCREDIBLY lucky to have every single possible star align the way it did…Al Davis dies, Hue Jackson coaching the Raiders, Jason Campbell breaking his collar bone days before the trade deadline, Oakland being in playoff contention, Andy Dalton contending for ROTY…I mean that’s a crazy jackpot of coincidences lining up in Mike Brown’s favor.

BUT…It’s also true that any other owner or GM in the league almost certainly would have traded Carson long before that point, therefore getting a VASTLY lower price. So you can say that Mike Brown that got lucky and hit a jackpot, or you can say that his particular brand of stubborn business “acumen” FINALLY paid off to the highest order. I don’t think it excuses a generation-spanning record of bad business and football moves, but it certainly does seem like EVENTUALLY something, just by playing the numbers, like this was going to hit. And it hit big. And we should all be happy about that. Screw whether or nto Mike Brown gets credit for it. Just let me see a Lombardi trophy at PBS in the next decade.

Maybe he has to sign off on decisions,

but the rest of the organization had to bring him to that point kicking and screaming. The Dalton pick is the perfect example. Reports said that Brown wanted Mallet, but the coaching staff wanted Dalton. A monkey with a “Yes” stamp could have done the same thing.

So in conclusion, I’d give him about as much credit for this year as the monkey gets.

He could have said no

Give him credit for realizing that others know more than he does and relenting to their choices.

Since I like analogies ...

That’s sort of like saying a guy who steps out of the way of an oncoming car is a good decision maker. Sure, that was the right decision at the time, but why the hell was he standing in the middle of the road in the first place?

Fans weren’t coming to the stadium, primarily because they were fed up with Brown, so he finally had to budge. He fired Brat. He put some tickets on sale. And he drafted two rookies to replace a QB (who was so sick of the organization that he forced a trade) and WR (who he could have gotten multiple first round picks for a few years ealier).

So yeah, I give him credit for stepping out of traffic, but I’m not going to pat him on the back for it either.

No actually that's more like saying

he could have been the Brown we’ve all come to know and completely screwed the team again. BUT HE DIDN"T.

Some people…

Let me be a little more specific.

I feel like you are overreacting to my comments which I was making sort of tongue-in-cheek, so let me at least explain why I’m not that excited about Brown’s year before you lump me in the “some people” category.

It doesn’t seem right to me to ignore the first half of the year, which featured a trainwreck of key players leaving the organization (which most would attribute directly to Mike Brown) and then turn around and give him an “A” for decisions that most of us don’t even think he was making. I gave him a “C” when I voted. I think that’s fair.

I’d give Marvin Lewis an “A.” Zim an “A.” Gruden an “A” Heck, I’d give the entire team an “A” on the year for pulling out a brilliant season despite the hurdles that they had to clear. Yes, Mike Brown has made some good moves this year, but he also put the team in a really bad position to start the season. That’s not “A” work in my book.

This year has been excellent....

and brown has been improving every year for the last 8 years at least…

dog him if you want for not maxing out our cap. but how has that worked for the raiders/cowboys/redskins none of which are in the playoffs…

I wish he had traded Chad in 2009 like was reported

but that would have, unfortunately, been a PR nightmare. Chad was too popular.

With who?

Wasnt popular with the QB
Just the fact Chad iis still playing is a fluke
NE expected him to contribute, instead he is just a practice squad guy
With a huge twitter following

with who?

You can’t be serious?
2009 Chad Ochocinco was a fan favorite. He had been among the NFL leaders in receiving for almost all of his career.
The run of the mill fan (who buys the extra tickets and the jackets and the hats and the jerseys) liked Chad Ochocinco.
Chad was one of the bright lights of the Bengals, coming off a down year where the QB was out injured. He was the face of the Bengals.

I’m not arguing that a trade would be without merit.
I’m not arguing that the fan love was deserved or not.
I’m reflecting on what I recall being the state of the Bengals before 2009.

I agree with you Supergrover...

Chad in 2009 was still a playmaker. It was after that, that he changed his name to Ochocinco and became a T(Wannabe) Star that wanted to also play football…

He may have sold ticket's

IMO he was the single reason, the franchise had to start all over
I guess some people make decisions based on $$$$$,like most athlete’s(and Mike Brown)

Even though Chad had those number’s,it was obvious every game he missed, the backup’s had better number’s,he hasnt been a legit number 1 for at least 3-4 years now

"he hasnt been a legit number 1 for at least 3-4 years now"

My point exactly. In 2009, he was still a contributing force on this team. Since he did not get traded, he has gone downhill, and this year, he was a total fiasco…

His name change became official

before the start of the 2008 season

chad johnson was great

chad ochocinco sucks

Actually,

A good executive hires good people to make solid business decisions. So, in effect, since Mike hired the people who fought for Dalton, you are saying he is doing a good job.

understanding that this was NOT how it operated in prior years,

meaning that Brown and family reportedly made all final personnel decisions, you have to acknowledge that he either has changed the way he makes final personnel decisions (in which case he needs credit) OR he has loosened the method that the final decisions are made (to where he is the proverbial monkey), in which case he needs credit.

Something is different than the 1990’s. He deserves a modicum of credit.

this id different than respect

I don’;t think he earned any respect from the fans. He still seems to be watching from a high tower looking upon the dirty masses. I don’t know if it’s just a shitty way he has when out in public or if it is representative of his inner self, but it’s what we get to see.

Some respect might come with (forget the jungl’ers nickname, might have been eric) a public apology or recognition that he was doing something wrong in the past. I don’t expect that.

This is the best part of marvin still being here

he is wrestlign control away from brown.. and brown has begun to listen to and trust marvin more and more…

which eventually will lead to ML being the first Bengals GM

Good luck in the playoffs!

I had to go to the local sports to watch the games this last Sunday. Most folks were leaving by the time I got there to watch the late afternoon games, so I sat by a Bengals fan and we watched the AFC North games. We invited a Ravens fan to sit with us and so the three of us watched the Bengas game and the Ravens game at the same time.

The Ravens fan, whom I had gotten to know over the course of this season, kept giving me some really strange looks, when I would yell, Here We Go Bengals, Here We Go.

Sure would be nice to have the Bengals and Steelers meeting in the AFC Championship game.

meant Bengals and Steelers games.....
Tough loss for you guys with

Mendenhall being on IR for the playoffs….

Sounds like an odd peace accord!

Good luck, but not too much ;)

Sorry about Mendenhall. Don’t like facing him, but I acknowledge he is good.

From what I have seen THIS YEAR....

I will give him and A…how do you not?…I get it…he got lucky…or Marvin is really running the show..bottom line:
THIS IS WHAT HE HAS DONE THIS YEAR==

1. Had possibly the best draft in Bengals history
2. Got rid of Ocho/T.O distraction
3. Got rid of Brat
4. Got very high value from player who wasnt even on roster
5. Lowered ticket prices
6. took out full page add in Cincinnati Enquirer saying thank you to the fans
7. Gave a 2for1 deal to create a great atmosphere for the final game of the season
8. Had a hand in bringing hope to the jungle again

That is about everything I could of asked for(besides hire a GM and a few more scouts) ….Is it luck? maybe…but these are facts about this year….WHODEY

my point is on this

I find it hard to believe that Mikey did not have his hand in almost everyone of the things that happened above…I am still cautiously optimistic…

Ok.

If he doesn’t have his hand on everything…but the fact he gave some control to Katie and Marvin is HUGE now. 8 years ago? Marvin didn’t have control. Katie was just learning the ropes. She’s gonna be running this team whole very soon.

I believe that Katie is now this team's GM.

And so far she has done everything right. I look forward to the future under Katie’s reign and I believe that she will hire a GM very soon. I hope that we, as fans, embrace Katie and laud her improvements and accomplishments regularly.

I don't think she's the GM.

That requires an understanding of football which she has often been said to be lacking. I believe she is simply the President. She gets her shortcomings. She’s willing to be media friendly. Mike is simply the owner now.

+ 1

Well put

He won PFT's Executive of the Year.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/01/02/pfts-postseason-awards/

He takes credit for an amazing offseason and an amazing year. But those of us in the know, know. He did nothing but take credit. It’s Marvin and his staff that chose AJ and Dalton. It’s Marvin who picked Jay Gruden. It’s Katie who forced him to make the Palmer trade. It’s Katie who made the announcement that the team will be lowering ticket prices. It’s the front office, minus MB, that made this year such a success. But, perhaps he deserves the accolades for conceding personal defeat and allowing his staff to make the big decisions.

I think I like Katie

I remember a couple years ago reading, I think here, that rumor was she had begun taking a more significant role in the Bengals day to days. If that is the change that won Mikey Boy the EotY, I don’t care! He can have the award, I want the team that is enjoyable to watch and leaves me proud to follow.

MB still makes the final decision

He could have said “Draft Mallet not Dalton.” and it would have happened. If this year he listened to his football advisors before making a football decision that is good decision making.

One small point to consider regarding ML and MB. They let Brat go and......

the Raiders actually – excuse me as I LOL Oh wait, I need to LOL one more time. – The Raiders actually (still laughing) actually HIRED the guy!!! Compared to these guys MB is Einstein. On my visit to the Raiders board there are many different views on why they missed the playoffs. Everyone though is calling for Brat’s head. He has to be the least popular person in Raider Nation. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Brat hanging in effigy – maybe even in person.

Breshnahan?

Their D coordinator? Cause Brat is in Atlanta as the Falcon’s QB coach

Yea, I get these guys names mixed up. They are both peas in a pod and equally incompetant.
very true...

Matt Ryan has not had the same success this year that he had in the past. I still can not understand how Chuck Bresnahan keeps on getting re-hired as a Defensive Coordinator…

One disagreement

I would say that the signing of Nate Clements deserves a little more recognition. I would hate to see our secondary without him. He has done an amazing job this season. I would up the CB grade to a B.

I agree

I was going to post that he deserves a C not a D for pulling in the best available corner, then trading spme picks that probal won’t make the roster for Jennings and Mays. I know a lot ot guys on the board don’t like Jennings. Ask, what if when Hall went down, we had Jones, Trent and Ghee in the backfield instead of Jones, Clements, and Jennings. I don’t think we go to the play-offs. Regardless how bad our secondary has been, it could have been worse.

Mays may be better than any Safety in the draft.

There's other factors

The medical staff revamped—B or A.
The lack of an indoor practice facility—D.
The lack of more scouts—D.
The lack of an outside G.M.—D.
The press conferences to start the season—F

Though Scrooge has budged on some things, work still has to be done. Overall, I’d give Brown a B for the season. It started off horribly, but he really came through on some big things after.

I know that it still means he's cheap...

but isn’t agreeing to share the Bearcats Bubble a sign that he’s at least willing to make some changes with the indoor facility, even if it’s a measure of inches. At least they don’t trek up to Mason anymore. Sharing an indoor facility with a college team is slightly less humiliating then waiting for Little Jimmy’s birthday party to conclude at Wall2Wall.

lol

That press conference was abysmal….It looked like both Marvin and Mikey just got into a huge fight and finally settled on something right before they came in the room…..hilarious.

Not spending up to the cap

as usual… D

(e.g. should have over-offered for Donte Whitner who was yetannuder head-fake free agent to come through Cincinnati)

It is no longer fun to use MB as a punching bag after this season...check.
Should be Grading Marvin

It’s clear now Marvin has more control over the direction of the team based on what happened this year. Mike will not say he’s (Marvin) is GM but he is defacto GM at this point.
