Senior Bowl 2012, Day Two: Bengals Continue to Make the Rounds With Prospects

Yesterday we informed you all of the Bengals scouts and coaches speaking with a couple of prospects at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. First, it was leaked that the Bengals seemed heavily interested in hometown running back out of the University of Cincinnati, Isaiah Pead.

Then it became public knowledge that the team also spent some time chatting with Boise State University running back, Doug Martin. It's becoming obvious that the Bengals are highly interested in taking a running back in this year's draft.

Shane Hallam of www.draftcountdown.com has a breakdown of who each team spoke to on day two of Senior Bowl week, and the Bengals spent time with two intriguing prospects.

Star-divide

The first, University of Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson, is a very interesting player. He had an excellent 2011 season for the Badgers and has been looking good in the early part of this week. His knock is that he is short for an NFL quarterback and may not have an elite arm, though Wilson did play professional baseball for a brief period. With the emergence of Andy Dalton, it's unlikely that the team would use any high picks on another quarterback.

The second prospect that they were linked to on day two is much more telling. Chris Polk of the University of Washington is an exciting player who would fit the West Coast Offensive scheme well. He has good speed and good hands, though durability concerns and a slow start to the week for Polk are knocks on him. He is the third running back prospect that the Bengals have spoken to in two days and will be on the Bengals radar when they pick in the first and second rounds.

Though a lot of this can be a smoke and mirrors act, the Bengals do rely heavily on the Senior Bowl in their scouting process. Without the benefit of coaching the squads as they have had in years past, these interviews and "chat sessions" become critical components when looking at drafting a player.

Bad Idea

they should have spend another day with Pead or Ganaway instead of Wilson when we are already set

Look at the Ravens, they looked at 10 players.

No reason spending time with Wilson means they can’t talk to Ganaway. Even if there is only 1 scout there.

the Ravens probably have more people there

and more people in general.

Who Dey RB

If the Bengals are looking at these guys then it tells me they’re waiting till the 3rd round or later to draft a runningback. Which means first round get Barron and Kirkpatrick!

I disagree

I think they are trying to get as much info on a player as possible. Could be a typical smokescreen. You never know but the good thing is that they are definately interested in drafting a Rb and thats definately what we need to do.

I don't know about smokescreens

I there is only 1 scout there doing the talking, and he’s doing it as smoke screens I’d be piiiissed.
However, if all tE coaches are sending time talking to diff folks then fine smoke away

I agree...

I think Michael Bush is a target in FA… so they are looking at round 3 and later for a RB… I also like Barron and Kirkpatrick in round 1… then OL in round 2

Guess we've solved the mystery of where we'll be finding our RB next year

Glad to see we’re starting early on our scouting of these guys. Gruden’s going to have a big decision to make. He’s going to have at least 2-3 first round caliber guys to choose from with at least the 17th pick. And if he wants to wait until the 2nd round that makes the number balloon. Going to be a really big decision. A couple of these guys could become stars and a couple of them could be huge busts. I’m not going to pretend like I can accurately predict which, though I have my preferences. You know Gruden’s going to be losing sleep over it.

Due-Diligence

They’re going to talk to a ton of people. What they’re doing right now is not indicative of what they’ll be doing in late April.

I dont know bout yall BUT

that’s whack scouting, we have two first rd picks and we interview only 4 players in two days? Come on this without a doubt is probably our biggest draft EVER!!! We miss out here and we will just be same ol bengals, if we do our job scouting and fill right spots and we can be elite next year. That said is gotta we gotta get aggressive now and interview every player. And all the rb we talked with will be gone by time our 2nd rd pick, so I guarantee we take one in 1st.

The Bengals one scout

usually just attends Georgia games.

lol

Georgia ain’t let is down yet has it? Hell every SEC player we get produce.

CINCY JUNGLE WRITERS.......

Can you do what you did last year and make a daily list of the players the bengals talked/scouted. Thanks in advance.

How do they decide who coaches this game?

And I like that their talking to some good RB’s.

NFL office chooses...

the worst 2 records usually get it… since Indy and the Rams went through coaching changes it went to Minn and Wash… guess Cleve declined..

DOUG MARTIN!

Boise St. RB Doug Martin is such a tough runner, the guy is like a bowling ball.

Doug Martin of Boise St. was the best running back on the field today for the North squad and it wasn’t even close. While not known for his explosiveness Martin displayed good acceleration through the hole and flashed enough speed to get outside and turn the corner. Martin also showcased his hands as a receiver, catching a number of dump off passes, and the toughness is still there as evidenced by his determined running in 11-on-11’s. Martin was definitely one of the stars of the day

Cincinnati RB Isaiah Pead wasn’t bad but didn’t really stand out either. Pead runs low and showed some shiftiness but his change of direction in 11-on-11’s was just average at best and he also bobbled a pass during drills.

I like Martin

I think he will be a second round pick…hopefully to Cincinnati.
