The Cincinnati Bengals will be in the market for a cornerback early in the 2012 draft. With starters Leon Hall rehabbing an Achilles injury and Nate Clements getting another year older, it's inevitable that the team will be looking at the position. Throw into the mix that Adam Jones is a free agent and Brandon Ghee has yet to contribute much and the position group is pretty thin.

Fortunately for the Bengals, the 2012 draft class is pretty deep at the position. One of the names that has frequently been linked to Cincinnati is Nebraska's Alfonzo Dennard. Though not the most dynamic playmaker at the position, he brings solid cover skills and decent size--two attributes that still-defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer likes. The Bengals staff has had the opportunity to get an up-close look at Dennard as he's been participating in practices for the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.

Unfortunately, for both Dennard and the Bengals, he is capping off a rough week of practice by pulling out of the game due to a hip injury.

Star-divide

This injury continues to pave the way for the stocks of North Alabama's Janoris Jenkins and Georgia's Brandon Boykin to rise, who by most accounts have had great weeks in Mobile. Another name at the position that is floating around is that of Alabama cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick, who is not participating.

The issue with Jenkins and Kirkpartrick are that of character/drug concerns. Jenkins was once viewed as an elite talent while at the University of Florida, but was kicked out of the program because of multiple problems. He then transferred to North Alabama and has turned heads this week. Kirkpatrick's run-in was much more recent, as he was caught with marijuana in his possession. Dennard doesn't have these issues, but the injury does bring up a red flag. He also wasn't as dominant of a player once his counterpart Prince Amukamara left for the 2011 NFL Draft.

It's very likely that most of these names will be available to the Bengals when they select at the No. 17 and No. 21 spots in the draft. It's just a matter of with whom they want to place their chips. They could roll the dice on a potentially dynamic player with a spotty off-field record (as they've done numerous times in the past), or choose to go with a solid character and player who may not be as dynamic. We'll see where they go, but Dennard's best shot at impressing the Bengals will now have to lie with the Combine and/or his Pro Day.

I will get an erection the size of the empire building if we land Kirkpatrick
I was all for Dennard

Til I began to watch tape. I think he will be a productive pro but he has character concerns on-field. Alshon Jeffries was eating his lunch in their bowl game this year and he lost his cool and got ejected. He has had similar situations through his career

+200000000000000000000000

My thoughts exactly

With that being said

Im beginning to think Bengals go corner in round 2. After Claiborne, all the other corners that are projected in round 1 have some flaw or red flag. With CB’s being deep this year, I think they can get one in round 2 that can contribute right away.

My thoughts exactly.......

with many of these guys after Kirkpatrick (not even mentioning Claiborne, long gone) being so even…….why spend a first on one? One, two or maybe three will be there in the 2nd. Get better value in the first instead of reaching because of need.

I'd go ahead and take Jenkins.

Yeah he has had run ins in the past but I haven’t heard anything bad about him while at N. Alabama. He is an elite talent that hurt his high first round stock, but if he could be had at 21 we could either have a massive headache or someone capable of starting very soon. Its a risk and I know Marvin Lewis probably won’t take him, but if he pans out it would go a long way for the pass D.

You take the elite talent

where you can get it..

if due to character concerns. both jenkins and krikpatrick slide which do you want? @17 or @21

A guy with Character issues is a guy you can not count on

to even show up on Sunday See Cedric, Adam and now probably Jerome. I’ll take a steady hard worker, who will do anything to get on the field, over a guy who is selfish enough to engage in behavior that may keep him off the field.

Jerome never had character issues.

Frostee did. Scott did. Dunlap did. And they all seem to be okay, no?

yeah I dont care too much about character issues

This is the NFL…unless its something serious…who cares…this is a business…the ability to make plays rules all….period…

I feel that way also

But Jenkins has not shown me 1st rd talent this week at practice. We still have 3months to draft so things can change over night so u never know bout any of these guys.

Jerome did. They weren’t public knowledge though.

From what Zimmer said on Bengals.com

I think if the 2nd best DT is on the board and the 4th best corner is on the board they will take the DT. He said he is looking to upgrade ALL positions.

aannnd that's a wrap on Denard....Jenkins anyone

Stephon Gilmore also

I'm liking Gilmore more and more

I’d love him over anyone except Claiborne

I like you

josh or jason we need u here

Please open thread bout what Zimmer said. We have only one starter on d that’s earned right to be named starter. Everybody take up more for players than coaches do.

You think Zimmer is going to show his hand

you are sorely mistaken… sheesh

ok

Been pretty much consistent of what he said every game. Please just say man u know what, u know what u be talking bout. Were trying go to next level, either get better with off season training or we looking to up grade u.

"Please just say man u know what, u know what u be talking bout."

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHA

ok

It’s strange we had q top 5 d all year but only had 1 pro bowler, had lower ranked offense with 3 pro bowlers. Stats mean squat

Top 5 D is because of the d-line rotation, and all the Bengals pro-bowlers except for AJ Green are replacements for the super bowl players.
I'm not happy

To hear dennard is hurt, but I’m thrilled that this will decrease the likelihood of us picking him. I feel like I’ve said it 1000 times, I don’t want to see dennard in stripes.

Agree.....I think picking Dennard in the first will be much like what we got with Rivers......

an ok to just above average player, which is what I don’t want from one of our first round picks. Take the BPA at another position if they have the likelihood of becoming an “elite” player, I just haven’t seen that from Dennard.

I don't wish injury on anyone but I think this helps the Bengals

Everyone seems to be on the Dennard bandwagon mainly b/c of his size and his 2010 season. Clements and Hall are steady. The Bengals need a playmaker. I like either going after Asante Samual in FA, looking to trade up for Claiborne or waiting until Round 2 to get a corner. I don’t want them wasting a pick on Dennard in the first.

Already have one Leon Hall

Dennard seems like a solid all around CB like Leon Hall. While that is all well and good, I think we need more of a Jonathan Joseph type that can be matched up on the other teams top receiver. Hall is a very good cornerback, but he lacks top end speed. We really need a corner that can keep up with the Mike Wallaces and Torey Smiths of the world.

We don't know how well Hall will be next year after his injury.
