The Miami Dolphins Sign Bengals DB Coach Kevin Coyle As Their Defensive Coordinator

Kevin_coyle_johnathan_joseph_medium

The Miami Dolphins have hired Bengals defensive backs coach Kevin Coyle on Friday, becoming Miami's newest defensive coordinator according to NFL Network Insider Jason La Canfora. Coyle will replace Mike Nolan, who joined the Atlanta Falcons in the same function over the offseason. Coyle appeared to be a favorite for the job from the start. After NFL Network Insider Jason La Canfora reported that Miami was interested, the Dolphins were granted two interviews, the first of which took place on Wednesday. It was initially surprising that the Bengals would even allow the interview in the first place, after rejecting the Philadelphia Eagles a request for an interview last year.

Star-divide

Earlier in the day on Thursday, Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland announced that the team was converting back to a base 4-3 defensive philosophy, generating speculation that hiring Coyle was all but a certainty.

With Coyle leaving, Cincinnati will have to find a new defensive backs coach to replace him. Earlier this week we offered two choices in former Dolphins intern head coach Todd Bowles and if the team stayed internal, then assistant defensive backs coach Paul Guenther.

Coyle joined the Cincinnati Bengals in 2001 as a defensive assistant before a promotion in 2003, becoming the team's secondary coach, where defensive backs registered 133 interceptions during that span. He also helped send Deltha O'Neal (2005) and Tory James (2004) to the Pro Bowl with guys like Johnathan Joseph and Leon Hall on the cusp of being named themselves -- they were alternates.

What's more impressive is his recent work with Reggie Nelson and Adam Jones, both experiencing a rejuvenation to their respective careers -- and Chris Crocker four years ago (though not so much today).

From everyone at Cincy Jungle, congratulations to a Bengals coach receiving a promotion after 11 years with the organization.

We need more of our assistants getting promotions

U don’t nobody come after ur players and coaches its for a reason and its not good. Now let’s go sign Alabama or VT db coach.

Zimmer

Will have his hand in who is brought up to fill in this position( or brought in from the outside …..

he should have 95% say so

He gotta work thru him it should be his hire

wish him luck

he helped a ton in cincy. working with quality prospects like jojo, hall, and even salvaging nelson’s career.

I dont give him credit for Hall, Joseph, Nelson

U don’t get credit for average 1st rd picks. Joseph went on to make pro bowl with Texans and he never played at that level with us. Nelson top 10 pick so still average and Hall always been average. Outside of Hall and Joseph our secondary has been weak links on defense past years.

we're of different views here

my standards higher

I can’t pat u on back for being average with loaded 1st rd draft picks. Everybody but Crocker basically was best top 3 at there position coming out of college. No pro bowlers?

what?

do you even understand how pro bowl voting works? thats hardly a good standard for quality control.

as for 1st round picks equal success in the nfl, therefore it takes no coaching, wrong. nelson was a bust of a 1st round pick in jacksonville.

So Rivers, Smith, Gresham, and Hall are bust?

Dude where u get ur info from? Nelson had better years in Jax then he then had for us. Nelson actually produced more than all of them if u wanna be technical. He was considered bust for other NFL teams standards for being Top 10 pick. But here we think Zimmer or Coyle revived his career.

Reggie Nelson was the 21st pick in the 1st round...
Also, his numbers for the last two seasons with Cincy...

are nearly equal or better than they were for his 3 years with Jacksonville…

He played at or near a Pro-Bowl level.

And if he were on the Pats or Steelers he would have gotten in.

aside from making couple extra tackles

This wasn’t his best year fellas.

Okay here goes:

With Jax

2007-2008: Tackles 62 Sacks 1 INT 5 FF 1 PD 11
2008-2009: Tackles 55 Sacks 0 INT 2 FF 0 PD 4
2009-2010: Tackles 70 Sacks 0 INT 0 FF 0 PD 5

In Cincy

2010-2011: Tackles 54 Sacks 0 INT 2 FF 1 PD 7
2011-2012: TACKLES 85 SACKS 2 INT 4 FF 2 PD 12

Yet you say “This wasn’t his best year fellas” Yes, his rookie year he had 1 more INT, however, all other stats are better than he has ever had…

pray appears to equate probowl with skill

agree nelson would have been a lock for the probowl this season if he had played in any big market or a team favored by the sports writers.

probowl voting is nothing more than a popularity contest by the league sponsers, sports writers, and fans.

I quit trying

cause it’s useless. It’s like hitting your head against a brick wall, over and over and over…

I agree with you Oregonbengalsfan...

I can not understand why this guy wants to blow the whole team up….

same reason why Zimmer said were looking to upgrade all positions

Stop acting like our players are almighty when coach is saying otherwise. Don’t argue with me go tell Zimmer he got a bunch of great players. He go laugh at yall, like man theses fans in Cincy sweet. U don’t even gotta win or produce and they still love u.

RE:

Coaches say that every year at this time of year.

coaches got to play poker
packers, saint, patriots, texans, or no other playoff team

Says that we could upgrade every single position on his side of ball. If anything them teams just look for depth type players never go into draft sayin we could get a whole crew of impact players.

RE:

And most people are able enough to read between Zimmer’s comments. He’s an emotional guy that uses his comments to remind the players they have that they must keep improving. He’s always done that. This really is nothing more than par for the course.

i miss the paul brown times

paul would walk over to guys coming off the field to remind them after a screw up, “if i see you do that again, i’m going to need to draft someone to do your job better next season.”

who wants to blow the team up?

i never said anything of the sort. i wish coyle well and thanked him for the he did here. recognizing he helped save nelson’s career. which is what started this whole thread with you..

He's talking about pray4gm11
damn

i got pray and pemci confused for a second. thanks oregon. never mind mind my question…

No problem.. :)
Not you...

Pray wants 25+ turnover on this team by next season…

i got confused for by the 2 names until oregon straightened me out
No problem... :)
cant follow why you are bringing up rivers, smither, gresham

or the idea they are busts. what are you trying to convey? are you suggesting that 1st round picks are always quality or arent or what?

if you want to believe nelson was a considered a success in jacksonville, feel free, can’t help you with that.

we dont call them bust so why was nelson considered one?

His numbers are equal or better. And no I’m not suggesting it was success in Jax. But if he got equal numbers than what he had there why he get to be considered successful now?

Because it took him 3 years to do it there...

and he accomplished the same here in under 2 years…

we neef to have meet and greet debate session

Because Yall don’t watch or follow football. Nelson had over 65 tackles 1 sack 6 int 1 ff his rookie year. Stop just reading blog sites, dude been a player.

Look again, I just listed his stats DUDE...

And he NEVER had 6 INT’s in any one season

his rookie season was solid

what happened after his rookie season is the reason he got run out of jacksonville. nelson is listed on most jags draft bust lists anywhere from 1-5. check on some of the links I listed below to see how the jags fans felt about nelson.

RE:
Nelson had better years in Jax then he then had for us

Career high in tackles w/ the Bengals in 2011
10 turnovers in two seasons w/ the Bengals, 8 in three seasons w/ the Jaguars
19 passes defensed in 2 seasons w/ Bengals, 20 in three seasons w/ the Jags
1 TD with the Bengals, 0 with the Jaguars

Career opp. passer rating w/ the Bengals: 71.7
Career opp. passer rating in last two seasons w/ the Jags: 135.7

Thank you,

Was just about to do something like that myself. :)

why would you undermine your own point?
and i was confused again

sorry pemci

No need to apologize... :)

Your comment confused me for a little bit, but I was able to follow along. :)

ok

Ok ur basically on par for ur career nothing special. I’ll take them 2 extra int then 15 extra tackles, I’m just sayin. And teams don’t have to pick in him now because we have other weak links so that’s reason for opp. passer rating. And ur in 5th year in NFL and ur major improvement is u can say I set a career high in 15 tackles?

Don't like the facts when they

are presented to you, so now you change the argument I see….

That's why its useless
I see what you mean... :)

Thank YOU…. :)

i just cant believe anyone actually believes nelson had a solid career in jacksonville

but pray is proving i’m wrong about that

I really wish I could find the comment again

but he commented the reason Zimmer couldn’t get a head coaching job is because he can’t coach…

i think the reason zimmer cant get a head coaching job is the reasaon we love him as our DC

he’s brash. works for me. screw the coddling.

+1

I love having Zimmer back!

i didnt put no name on it

His numbers are basically same here. So how was he a bust though. Prove me wrong?

You were proved wrong in multiple posts.

You just refuse to read them, I guess.

In Jacksonville QBs picked on him and earned a 136 QB rating throwing toward him. In Cincy, QBs only manage a 72 QB rating throwing in his direction.

He wasn’t successful at keeping the ball from the intended target while in Jacksonville, and he is successful at keeping the ball from the intended target in Cincinnati. It’s a simple difference to understand.

Okay I will bite:

“I’ll take them 2 extra int then 15 extra tackles,”

WHAT 2 Extra INT’s? He had ONE more INT than he did his rookie year. ONE not 2/TWO…Also, he had ONE more FF last year than he did his rookie year, he he accounted for the SAME number of TURNOVERS (6) that he had in his rooke year, plus he had 15 MORE tackles!

Ff dont count if ur team dont recover

And them.tackles were gang tackles that squat don’t count.

And BOOM went the dynamite lol!!!
u can never boom me lets do math

In 3 so called horrible seasons with Jax
He got 187 total tackles with 17 being assisted tackles.

In 2 so called pro bowl years for bengals
He got 149 total tackles with 46 being assisted.

Help me with me and what really matters when it comes to tackles. So what’s that a avg of 57 SOLO tackles with Jax and 41 solo tackles with bengals.

You do understand you

are comparing 48 games to 32 games right? Of course his numbers with Jacksonville are going to be better….

I broke down the avg I knew excuses were gonna come

Argue amongst yourself...I AM DONE WITH YOU!
By the way, no you do not win

and no your point is not proven, Just like Oregon said, it is like hitting a brickwall over and over again with you. It just becomes obnoxious and intolerable…

Then it's clear you don't know how to divide.
hell if you take his rookie season out

and compare 2008-2009 vs 2010-2011 it tells a whole different story.

thats dumbest crap ive ever heard

Ok take out this year and then compare his stats

an even 1:1 comparison is the dumbest thing you've ever heard of?

really?

you’ll see far worse in life as you get older. impressive you can the web at your age~

seriously though, you’ve been asking the whole thread for people to compare 3 seasons in jacksonville vs 2 seasons in cincy. while admitting his rookie season was great statistically and choosing to ignore his 2nd and 3rd season in jacksonville being statistically imbalanced because of that 1st season.

RE:
Help me with me and what really matters when it comes to tackles.

You really want a mind-trip? The NFL doesn’t officially track tackles, only the accumulated tackles from their gamebooks.

However according to the coaches tape, the Bengals awarded him with 102 tackles.

baseball does a better job with stat tracking
ok so that means he got missed tackles every year

Assisted tackles don’t mean nothing so why bring them up. Solo tackles buddy is what I care about. And this isn’t his career year in anything but sacks by one and assisted tackles. If u wanna call that something special go ahead.

and Forced Fumbles, but continue living in your delusional world

Don’t let the facts stop you

Oh and Pass Defensed too...this past year's

12 were his career high. But again, don’t let the facts stand in your way….

RE:
Assisted tackles don’t mean nothing so why bring them up. Solo tackles buddy is what I care about.

I’ll make sure to let the NFL and the Cincinnati Bengals know that you don’t care about assisted tackles.

In the meantime make sure you boo the Bengals when Geno Atkins is holding someone up and Nelson flies from the safety position to complete the tackle. Because shit, you won’t care about that. Get out of here. Lol.

RE:

In 2 so called pro bowl years for bengals

You’re probably not accounting for the fact that Nelson didn’t even play on Cincinnati’s defense — played eight snaps in the first five games, mostly as a special teams player. He finally played significantly in the second half after the week 9 loss to Pittsburgh.

But that’s alright. Go ahead and disregard that little bit when accumulating your stats.

That was in 2010, BTW
the amazing thing

rarely do you see so many of us one side of an issue. so far pray is the only that appears to believe nelson’s play was just as good in jacksonville as it has been in cincy.

once again it evens itself out Josh

09 he got hurt and I’m pretty sure this year was his most snaps played. Morale of story is he ain’t been no better here than Jax. Same goes Crocker, Howard and Lawson all had on par years with there career avgs. And that’s facts

don quixote

all i can say..

RE:

What facts? You’ve disregarded coverages completely. Did you offer an analysis on how he did in coverage? Did you point out blown coverages, or better yet the times that excellent coverage forced a quarterback to go to another route?

And the whole point that passes targeted against guys he covered were 60 points higher w/ the Jaguars is, what, irrelevant? Or is that just another one of those stats that you don’t care for?

;-)

stop misleading people

If I really wanna be technical his having his worse years in bengals uniform. Pay two years he has 25 assisted tackles most ever had in Jax was 6. Yall do the math. And he had 6 int his rookie years. Yeah they called him bust because they got higher expectations than Yall.

YOU

Are the one misleading people…look up the stats at the NFL site and you will see that they are what I listed… YOU are the misleading one on here…

He also played CB in jax

if you didnt notice he plays FS here

ok im pretty sure he played corner here

Hell even proved my point about Coyle then. Why Crocker playing nickel when Nelson pretty much was better huh?

"And he had 6 int his rookie years"

STOP LYING! HE NEVER HAD 6 INT’s no matter how many rookie years you want to give him. He HAD 5 INT’s for 76 Yards…

dude ok i was off one

Ha ha ha I was wrong. Want a cookie? But please don’t bring assisted tackles to me a want credit for ff he didn’t our team didn’t recover. Do he also get a assist for dropping wide open int then our beat defensive player gets hurt 4 plays later on that drive?

RE:
Want a cookie?

Hell yes. Cookies rule!

Are you talking about Crocker or Nelson?
stop talking to me u dont even warch the games

Nelson duh? U just look up stats after games huh?

I don't watch games?

Are YOU KIDDING ME?!?!? I have been WATCHING games and FOLLOWING this team FAR LONGER that you have probably been alive you pathetic worm!

u couldnt if u didnt know play i was talking bout
I assume you are talking about Crocker's INT

against the Texans and Pacman being hurt and then getting beat by Andre Johnson. If you are talking about a different game, the season is 16 games long, plus 4 preseason games and 1 playoff game, so if you are not clear enough in the point you are trying to make, it is YOUR fault.

pemci

it’s not worth it. That’s all he as is “You don’t watch games” He spews garbage and nothing but. But he is referring to the interception that Nelson had against the Steelers that, and listen up here pray, LEON HALL KNOCKED OUT OF NELSON"S HANDS.

Ah, that one, yes. I had forgotten about that

INT….I thought the one by Crocker was 1000x worse than what happened with Nelson and Hall…

Anyway, Thank you Oregon, I see your point about Pray, people like them are quite frustrating…Thank you again….

That was odd, it put two messages up by me, but

excluded what I else I had written. Anyway, thank you. I thought the Crocker missed INT was 1000000X worse than what happened with Nelson/Hall….

Anyway, you are correct about Pray…Thank you Oregonbengalsfan… :)

You're a bad troll.

Kind of sad dude.

If reggie was that good

they wouldnt have traded him for david jones

RE:

The winner has it!

I am certain Pray will

twist it around and argue that point

and stay on topic

How was Nelson bust in Jax but a pro bowler here with basically same if not worse stats. Assisted tackles don’t count fellas. Sorry, don’t.let Josh fool Yall

"and stay on topic"

You should follow your OWN ADVISE and stay on one topic. As soon as someone points out a FACT to you, you quickly change the topic/subject…You are the one trying to fool people on here because you don’t like the facts you are being presented. Josh is just helping pointing out those FACTS that you FAIL to accept….

nfl trades always lopsided

And 9/10 they were gonna release him anyway, so why not get something back in value.

Thank you for proving my point....
+1

And where is David Jones now?

RE:

Cleaning the shitter at my day job.

rec'd and +10000000000
Good for him, nice to see one of our guys get a promo (as long as he's not named Zimmer or Gruden that is) :)
I would think if MB didn't let Coyle go

a second time, it would get harder for him to hire quality coaches. My god, Coyle has been with the Bengals for 11 years, certainly Brown had to let him go if another team promoted him.

Message to Coyle - Just don't take Reggie with you!

We need him please…

But if you want Crocker … He’s all yours.

We'll pay you to take Crocker...
Consider it a parting gift. :)
Take Nate Livings and Alexander too(O-line Coach)
After the Texans Game...

No body wants crocker.

Holy $#!+

I can be stubborn, I am a Taurus, but pray takes the cake!

Tell me about it... :)

Even with ALL the facts being presented two them, they still stubbornly continue on their way….

i sorta defended something he said to you a couple of days back

saying he was trying to share a complex thought with you when you called him chili. i’m seeing what you were getting at the other day via today..

May 4. I dont think im stubborn. Ha
what facts? u dont even watch games
what facts? u dont even watch games
be honest fellas

Would u rather have a player make 10 extra solo tackles or would u rather them u go jump on pile 15 extra times?

You tell us....

By your accusation, we don’t even watch the games….

i'm exhausted

nelson in jacksonville was superior to nelson in cincy. coyle blows and we’re better off without them both.

happy?

You forgot, we should also have 25+ new players on our roster next year...

am I missing anything else?

thats not nothing special dummy

Successful teams nowadays have to reload every year. Baltimore had 30+ new players this year. We have a lot of free agents that’s not coming back. And dumb brain if u was a real fan u should want 25+ new players. We have a lot if weak links

never said that

Just wanna know what’s so special about Nelson that was missing in Jax

They moved him from CB where he Struggled in coverage

To FS where he has done much better..

does he have room to improve YES…
but i cant remember a better FS here in a long time.

and Nelson was drafted and always considered safety

That’s like sayin Crocker could put cb on his resume. And Crocker has played a lot of nickle for us.

kaesviharn was pretty decent

Nelson is good though

kaesviharn was pretty decent

Nelson is good though

One word.

Coverage.

and you also forgot Zimmer can't coach either
You sir know nothing....

REggie Nelson did a great job at FS this year even commentators said hes having a pro bowl year.

quit talking what u dont know lame

I’ve never said was his year great, good or horrible. My argument was that Nelson has had on avg basically same number his whole career but one. So what makes him bust in Jax but pro bowl here? And they only argument was he has 15 more assisted tackles this year that makes his total tackles look good. But in Jax he had his career high in solo tackles and int.

Can SBNation spend the offseason working on an Ignore feature please?
+10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
never said that my friend

I said he wasn’t a great coach, to me he is a Lil overrated

You said, and I quote:

“Zimmer Sucks!”

he got you there pray
yeah i was coming off a losing week

After u lose to 3rd string qb twice don’t I have a valide argument?
