Bengals Bring Defensive Back Rico Murray To The Practice Squad

The Cincinnati Bengals signed former defensive back Rico Murray to the team's practice squad, replacing Devon Torrence who was released earlier this week. Murray initially signed as an undrafted free agent following the 2009 NFL Draft, waived on September 5 and signed to Cincinnati's practice squad on September 23, 2009. The Bengals promoted him to the 53-man roster on December 12, playing the final four games of the year including the 2009 Wild Card game against the New York Jets.

Star-divide

Murray returned to Cincinnati's practice squad to start the 2010 season, but quickly made the 53-man roster when defensive backs were falling with injuries. However he was waived on November 8, returned to the practice squad the next day and then promoted back to the 53-man roster on November 13. Eventually he was placed on Injured Reserve with an injured ankle in early December.

Murray made the 53-man roster in 2011, played against the Cleveland Brown during the regular season opener and then released soon after.

I am surprised they did not get Rico back

before signing Brandon Ghee to the team….

Is Ghee even still around

Ghee was an unfortunate bust but I am glad they re-signed Rico. I think he provides quality depth in the secondary, especially with Mays’ injuried hammy.

I saw Ghee holding for Nugent on the opening kickoff against the Ravens

He might just play special teams now.

Rico made a nice heads-up play in the last playoff game

Does anyone remember him returning a short punt? It bounced once and Quan wasn’t going to touch it, but then Rico swooped in and scooped it up and scampered for about a 20-yd return. It set up the first touchdown of the day.

wonder if rico will be on roster for texans game

and ghee released, resigned to practice squad

Replace Mays?

Mays was out last week with a hamstring injury. I wonder if Murray has been signed to take Mays roster spot if he can’t go?

That's my thought
Just a smart decision

I don’t think he was signed to replace anyone. In my opinion, the mgmt is planning on moving past Houston and picked up a guy who has familiarity with our system, the guys in our system, and the terminology used in our system. If we have an injury in Houston, we can pop him in for the NE game without having to train a guy that knows nothing about our defense. I think it is just a smart decision as an insurance policy.
