Open Thread: The Sugar Bowl Has A Sour Michigan Taste To It

Fart can be used as a noun or a verb. The immediate roots are in the Middle English words ferten, feortan or farten; which is akin to the Old High German word ferzan. Cognates are found in old Norse, Slavic and also Greek and Sanskrit. The word "fart" has been incorporated into the colloquial and technical speech of a number of occupations, including computing. - Wikipedia

The Cincinnati Bengals are in the playoffs, Michigan and Virginia Tech are taking on each other in the Sugar Bowl and everyone is gloriously sticking to their New Years resolutions. Talk about any of the subjects, or how Fox made a terrible mistake cancelling Firefly, your best television shows or how the kids listen to stupid music these days. Damn kids.

Go VT. I hate Mich. teams.

With that said, I feel good about Saturday’s game. TJ Yates is decent, but a major step back from Shaub. Shaub averaged 238 yds passing per game, and Yates is averaging barely 145 ypg. The offense is not good under Yates, and the past 3 losses show it.

RE:

Just remember that Yates threw for 300 yards against the Bengals — though like 117 yards in the fourth quarter.

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil

Stupid college kids!

+1,000,000

Talk about any of the subjects, or how Fox made a terrible mistake cancelling Firefly….. Best gorram show EVER!!!

whats firefly?
The Freakonomics guy was on NFL Network

And did a bunch of research that I didn’t pay much attention to, but in the end he said home field advantage makes very little difference.

On to Houston!

why was that not a touchdown?
He got Greshamed
at very least that should have been inconclusive and not overturned
Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj came on the radio and my gf’s daughter protested when I turned it off. She asked why I did that and I said I couldn’t stand that garbage. She asked why. I told her because it sounds like someone nagging at me at hyperspeed.

I hate Superbass.

And Nicki Minaj somehow does her best to just make me dislike her. But as much as this hurts to admit, she has talent. If she’d actually write some lyrics that have a scrap of sense or content, she’d probably be pretty good. Instead, she’s just obnoxious and writes about anything that comes to mind.

I am proud to say I have no idea who Nicki Minaj or Superbass is.

Are they regulars on the Disney Channel?

as much as i hate owning up to it

I actually own the pink Friday cd. And a lot of the songs she does just parts in are good.

Since I'm now 20 I can comment on kids listening to stupid music nowadays, right?

Rock is no longer the rock of old. Everything that’s not classical, blues, jazz, or rap, seems to fall under pop or rock nowadays and that really bothers me. There’s some stuff you can take and ultimately look at it and say “Yeah, that’s rock.” But it’s not the classic rock you grew up with. It’s not the stuff of the 60s, 70s, or 80s. It’s too produced, too mechanical, too synthesized nowadays and it ultimately sounds different. People have realized this, but now it just falls under the umbrella term “Alternative.” But not all alternative is made the same. You won’t find any new artists that really fit the “classic rock” sound either. Everybody wants to be different, but they’re all too busy being the same.

Pop is doing everything it can to die on me. Too often I hear a low-quality song on the radio that makes me hate pop more but then I just ignore the few decent songs that pop somehow manages.

I actually can appreciate rap. But I want good rap to have substance to it, as well as good technique and flow. Instead, it, like pop, is too samey, repeating similar trends or ideas or just doesn’t impress me.

Argh. I hate mainstream.

I am thinking (or at least hoping and praying)

that the more music goes digital the better the quality will get. The dumbing down of music was caused by radio. The big labels had a total monopoly on what got played. Now that people hear about new (and often indie) artists by word of mouth and you can (gasp!) choose the songs you want to hear, I think it’ll eventually get better and the labels will die out.

Of course, while I was typing this a Mariah Carey commercial for Jenny Craig came on, so I could be wrong…

I'm scared we're seeing more of the opposite with digital

With digital recording and sampling, many songs nowadays are sampled pieces of older songs and a lot of today’s singer’s are not very good, but are “auto-tuned” to sound better than they really are.

But there are still some good songs coming out now and then.

Agreed on auto-tune

Whoever invented it should be forced to listen to Britney Spears and Puff Daddy for all eternity

Whoops!

I realized as soon as I hit “post” that you meant “digital” as in listening to music from the internet!

Duh. Me so stoopid.

lol dumbing down of music

I couldn’t agree with you more! It is hard to find artist that have meaningful lyrics. Mainly because mainstream stars have someone writing their music. Pre-teens and teenagers are the driving force on who becomes famous nowadays in the music industry….

You think JUSTICE BEAVER would have been as famous as he is 10,15,25 years ago???

Yes actually

See: David Cassidy, NKOTB, Back Street Boys, nSync, etc. Unfortunately, now they ONLY cater to the teeny boppers instead of them being a small segment of the music market.

I don't think he would have, i think with all those examples you mentioned got famous by dumb luck at the right time

basically society evolves ever so many years and each generation finds something different appealing. Justin Bieber is hit now, but I doubt ten years ago, anyone would have gave him a second thought. And by the way things are going, music is being dumb downed and quality artist are being squeezed out of the industry.

and Bieber didn’t?
The situation has seriously always been the same. The difference is, the Cassidy’s, NKOTB’s etc didn’t have the kind of marketing power to keep them going like they do today.

American Idol, many years ago, was the Gong Show…the concepts remain the same. The marketing changes

Also..ten years ago there was Aaron Carter…same thing…minus the internet.

lol you got me their but Aaron carter wasn't anything like Bieber is today

My point was, Justin Bieber can be big time hit with generation of young teenagers but 10 years ago, young teenagers were more into boy bands… So i don’t think he would be any where close where he is today…

basically its all about timing and as time goes on

it seems like the stars each new generation are becoming more dumb down…

True..it goes in cycles..All I’m saying is, there has always been dumb music (look in to some “pop” during the disco era, for instance)
Things go in cycles. Biebers fame is bloated by the fact that his marketing team has hit people on all fronts, and a few of those fronts weren’t even available ten years ago..

The current pop is a little dumber, but at the same time, the “boss’s” have it down to a science. They created what the most people want. But I think it’s always been basically the same, and the concept is the same as most things in life. If you want the good stuff, you’re gonna have to find it. If you are ok with whatever the feed you, that’s what you get..

+1

nicely said!

Dumb pop

Dave Barry did a nice little article on dumb songs. Quite a few stinkers from the 50’s and 60’s if I recall. :)

What kills it for me is when a new band makes it big, suddenly we’re flooded with dozens of other bands that sound very similar. And next thing you know, I’m sick of the whole genre. You can blame that problem on corporate radio.

As a result I find a lot of times I enjoy listening to local college stations for unusual and unknown music as well as programs like “Little Steven’s Underground Garage”.

right

everthing is big business now… its hard for any up and coming artist to get known because it cost a lot of money for a production of a simple mix tape. The cost of materials isn’t so bad but to get everything copy written, to be in a group organization, and to promote you songs makes virtually impossible to support yourself and your music at the same time.

"digital"

I think that’s what emeybee was referring to, many posts above. Thanks to computers, a lot of up and coming artists can record and edit their own music, post it on youtube, facebook, whatever, and it can go “viral”.

Like this glorious gem… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMtZfW2z9dw

Just because its "digital" doesn't mean its easier to promote and secure your music

I think to really become a serious artist, you need to make sure you music can’t be copied by other artist. And the only way to do that is by copy writes and trade marks. And if you make a lot of music, with no income from music, it becomes harder and harder to compete with other artist who are signed by a label.

that the more music goes digital the better the quality will get.

Google “the loudness war” and see why that statement is incorrect.

for the most part I stick with what people tend to hate the most

I usually do the metal, not the crap scremo stuff though. Hatebreed, Mushroomhead, Throwdown, that’s the good stuff.

But..if you only listen to stuff you think others hate…are you really allowing yourself to enjoy all that you possibly could?

What cracks me up

I played the Ramones for my kids a while ago. My 11 year old daughter LOVED it. I even let her wear my Ramones t-shirt to school now and then.

Father of the year, you betcha!

Vinyl Rules

I was trying to set up my old 5 disc surround sound up in the garage/man cave to have better music than the iTouch joke version of a stereo that is in there now. I soon realized why I got a new system for the house, but the speakers were OK and I realized I have my old stereo system out in the pile somewhere.

Pretty soon I had the old Sanyo set up with the Panasonic 25 CD changer and even better the record player!.

About 2 years ago I was at my dad’s place helping him out and tossing his garbage in the dumpster and to my surprise it was FILLED with albums! Well, turns out a used record store went belly up and the crazed owner trashed everything he had in the store. I filled up the back of my car and was out of there. out of about 600 records I culled about 200 great ones, and was for the first time enjoying some of my found treasure.

Hey kids, listen to CSNY’s Deja Vu ALBUM. Or Muddy Water’s Rare and Unissued. Or Blood Sweat and Tears! I spent last Saturday in the garage chillin to some great tunes. Long Live Vinyl.

Considering FireFly was only on for 1 season

and was voted by scifi fans as the best Space Series Ever…..

Beating StarTrek / StarGate and the rest of the rabble is simply amazing

I understand this happened when fox was changing exec’s every other month but comeon. and now with reality TV good shows dont get a chance to build up. Sara Conner Cronicals just getting good and canceld…. StarGate Universe best stargate ever cancelled because they choose to develope a deep story instead of just cheesy missions.

Boycott reality(fake) tv and maybe the good shows will get a chance again

is this on net flix?
Firefly is rerun constantly on some channel-- I always see the ads

Science channel I think. It seems like they have a marathon once a week.

for some reason i don't think i have that channel on directv

but im going to have to check it out…

I was really into “lost” and I can’t seem to find another show that is as good as it.

Its on Hulu

and there is also this lovely gem of a site watchseries eu

RE:

That’s so true. These shows are judged by the 10th episode and if they’re not drawing ratings, they’re on the chopping block. What makes matters worse is that networks run a show for eight episodes then take a 2-3 month break, out of sight out of mind. And then when they do return, the audience has already moved because the show hasn’t developed well enough yet.

Even though it was kinda cheesy

I was still upset they canceled Legend of the Seeker. I’ve read that whole series. Now they better NOT cancel Game of Thrones!!!
