According to Jim Hannah of nky.com, Bengals wide receiver Jerome Simpson entered a plea of not guilty to trafficking charges Monday.
Simpson's legal troubles stem from a September 19th raid by narcotic units of his Kentucky residence. Initial reports claimed that a package of 2.5 pounds of marijuana was found along with over 6 more pounds of marijuana and other contraband, however, recent reports have said that the amount of marijuana found was in fact just under 3 pounds. Simpson did not start the following game but he did play in all 16 games this season. He is set to become a free agent on March 13 and as one of the team's most inconsistent players, it's unclear as to whether or not the Bengals will re-sign him.
If found guilty of felony trafficking charges, that decision is made for them as Simpson would face a punishment of one to five years in prison. Simpson has until Tuesday to post bond, but will likely remain free until his next hearing on February 20th.

Looks like he's got something going on in his lap

Thats what I was thinking
lol

I believe him yo,
I don’t know why, but I do
EarthwormJim - January 30, 2012
it wouldn't be worth his time or money to try to sell that much and make a profit
he makes that much in a week from his base salary. I think he just bought a lot for him and his friends to smoke. Prolly split it up between other players too.
AMAS85 - January 30, 2012
He's no Plaxico.
And I’m not even sure I want him back even if he’s not guilty. I would not be upset if he is, but Caldwell should be gone either way. We need to have a better #2 WR to compliment Green, Gresham and Shipley. And Simpson didn’t show us he is that guy. But, I like him at the #4 slot.
UpStateMike - January 30, 2012
Rome!
He was framed!! That sh"" was planted.
txbengal29 - January 30, 2012
Trafficking?
I’m guessing it’s because he received the pot by mail? My understanding is that trafficking means they caught you selling it. Intent to distribute is what I was thinking they would’ve gotten him for. Since it turned out to be a smaller amount than first reported he needs to just admit it was for personal use and plead it down to possession. With a good lawyer he could probably pull a weekend in jail with a bunch of community service and be done with it. Regardless, Goodell will hand down a nice suspension so we’ll need a #2 to start the season if they do resign him. If he’s dumb enough to try postal pot maybe we should just stay away from him completely.

I imagine
he has a well compensated lawyer. Don’t know the strategy, but I would like to guess he is getting good/decent legal advice.
txbengal29 - January 30, 2012
He did have Pot mailed to him
That alone is a Felony
keithp - January 31, 2012
Under Kentucky law, if one is found to be in possession at or above a certain threshold amount, then Trafficking is presumed.
It is a rebuttable presumption, and ultimately a question of fact that is decided at trial. The law in Kentucky essentially says that if you possess a certain amount, we’re going to presume you were trafficking. The State still has to prove every element of its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

all i got to say, if Casey Anthony can get way with murder, I think Simpson may have a case here. I doubt it would be worth his time to try to make a profit for the mount he had on him
now Sam Hurd on the other hand, is a drug dealer for sure. he wanted 100 plus pounds a WEEK. Thats insane lol
AMAS85 - January 30, 2012
7 ounces makes it a felony I think.
Bigcatdaddy - January 30, 2012 via Android app
He's done in Cincy, at least with his NFL career.
Assuming he gets off lightly by the law, I doubt the Bengals or the NFL will be light in their punishment. For the Bengals he has shown when he had his shot at being “the guy”, he was too busy with pot. They will cut him and whoever signs him won’t have him for awhile once the season starts.
BENGALS69 - January 30, 2012
Agree, he's gone.
sofakingood - January 30, 2012
i think your being slightly un-reasonable. Why would we keep him on the roster if we knew we was just going to cut him anyways?
IF he wasn’t producing at all, why keep him? obviously, the bengals still see something in him, or they would have went a different direction a long time ago.
AMAS85 - January 30, 2012
Agree
Oregonbengalsfan - January 30, 2012
Were talking about Marvin here
The man hasnt had a firm stance on anything but a practice facility
keithp - January 31, 2012
Even if convicted, he is a first time offender for the League
So he would likely be in line for no more than a four game suspension. Remember, The Rapist originally got only 6 games for essentially raping an inebriated college coed. And even then, it was reduced to only four games.
Aldon Smith (who also faces a likely 4 game suspension), posed 1000% more danger to the general public for his actions this weekend in South Beach than Jerome ever did in this instance for which he is being prosecuted.
Also, Jerome is an UFA, so the Bengals wouldn’t have to “cut him”.
The_Black_Stripes - January 30, 2012 via mobile
the could have cut him during the season when found out... it was like the 4th game or so, so they had plenty of time to change it up at WR
AMAS85 - January 30, 2012
lol ok i see what you were replying to now sorry about that
AMAS85 - January 30, 2012
2012: Free Agent
he can’t be cut. he’s not currently a bengal.
palewook - January 30, 2012
Haha - I agree about Sam Hurd
We’ll see about Jerome. By all accounts, he has no prior criminal history, so that does work in his favor even if he were to be found guilty. We’ll see.
The_Black_Stripes - January 30, 2012 via mobile
lol i try to keep it in and not say too much but I can't help my self sometimes
i think people can be a little closed minded at times and see the bigger picture here. I think Jerome is a good kid. Just got caught in the wrong mess and he obviously isn’t the only NFL player to smoke, he is just the one that got caught.
And there still is a small chance, he had no idea what was going on.
AMAS85 - January 30, 2012
agree
Diesel2405 - January 30, 2012
see below lol if you want to know what im talking about
AMAS85 - January 30, 2012
Not Guilty !!!
Uhhhh, good luck with that Jerome. If acquitted, please do another flip as you leave the courtroom.
laibach - January 30, 2012
C'mon AMA
The guy has had three years to learn his craft, got a starting role opposite Green, finnished in the lower third of NFL WR’s, has alligator arms and hands at times, runs the wrong routes and gets snagged for pot possession and trafficing. So you’re the owner “what do you do for the good of the New Bengals?”
Besides if he lived in that house or only visited on ocassion don’t you think he smelled the herb? I don’t buy the idea that he had no idea what was going on. I also feel NFL players are constantly reminded of the consequences for bad and illegal behaviour, especially the Bengals. Any player with any sense doesn’t put themselves in those positions. Unless they’re just dumb.
sofakingood - January 30, 2012
Don't get me wrong, I wished he would have been smarter about who kept around or how he went about smoking...
But when talking about his performance, he has done a pretty good job on the field if you think about it. Take his first 3 starts and plus his first 13 starts of this year, he has close to a 1,000 yrds receiving. Simpson simply didn’t get the same looks as AJ this year.
Any number two WR that comes in drafted or signed from FA will face the same problem. ANd thats getting and to check to other side or look away from Green. I can’t blame Andy for keeping his eyes on Green or just throwing it up to him because AJ always goes up and gets it. AJ will make most WR look worse than what they are if you compare them side by side.
I don’t beleive he runs the wrong route or lines up wrong more than any other WR we have on the team. We are very young at the skilled positions on offense, there is going to be miscomunication. And Simpson probably was the best blocker we had this year, no doubt in my mind about that one. Simpson was by far the most physical WR we had this year. I think you give him a 1yr deal to prove him self. If he doesn’t fit here fine, we will move on. But is not that bad as some people make him out to be.
Weed is a health issue not a criminal issue. It souldn’t be criminal by any means. I think our society will correct that in a few years, but I try not to judge any one I don’t know personally or assume anything with out knowing all the facts. But to each their own.
AMAS85 - January 30, 2012
I respect your opinion. I just sense the New Bengals moving away from unprofessional behaviour. I wonder what will happen to A.Jones.
sofakingood - January 30, 2012
its all good, I understand that people want to move away from "troubled" players
but I still believe in Jerome and know there is still a lot of upside with him. I just think some of these things are being blown out of proportion.
AMAS85 - January 30, 2012
since he's on godell's short list of players that can be suspended for behavior while not an employee of the nfl
(cba gave up 8 players, jones was one of them)
figure he’ll be suspended with the caveat, if he signs with another team the suspension of X amount will have to be served. figure brown will resign since that alone will keep his price at vet min and all other teams clear of jones.

I feel ya man, keep up the good fight!
I think once people under stand the bigger picture, i don’t they will get caught up in the hype of things.
Surprisingly, ESPN or CBS Sports etc…. haven’t made it the big deal, like people on this site have made it out to be.
To each their own, and never give up your “bill of rights” people. THINK!
AMAS85 - January 30, 2012
Hahaha - I agree
We can all discuss Jerome’s shortcomings as a receiver, but he’s NOT automatically “a bad person” or “has character issues” because of this instance. We’ll see what happens.
The_Black_Stripes - January 30, 2012
+1
weed…I just dont think this makes him a bad guy either….IT SHOULD BE LEGAL ANYWAY…..jus sayin
