Commentary: Chad Ochocinco a Champion?

Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson is one of the most enigmatic players in the history of the Cincinnati Bengals. With a Patriots win in the Super Bowl this Sunday, Ochocinco can cement his name with the select group in the NFL that have the title of "World Champion".

In his ten years in Cincinnati, Chad truly did it all. He had back-to-back AFC receiving crowns, was a six-time Pro Bowl selection, a three-time All-Pro selection and had the best touchdown celebrations that any of us had ever seen. He made us laugh, he made us awe-struck with his acrobatic catches and he made us frustrated with disappearances in huge games. Chad was a polarizing entertainer on and off of the football field and no matter how you felt about him, he and Carson Palmer put up some of the most exciting highlights in the history of the franchise.

Sometime during and after the 2007 season, it all went downhill though. After a disappointing 7-9 finish that season, Johnson wanted out of Cincinnati. Not so coincidentally, this is when Chad began to create the character of "Ochocinco".

Star-divide

Going into the 2008 season, Chad went to every media outlet that he could access and publicly stated that he wanted to be traded. Owner Mike Brown stood steadfast, opting not to trade him after Ochocinco had just inked a lucrative contract a couple of years back, even declining a huge trade offer from the Washington Redskins (a lesson that Brown thankfully learned later with Palmer's trade situation). Chad didn't show up until Training Camp that year, but he finally bit the bullet and honored his contract. The 2008 season was a 4-11-1 debacle, thanks in large part to Chad's trade demand and subsequent lack of on-field effort, as well as a devastating injury to quarterback Carson Palmer.

Chad rededicated himself to football the following season, got himself into shape and fans got to see a part of "the old Chad" again in 2009. He relished the spotlight that came with HBO's "Hard Knocks" and was a main figure on that mini-series. It ended up being an exciting, albeit ultimately disappointing, year for Cincinnati as the Bengals made the playoffs and lost in the first round. Chad's hard work that offseason paid off though, as he made the Pro Bowl that year.

In the offseason leading up to the 2010 campaign, the Bengals were in the market for another wide receiver opposite Ochocinco. Expectations were high for the Bengals that year, as they retained most of their key players and were coming off of a playoff appearance. Chad lobbied hard for his friend, Terrell Owens, to come to Cincinnati and play opposite him. He got his wish and "Batman and Robin" were brought together in Cincinnati (after an embarrassment with free agent acquisition, Antonio Bryant). The experiment blew up in management's face and resulted in an atom bomb of a 4-12 season, including a ten-game losing streak.

Chad was frequently pouting on the field and the sidelines that year. So much so that in one instance, Andrew Whitworth was seen shoving Ochocinco into position on Monday Night Football against the Steelers, after Chad was sulking around and not hustling while Palmer was engineering the "hurry-up offense". It was ugly, but Ironically, some of the best offensive football that the team played was at the end of the season when "T.Ochocinco" weren't in the lineup.

Leading up to 2011, the Bengals were clearly moving in a different direction. Though they kept their head coach of the past eight seasons, the quarterback wanted out of the franchise and the longtime offensive coordinator was replaced. The writing was on the wall for Ochocinco and he knew it. He attempted to bully his way out of Cincinnati by challenging Marvin Lewis to cage fights and professing his love for Patriots coach Bill Belichick. He got his wish one last time and was traded to New England (for much less than what the team was offered in 2008).

Meanwhile, the Bengals went in a different direction, replacing Chad with the antithesis to his abilities and personality, A.J. Green. The very young Bengals team surprised everyone and made the playoffs in 2011--their first season without Chad (and Palmer). It was an impressive feat, given the offseason cards that the team had been dealt.

Chad has been consumed by "The Patriot Way" this season, being very quiet with the media and hasn't been the same character he was in Cincinnati for a decade. He also wasn't the same player on the field in 2011, amassing only 15 catches, 276 yards and one touchdown. Not quite the numbers many expected him to put up with one of the all-time great quarterbacks feeding him the ball. It's been surmised that Ocho couldn't grasp their complicated playbook and couldn't work himself on the field for more opportunities. It seems he fell the way of other disgruntled Bengals cast-offs like Carl Pickens, and not that of Johnathan Joseph or Corey Dillon. Though, like Dillon, he has an opportunity to become a world champion with the Patriots.

I'm torn about how I feel about Chad winning a championship. The inner-Bengals fan in me feels slighted by what Chad did to this franchise and the fans in the last four years in Cincinnati. It's odd how we view Palmer as "the quitter" when Chad had quit on this franchise for the better part of four years. Many times he made his own personal statistics and his self-promotion off of the field a bigger priority than the team's success. He publicly called out his quarterback on the field when he didn't get the ball, had a major halftime meltdown in the team's most important game in fifteen years and became more of a problem than he was worth at times. He always made the ridiculous sideline catches, but rarely seemed to make the routine ones across the middle where a true NFL wide receiver makes his hay. I remember getting frequently angry at what I saw from Chad on television.

But then I remember the early years. How he "wanted to be better than Rice", as he told Marvin Lewis. I remember meeting him in the street of downtown Cincinnati during my first trip to the Queen City and how he gave me a "five hug" after I called out his name and shook his hand. I remember the frequent times on Twitter that he'd tell groups of Cincinnatians to meet him at a restaurant to dine with him and that he would pick up the tab--and he delivered on that promise. I remember him predicting victories against teams and the defensive back checklist he hung in his locker. Most of all, I remember Chad Johnson making the Bengals relevant again in the 2003 season, to where they are today.

Chad hasn't done much this season to deserve a championship, statistically speaking. He wasn't even active for the AFC Championship game, though to be fair that was more of a result of him missing time with the team because of the passing of his father. Part of me wants to wish Chad luck and see him smile with tears in his eyes as the confetti rains down on him in Indianapolis. Part of me is still enraged at him that he didn't do more to help Cincinnati reach the platform that New England currently stands on. If he wins a ring, it will be culmination of his eleven years of NFL service and hard work. It's unfortunate the opportunity won't be with the Bengals, as I truly believe he wanted to win here and that was the root of a lot of his antics. The ironic thing is for how badly he wanted out of Cincinnati over the past decade, Chad will always be remembered as a Bengal with his gold teeth shining through his orange and black-striped helmet.

Good luck on Sunday, Chad. I won't be rooting for you.

No.....

I want Chad Johnson to… Not hate everyone… Just wish it had happened while he was here and he could have stayed here to win the SB!!

I'm a Giants fan by default

And I truly dislike the Patriots (and their fans), but if the Pats win the one consolation I’ll take from it is that Chad finally gets a ring. I never had anything but love for Chad. I recognized when his time was up here and when he wasn’t going to be able to contribute to a complete overhaul of the team, but I’ve always been a Chad fan. I also know how much it means to him personally to win a championship. More than the money and the fame. Good luck, Ocho. Still hope the Giants beat you, though.

I agree completely

Chad was great and I am still a big fan, and I want him to get a ring, but I have ties to the Giants. My best friend is a born and raised New Yorker who somehow ended up out here in Kansas so I always root for his Giants when they’re not up against the Bengals.

I do hope he gets a ring, but even more than that I hope he earns a ring. Whether he’s in New England next year or elsewhere, I want to see him scoring touchdowns and continuing to be the fun, good guy he’s been all along.

I used to hate when people lumped him in with cancers like TO. Chad never said anything bad about his teammates and rarely even said anything rude to his opponents, just playful cockiness. He was a very fun player to watch who got a really bad rap just because he’s fun, funny, and talkative.

My biggest regret for Chad is that he never had a coach in the NFL who really believed in him until he got to New England, and by then he was pretty much ruined. Marvin obviously wanted nothing to do with Chad from day 1. Remember in Hard Knocks the clips of Chad begging Marvin to help him become (spoken in very reverent tones) “like Rice”. Instead of helping him, Marvin just laughed and wouldn’t even look Chad in the face. Marvin always treated Chad like the annoying kid next door that won’t stay off your lawn, but you’re not allowed to do anything about it.

I will add this:

Chad Johnson was 1000x better than Chad Ochocinco….

I don't understand people voting NO in the poll

Unless it is strictly that you don’t want the Patriots to win the Super Bowl. That’s my biggest thing in this whole conversation – I don’t think Bengals fans should have any negative feelings about Chad. I don’t think he ever HURT this franchise. He gave his best years as a player and he REALLY wanted to win here. If he hadn’t been traded, I think he would have come out and played his tail off with Andy and AJ this season. When all the dust settles on his career and the reality shows are a memory and all of that, I think bengals fans will ultimately remember what a special player he was for this franchise. The starts just didn’t align while he was here. Carson’s knee doesn’t get shredded in ‘05 and I’d bet money he already has that ring and maybe another one.

+100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
It's just people being babies
I voted no cause like i said in my post....I wish it was here not there...

Sorry that my jealousy gets in the way of Ocho getting a ring. As for being babies….I thought in America I had the right to an opinion? I have nothing wrong with 85’s work ethics now he’s not on my team, as for when he was I had issues with him after ‘06. He stopped being the best player he could be and became an enigmatic Wr. I agree with Eric NYC if Palmers knee never got shredded we could of been hoisting up the Lombardi two maybe even three times since ’05, but that did happen and 85 did drop off after ’08 and god what it would have been if 85 stayed 85 joining Dalton and AJ and Gresh and Ship, I salivate at the what if’s…..but I live in the now, and in this league its a show me league…..

So Ocho show me in the SB why you deserve to be there and prove that you deserve to be in the HOF, Cause there are a lot of players that should be in that might have had the same kind of impact that 85 had but are still not in because they never get to lift the Lombardi.

On another note would we have drafted AJ if Ocho was still in the fold? That’s debatable.

2008 when he wanted out and didnt practice or train all offseason

and basically any year after changing his name he hurt more than helped.

that being said.. im torn. I hate the patriots but chad having a ring that he couldnt brag about cause he really did nothing on the way to earn it would be priceless………..

If chad had been a factor for NE like dillion was then Yes i would love him to have a ring but if he gets it this year theres just no way he could brag about it. imo

I'll give you that 2008 offseason was bad form...

To be fair, though, it was the only time he acted like that and he seemed legitimately sorry about it afterwards. I know a lot of people are still bitter about that. That’s fair…I just think he did enough positive things here to make up for it. And I think his declining production after that was more a product of him just physically aging, not a lack of commitment. Seems kind of petty to have bad feelings towards a guy for getting older and not being able to play like he did in his prime. Like Anthony said, if he wins a ring this year, I think he’ll look at it (and everyone else should look at it) as a testament to his body of work as a professional football player, which for all the antics was very impressive – and 99% in a Bengals uniform. He’s the first Bengal since Boomer and Munoz you could possibly make a HOF case for (I’m intentionally leaving Dillon out of that because seriously f**k Corey Dillon).

I’m intentionally leaving Dillon out of that because seriously f**k Corey Dillon

Corey Dillon was to Cincy what Chad Johnson/Ochocinco became to Cincy…

But beside the point you chide Bengalsfan024 for not having enthusiastic feelings toward Chad, but then you show yourself that you stil have bitter feelings towards Corey Dillon who left before Chad became the Bengals superstar…. just saying, no ill feelings meant…

Corey Dillon left Cincinnati in a much more adversarial way than Chad did

And Chad had a lot more sustained success here than Dillon ever did. Also, I’m not “chiding” anyone. Especially not Bengalsfan024.

RE:

Ocho/Johnson had six Pro Bowls (one as an alternate) in ten seasons in Cincinnati.
Dillon had three Pro Bowls in seven seasons in Cincinnati.

Relatively comparable, I’d say. Keep in mind that Dillon was on a team that was named the worst team of any decade, in any sport, ever. He had to deal with Scott Mitchell, Scott Covington, Paul Justin, Gus Frerotte and Akili Smith as quarterbacks before Jon Kitna brought any sanity to the position.

I do agree with you that Chad and Dillon had much different personalities. I think that’s why Chad’s last four years here stung Bengals fans so much—because he was so well liked as a person as well as a player for the 5-6 years he spent here. Dillon, while an exciting player, was never well-liked as a person.

True, Dillon was not as well liked as Chad...

but Dillon busted his ass for this team just the same….

RE:

I didn’t say that Dillon didn’t. But, they weren’t successful with Dillon and he wasn’t a likeable guy. When he bashed the franchise and wanted out people were angry but not sad.

They were successful with Ocho and he was likeable. When he wanted out, people were mad AND sad. Hence the burning of Ocho’s jerseys, etc, that we didn’t see with Dillon and Palmer.

I never said that you did.. :)

I was just trying to make a point about Dillon. No offense met. As you said, he was on a team named one of the worst teams in any decade in any sport and he succeeded. Some people still hate Dillon, and I did too at one time, but I have come to peace with it. Yes, he wasn’t well liked, but in the dark days of this organization he was a light in the dark…

Dillion did it

when there really was nothing else going on for cincinnati.

he literally carred us on his back for 2 seasons. (2 horrible seasons)

but my point about dillion was He was a very big part of their superbowl run where as Chad if he gets a ring this year, had basically nothing to do with it.

That being said if chad wins a ring while he sat on the bench making 6 mil and healthy. could he ever brag about it? i mean i understand hes on the right team right time but for someone with as good a career he has had how could he want a ring that he was basically a spectator for?

Can you imagine what Dillon's numbers would have been

like if he had Chad/Carson/TJ on the field at the same time…

Who Could Blame Dillon.

Who wants to play for a loser? Dillon said see you later you bunch of losers. Chris Berman called the Bengals the “Bungles”. Even the Fans agree. Who wants to Polite as per say! What is the person of Dillon? Did his Agent command change? Did Dillon beat Mike Brown? Dillon and Agent got the result! Mike Brown lost that one! Dillon and Agent won the Day!

Lexington, Virginia... caller, you're on the air

What’s your point, caller?

We are going to agree to disagree...

For six seasons, Dillon was one of the few bright spots on an otherwise horrible Bengals team. After a 2001 game Dillon said "we will never win with the Brown family in Cincinnati." From 1997 to 2002 he rushed for over 1000 yards each year, and made the Pro Bowl 3 times (1999–2001). On October 22, 2000, Dillon set an NFL record for most yards rushed in one game (278 yards) against the Denver Broncos, breaking Walter Payton’s single-game mark of 275 yards set on November 20, 1977.

Also, Unlike Chad, Corey did not have anyone else on those teams. It was him against the other teams…I can not agree with your comment “And Chad had a lot more sustained success here than Dillon ever did”.

Chad was surrounded by more talent, for sure.

I loved watching Dillon run, just like I loved watching Chad catch TD’s. Dillon was a jerk when he left, unlike Chad, but I can’t say I blame the guy all that much. He could have shown a little more apprecation towards the fans, but he was surrounded by some god-awful teams and I am sure the frustration just boiled over.

Chad tried to be a jerk to get out

it didnt work… Dillion got out as marvin was coming in.

I’m only rooting for the Patriots if Chad is CONTRIBUTING to said win. If he’s making plays and making a difference, sure: let him have his ring. Otherwise, I could care less who wins. I don’t really care that Chad gets a ring for warming the bench for a season.

This is how I feel.

Whenever he has been on the field, I want to see him do well, but it really hasn’t happened. Not too excited for this SB, and it doesn’t matter either way to me if he gets a ring. If he does, good for him, if not, life goes on, lots of guys never win one. I like him, at times he made me wanna wring his neck, lol, but all in all, he was great for Cincinnati.

I Thought 85 Would Have A Great Season

Boy was i wrong. Now i wiping egg off my face. I got it all wrong. Foot in mouth is me.
The only way 85 can save face if Gronkawski goes down. 85 will get targets.
Who knows how this will go down. Maybe 85 makes a last minute TD.
I doubt it. Gronk is out of his boot.
Gronks father says Gronk has a high ankle sprain.
Will 85 become a factor? Probably not. Still i would be surprised if 85 is not part of the gameplan!
Anything can happen. Good luck 85. Grap a Ring!

I thought so, too

I’m REALLY surprised by how much his play declined these past two years. He fell off a cliff a lot faster than I thought he would – I really thought having Brady throwing the ball to him and their other threats to open up defenses would at least get him back in the 750+ yards category and that if nothing else he would be one of the top outside threats on that team. This is probably going to be the last football game he ever plays.

holy shnikeys, this one made sense.
I'm starting to think Chili is Yoda
Foot in mouth is me.
Is he even going to be active for the game?

Now that is a prop bet I would like to see in Vegas.

Why wouldnt he be active??

The only game he was inactive for this season ( I Believe) was the game where his Father had died. Can’t make plays if they don’t throw you the ball or give you snaps

No, he was inactive at least one other game as well....
because he cant contribute to the team

and brady doesnt trust him enough to throw to him

I DO

I definitely want him to get a ring. He deserved it while he was here. He played as well as he possibly could. He also brought attention that we rarely get in cincinnatti( whether you believe it or not most of the attention was good.) He also often bought the remaining tickets to the games so fans that werent there could still watch on TV.

Dude deserves it and i hope he gets it.

Seeing as he cant run routes in new england

i am really starting to wonder how much of palmers problems were chad running the wrong way.

He hasnt had a chance.

He hasnt really had a chance in NE.

His route running was just fine in cincy. Plus look at how many interceptions palmer has had this year, without chad. MANY more.

exactly

People on here loved to blame Chad’s route running for Palmer’s problems. Those who actually know and those who had to defend him praise his route running.

I know he has the best footwork in the game..

but i also know he constantly ran the wrong routes during his time in cincy.

Chad Deserves a Ring? Really???

Chad deserves a ring? I guess evey player in NFL that shows up for practice every day deserves a ring. The thing about the SB is that the only people who deserve it are those who do what it takes to win it. No doubt Chad possessed amazing talent and he used it in the early years of his career to make a lot of amazing plays but here is breakdown: 1) he was a selfish player; 2) he was an unwilling run blocker; 3) he screwed up routes routinely; 4) he jumped offsides a lot for a WR; 5) he simply did not have the character needed to use his talent to be truly great. If he gets a ring he will still not be a “champion”. Just like the ring given to Jeremy Shockey when he was with the Saints.

Chad's from my High School (Miami Beach Senior High)

and he was and continues to be a very fun loving and playful character.

To know (really know) Chad, is to love him. He doesn’t have a mean bone in his body.

I feel like in N.E. he’s been stripped of his “Mojo” (personality).

It’s sad to see that he’s on the same team with arguably the best QB to ever
play the game and now about to play the Biggest game of his career (Superbowl)
and as “bengalsfan024” states………He’s been a complete Non-Factor
(15 catches for 275 yds).

I bet he feels worse than anyone in the world right now, knowing that he wasn’t a factor in helping the Pat’s get there.

and knowing him like I do……………….Believe me, He’s embarrassed to no end that he didn’t contribute.

I hope “Belichick” makes Chad his secret weapon in the Superbowl

I’d love to see Chad catch 8 passes with 2 going for Touchdowns.

The Guy’s a great guy and we should all be rooting for him to not only get in the game
but to be a difference maker once he’s in.

He really does deserve it (body of work).

Isn’t it Ironic……….. (Alanis Morrisette).

If he gets in, I want him to do well.

His play (or lack thereof) has frustrated me this season.

Im With You, Life has a funny way

Chad was be our #1 #1. Blonde.

I wouldn't exactly say I'm torn...

I’m rooting for the guy to get his ring (also I’m getting pretty annoyed with the rash of Giants bandwagoners I know who have popped up), but I hope the way he’s getting his ring gets him to reflect on the value of being a loved and utilized part of a team, the way he was for the Bengals. One thing I find odd is his lack of any communication about his old team during an extraordinarily unexpected season for them (I think the one tweet I saw from him was about Jerome’s flip-TD). I wonder if he just doesn’t wanna say anything inflammatory, or piss off Belichick, or if he really was hoping the team would tank when he left. Who knows. So while I still like the guy, I hope he also remembers his Bengals years with fondness for the opportunities he was given.

want the AFC to win the superbowl

just not tom brady or the patriots.

so this year im routing for the gaints.

If it happens - Great for Chad

Chad “Johnson” was arguably the best player the Bengals ever had. Not so much the “Ochocinco” version. He gave it his all for most of his career in Cincy and I wish him the best. All lot of people forget the string of amazing seasons he gave us before this alter-ego took over.

Chad Johnson was the man

The Ocho can go to hell and play catch with Palmer for all eternity. CJ gave me some of my best Bengals memories and Ocho just embarrassed me. I want to wish him luck and pull for him but I am torn and am admitting it. BIG QUESTION? Personally I think that Chad signs the one day contract like all the rest and retires a Bengal. Now if he gets that ring does anybody think that he would still do that or just retire as a Patriot? That’s when we’ll find out what Chad thinks about the Bengals and the fans. If I’m not mistaken Dillion retired as a Bengal.

I would hate for the Pats to win

but the silver lining would be Chad getting a ring. I just wish it would have been during a season he had more of an impact on. We owe him a lot of respect for most of the years he was in Cincy. It’s just a shame that the last couple have clouded it for some people.

He's not a Bengal anymore...

Why would we care about Chad getting a ring or not? He’s no longer a Bengal, and since the Bengals aren’t in the Super Bowl, I don’t care. Every athlete has his goals, Chad’s was to be with what he believes is a better team for years. He got onto the Pats, now in the Super Bowl – again. He is in position to achieve one of his goals. However, he may be achieving that as an under achiever for the team. He does this with the harsh realization that his prime is in the past and he, hinself, did not have an impact. How empty of a victory, should they win.

I always liked Chad

He was entertaining. He was great with kids and fans in general. And by most accounts, he was the hardest working player when he was here.

I wish him nothing but the best.

To me it's almost an afterthought..........

if he wins one, fine……if not, fine too. Had he done more to get there I think I wold’ve felt differently, but he did nothing to contribute (15 catches I think, 1 TD). Almost like the movie “Semi-Pro”……“Champion? At least I wasn’t riding the bench!” Liked Chad when he was here and honestly don’t care either way. Just too bad our divorce here didn’t end better (also see one Palmer, Carson).
