5 months ago: HOUSTON, TX - JANUARY 07: (L-R) Running back Cedric Benson #32 and quarterback Andy Dalton #14 celebrate after Benson scores on a one-yard touchdown run in the first quarter while taking on the Houston Texans in their 2012 AFC Wild Card Playoff game at Reliant Stadium on January 7, 2012 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images)
The Bengals went into the locker room trailing the Texans by a score of 17-10 at halftime. The Texans, thanks to a freak pick six by J.J. Watt, have all the momentum, but the Bengals get the ball back first in the second half. They need to do something with it.
The Texans are fired up and so are their fans. If the Bengals can score quickly, they can stay right in this game, but if they can't this game can get out of hand quickly. They still have plenty of time to win their first playoff game in over 20 years as long as they come out firing on all cylinders in the second half.
Hey, this is the Bengals. They've been a second-half team all year. Here's your open thread.

Second?
emeybee - January 7, 2012
Marvin is challenging the review between you and I......
The Van Buren Boys - January 7, 2012
After it clearly showed me hitting the button first. But hey, that's how we roll.......
The Van Buren Boys - January 7, 2012
On my screen it shows second
But since there’s not enough evidence to overturn, Marvin loses again.
emeybee - January 7, 2012
lol
Blue Steel - January 7, 2012
He is now trying to challenge that ruling too.......
The Van Buren Boys - January 7, 2012
He's spending halftime sewing some new red flags to use
Maybe the refs won’t notice ;-)
emeybee - January 7, 2012
hahahaha........
He’s giving the blow up doll in the review booth a pep talk……
The Van Buren Boys - January 7, 2012
this just in... Marvin is challenging the challenge rules

Was Marvin trying to challenge halftime?

"You really think the bengals still have a change in this game"
or some bullsh*t like that it pisses me off when he spews that stupidity acting like it was dalton’s fault for throwing that int
Tampa_Bengal - January 7, 2012
*chance not change
Tampa_Bengal - January 7, 2012
I'd actually be more worried if we were leading
joeb69 - January 7, 2012
Take out the amazing Watt play that happens maybe once a year...
and Marvin’s attack of stupidity and the missed FG….I like what we’ve seen here. Gruden has done some different stuff tonight. DL looks strong.
KSE - January 7, 2012
Jay Gruden makes some adjustments and scores 14 pts in the third
Yates gets hit with surprise stunts and plays out of his element

Nunyabidness - January 7, 2012
They said something about our game?
I’ve only heard them talking about Brees.
emeybee - January 7, 2012
Maybe Rodney got a boner watching Drew Brees get a boner watching JJ Watt?
Nunyabidness - January 7, 2012
Barkley maintained that the Bengals were going to win this game...
Roidney thought he was silly for thinking so

"You really think the Bengals still have a chance in this game"
and other things along the lines of that
Tampa_Bengal - January 7, 2012
We outplayed them the first half
no reason to believe we can’t in the 2nd half. I will say the Texan def line is impossing their will on the last tthree drives when they know we’re going to pass. Realy think we have to establish some run in the second half.
featherman - January 7, 2012
just imagine if they still had mario williams...
Blue Steel - January 7, 2012
well, iuf we had Hall???
joeb69 - January 7, 2012
that was in reference to just the defensive line for the Texans
the what if game could go all day
Blue Steel - January 7, 2012
Marvin is choking this game away
Two bad challenges. The one time he decides to be aggressive right before the half. Sweet God in heaven.
Anthony Cosenza - January 7, 2012 via mobile
He did the same thing with bad early challenges in the 09 playoff game.

Shouldnt Watts have been put on his ass, before the ball was released
From what i saw he wasnt in pass rush,i couldnt pinpoint what lardass just sat in his crouch, until it was way to late
still a incredible catch, gaurd should have been on him

Cause I think it’s been a good game. Random crap happens sometimes, but we mostly survived our worst quarter.

Agree, the bounces went against us and we're only down 7........
Jennings hasn’t been too bad. Hell = officially freezing over as we speak.
The Van Buren Boys - January 7, 2012

joeb69 - January 7, 2012
He even turned around for the ball and everything.........
Zim is like Yoda.
The Van Buren Boys - January 7, 2012
Jennings makes me think we can wait on picking another high round CB
with the resigning of Pacman of course…
Blue Steel - January 7, 2012
Stephon Gilmore, 2nd round
Alexneyer - January 7, 2012
ehhh... maybe
I want at least a guard and safety with two of the first three.
Blue Steel - January 7, 2012
I think we're gonna be fine.
We’ve been a second half team all year. Yates hasn’t looked good, IMO. He will turn the ball over if he keeps throwing dangerous passes like he has so far.
We’re only down 7 which isn’t much for this team. Second quarter is over so now we’ll come stormin back :)
C1ncy4Life - January 7, 2012
I hope you're right.
I could see this team straight collapsing after that second quarter

They are still loathe to cover a TE or Walter.

I don’t consider that “loathe to cover”.

I'm about to throw up on Marvin.
whodeycommish14 - January 7, 2012 via mobile
who is making the call in the booth though?
that’s who Marvin bases his ecision off of. Is it gruden?
Blue Steel - January 7, 2012
Gruden stays on the sideline.

Throw up doesn't mean what you think it means

Nunyabidness - January 7, 2012
156-156
in net yardage, with the exception of the J.J. Watt freak play, this is quite literally an even game
the new Bradfather - January 7, 2012
Gruden has call a pretty good game but
How come we haven’t strechted the field again after the Pass Interference?
AJ will make the play more often then not. We need to go deep a few times in this half.
C1ncy4Life - January 7, 2012
it would be more entertaining if you tried for one thing!
the new Bradfather - January 7, 2012
it is about time for our defense to force some turnovers.
D-Day77 - January 7, 2012 via iPhone app

Call captain ahab

emeybee - January 7, 2012
Cmon Dalton
Get some momentum going here like you did in the first half
C1ncy4Life - January 7, 2012
I wouldn't critique Dalton too much Mayock
the new Bradfather - January 7, 2012
According to Mayock, throwing it out of bounds does you no good. Something to keep in mind
FrankWyt - January 7, 2012
He would absolutely love Palmer.
sexsalad - January 7, 2012
stupid Raiders ;)
the new Bradfather - January 7, 2012
yuck
supergrover - January 7, 2012
Not sure I like that play call there
C1ncy4Life - January 7, 2012
Gruden gets too cute sometimes.
KSE - January 7, 2012
Come on line
emeybee - January 7, 2012
Offensive Line is getting manhandled
C1ncy4Life - January 7, 2012
Wasted another drive.
That call to Scott was stupid. Gruden is starting to play out of HC talks.
KSE - January 7, 2012
At least we flipped the field
D-Day77 - January 7, 2012 via iPhone app
You jinxed us ;-)
emeybee - January 7, 2012

andyfrombrooklyn - January 7, 2012

Today
They just don’t have enough weapons
occams_tiger_teeth - January 7, 2012 via mobile

every single time
Helmsy - January 7, 2012
Anyone having issues with reception?
Can watch other channels fine but for last 10 minutes blocky popup everywhere on directv HD.
bengalschatter - January 7, 2012
No issues..watching on DirecTV
OhWell - January 7, 2012
Nope.
I’m seeing the awful playcall just fine.
KSE - January 7, 2012
Nevermind
Must of been my receiver, changed channel’s and restarted receiver and out of the blue started working fine. Good, I think…
bengalschatter - January 7, 2012
nope
of course wyff4 in Greenville is good
david in upstate SC - January 7, 2012
the defense has the snap timed up
either Cook needs to change his rhythm or don’t look left before snapping
david in upstate SC - January 7, 2012
He's coached to do that
C1ncy4Life - January 7, 2012
well
the tap on the center by livings isn’t helping matters

They are coached to do that. It’s 100% on the coaches. FIX IT NOW!

I’m so over that commercial as I’m sure most NFL fans are including Jets fans.
C1ncy4Life - January 7, 2012
Must stop the run
featherman - January 7, 2012
Yep
Then when Yates drops back we need to go after him like we did the first 10 min of the game. Force him into a bad decision.
C1ncy4Life - January 7, 2012
can we switch over to the fire alexander thread
ticalcaldwell - January 7, 2012
cant make a conclusion on that
most of the guys on that line are backups
keithp - January 7, 2012
Foster is due to finally cough that ball up to us.
He’s already done it half a dozen times. This time? Get that ball, D.
KSE - January 7, 2012
What's funny is that, as many times as the ball has come out of his hands, I don't think he's actually fumbled yet.
sexsalad - January 7, 2012
the way to use Scott is as a pass catcher
Try to sneak him up the field against LB.
Don’t throw till he’s out of a crowd.
occams_tiger_teeth - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Our oline is being depants
keithp - January 7, 2012
we should have 4 to's by my count

joeb69 - January 7, 2012

But the D should be ready for that. They aren’t going to allow Yates to throw much and when they do it’s going to be screens and short dump passes.
C1ncy4Life - January 7, 2012
Easy Mayock
Pittsburgh has to play tomorrow, what if my Broncos beat them, then what?
the new Bradfather - January 7, 2012

sexsalad - January 7, 2012
uh, we've already done that on MHR
I’m not in the mood, I’ve already said I’m sorry
the new Bradfather - January 7, 2012
I’m sorry you felt it was an argument. I told you on the MHR thread, I did not in any way mean for you to take it that way. I was just trying to illustrate the fact that if the Broncos win, it’s not going to be because of what the Steelers did against the Jags
FrankWyt - January 7, 2012
that's water under the bridge
I’m focused on Sunday, that’s all
the new Bradfather - January 7, 2012

featherman - January 7, 2012
same as in pitt

I'm telling everyone the reason Gresh doesn't get more balls is the OFFENSIVE LINE
They have to keep the TE in to block far too much or Dalton will get killed.
C1ncy4Life - January 7, 2012
Why can't they have Lee do that?
KSE - January 7, 2012
so go 2TE and leave Simpson on the bench
indesignkat - January 7, 2012
also
get rid of the ball faster. Do a draw play when it isn’t the last play of the first half. Things like that mess with the defense’s rhythm.
indesignkat - January 7, 2012
I know Simpson just made a neat play for a 1st down but...
the rest of the game reminds me why I hope we can replace him. The 3 or 4 times a game where he doesn’t get catches that should be his is frustrating.
supergrover - January 7, 2012
The mistakes he makes are all very coachable..
The thing is, he doesn’t learn. It’s maddening.

How is this Marvin’s fault?
A freak pick 6 and the defensive Backfield getting burned deep?

The challenges were awful.
His team once again lacks focus in a big game. It’s a trend.

are you fucking kidding me?

indesignkat - January 7, 2012
I could see punting early when the Bengals D was playing lights out
but now that they’re worn down and giving up big runs, the last thing we want is another long Houston drive. The way they’ve been playing they could take half the remaining time off the clock.
indesignkat - January 7, 2012
you have to go for it here I think

The rest of our secondary would look great if they were all playing down a notch. Hall on a number 2, adam slot, clements takes crocks spot.

But Hall would have been huge for this game, even if he isn’t a number one.

Helmsy - January 7, 2012
good game
no excuse for those challenges either way
keithp - January 7, 2012
like wasting all the challenges in the first half?
marvin sucks… its time to let him go if they want to win something..
pedro_oliveira - January 7, 2012
name a play that he should have challenged instead
that that INT was an INT
Helmsy - January 7, 2012
he just shouldnt have challenged any of them
wasnt MARVINS fault, the oline is pathetic
anyone that says any different can……………….
keithp - January 7, 2012
Oh I agree....shouldn't have challenged either of them
the O-line is by far the biggest reason
Helmsy - January 7, 2012
You call butchering challenges a “decent” game? The Bengals team (as players) may just be the best team in the league for WINNING ONE GAME with Marvin as coach.

C1ncy4Life - January 7, 2012
Future
I’m tired of being excited for the future. We say that every season, and every season, it’s the same result. Every time something seems legit it comes crashing down on us.
Dorey15 - January 7, 2012

Overall I’m very happy about this year but next year, despite the infusion of talent this team will have, is just next year. We might have tougher competition. You only get so many chances in the Playoffs.
featherman - January 7, 2012
Opponents are known
They’re not too tough. And these young guys give us the first fresh start we’ve had in years, so it really IS next year now.
emeybee - January 7, 2012
Agree
This hurts but the building blocks are there. Need to fill some major holes on both sides of the ball but at least most of these guys are heading in the right direction.
JADefense - January 7, 2012

ExNFLScout - January 7, 2012

nicked83 - January 7, 2012

joeb69 - January 7, 2012
If there aren’t major, MAJOR moves made this offseason, next season will continue the same trend of having a losing season every two years.
Dorey15 - January 7, 2012
Thank you Nancy
emeybee - January 7, 2012
What major moves?
OhWell - January 7, 2012
im curious too.
JCompton41 - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Major moves for the defence and offence. Get some secondary help. With Hall back, draft/pickup some safeties and CBs that will actually see playing time. Upgrade the offensive line. Get another RB and another WR threat opposite Green that is reliable, and actually get the offence on the same page (which, granted, was most likely a result of the lockout). Also, get Marvin the hell out of here, contract or no contract.
Dorey15 - January 7, 2012
Agreed, we have to improve, not just stay status quo. Which is what I'm afraid of.
The Van Buren Boys - January 7, 2012
right
Barring a decent replacement for fat-ass Lippincott they will continue not to know how to manage a roster
occams_tiger_teeth - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Yes because it's not like we re-signed Whit/Leon or brought in Lawson/Howard/Clements or anything
emeybee - January 7, 2012
Those were great moves. And we need to have some more of those if we ever want to win.
Dorey15 - January 7, 2012
bottom line
Is Fifteen straight losses to playoff teams.
occams_tiger_teeth - January 7, 2012 via mobile
As well as 21 seasons without a playoff victory.

not much we can say. Draft a CB, OL, RB and S by BPA by position and we’re there. This team is close, so very, very, very close. Again.

you guys have nothing to be ashamed of
the new Bradfather - January 7, 2012
I dunno, someone needs to be ashamed of themselves after that last touchdown
Nunyabidness - January 7, 2012
Think about this
We’ve got 2 guys that are solid OROY candidates, and according to ProFootballFocus we’ve got the best pass rushing DE and DT in the league.
We’ve got 2 first round picks and a bunch more through the rest of the draft, plus we’ve got a lot of FA money. Gresh is great, we’ve got a lot of very solid D-linemen, and we’ve got some really good players we had to do without his year like Leon Hall and Jordan Shipley.
If we bring in a new RB, G, S, and CB in the draft and/or FA and we’re a playoff team for the next few years.

OG(OL as a whole would benefit), CB, S, and RB.
We have picks and if we can make a signing or two in FA we should be back in the Playoffs next year.
C1ncy4Life - January 7, 2012
3 area's should have read

Just wanted to say that you guys have a bright future with Dalton. He is awesome.
I know that losing is no fun, but with a few more positions shored up, the bengals will be kicking ass.
For sure you will be a playoff team for the foreseeable future.
And regardless of what the media says after the game, dalton is definitely the better qb right now. Yates just has a much better supporting cast for the time being.

C1ncy4Life - January 7, 2012
Question
Why is it that we lose in the Playoffs and all of a sudden people think that we have to make MAJOR changes?
People calling to fire ALL coaches? Cmon people. Those are the biggest Knee Jerk reactions this year, IMO.
C1ncy4Life - January 7, 2012
we thought they needed changes all year.
KSE - January 7, 2012
Right, but I didn't hear many fans saying things like
“We need MAJOR changes” or “We need to fire ALL coaches”
C1ncy4Life - January 7, 2012
They were
And last year it was deserved. This year it is not.
emeybee - January 7, 2012
Where did people say that Zimmer need to be fired?
They specifically said that Zimmer should go too. Never heard that all year, but I guess I could have missed it.
C1ncy4Life - January 7, 2012
Dorey said it
He doesn’t seem to strike me as being a regular.
People have questioned Zimmer. They just get beat down for doing it.
supergrover - January 7, 2012
I never said that. I said Lewis needs to go and we need upgrades on the defence, but I’ve never said anything but good things about Zimmer. Given, he’s had his bad days, just as any coaches have, but I actually am a strong believer that he’s the top coach on the team.
Dorey15 - January 7, 2012
Marvin hate has been persistant as has the OL coach as well.
but yeah, alot of knee jerky here.
KSE - January 7, 2012
People are calling for Zimmer to go
People are calling for “Major” changes. Those things are absurd to me.
We have the same needs we knew we did. Which means we have a lot less needs then we thought BEFORE the season started, IMO.
C1ncy4Life - January 7, 2012
We have the same needs we have all year
C1ncy4Life - January 7, 2012
I don't
OL coach, I’ve been calling since week 5 or so, even during the win streak. When they are that far in and still tapping the leg for the snap…
I agree w/Benson being not the answer. Don’t blame him as much as others, but would be content to not have him back.
supergrover - January 7, 2012
I agree with those comments
Byut saying Zimmer needs to go? Cmon man. That has to be knee jerk.
C1ncy4Life - January 7, 2012
what has Zim done
That says he should keep his job? I don’t see a defense that got better as the year went along, I saw a defense that got worse and worse.
Yarin - January 7, 2012
It's a defense built around Leon
So when Leon goes on IR, it’s going to get worse. They still held together pretty well overall.
emeybee - January 7, 2012
put up a top 10 defense with no secondary and reject players
Helmsy - January 7, 2012
Against a weak schedule.
It’s typical odd number years for this team. When we have weak schedules we make it places. When we don’t we win 4 games.
Is it rash to jump out and say fire Zimmer?— most likely yes. When I see a team never shows up for “must win” games that is the fault of ALL the coaches and it has become a habit.
Yarin - January 7, 2012
He has consistently put a good defense on the field
but I will agree with the mental mistakes. They showed up the first half. Shoulda had 3 INT’s at least.
Helmsy - January 7, 2012
I'm not saying that I think he should go
but the comments are defended appropriately. The Bengals have a lot of breakdowns late in games.
I’d be afraid to lose all the players to wherever he went! I think the defense is good, but acknowledge they have too many weird whole team mental lapses. I think if he gets decent replacement corners (I’m ready to let Adam Jones go(X)) and a damned solid safety, it can be a top defense still.
(X) (used X since can’t use asterisk) , although I think he is good enough, I don’t like the diva type stuff that he can still pull. That’s three or four times this year and he has been burned a few times this year, more than diva actions warrant.
supergrover - January 7, 2012
Agree with everything you just said
emeybee - January 7, 2012
that was from someone who doesn't post here
supergrover - January 7, 2012

This is how Our defense has played in December. What is shocking is the stupid coaching
And the lousy play by the Pro Bowlers Dalton, Gresham and Green. Especially Dalton.
bengals need to take a hard look at the line coaches, line players before looking to get that breakaway back. Bottom line is Bengals could not dominate line of scrimmage, both sides. Got to fix at in free agency or the draft.

keithp - January 7, 2012
I’m not complaining. We need to bring some coaches into this system that actually have some life in them and don’t just play conservative all game, every game.
Dorey15 - January 7, 2012
must be a little kid
keithp - January 7, 2012
If you’re referring to me with that comment… No, I’m actually older than a “little kid”. When you see winning teams, they don’t just get the lead and go into defence mode. It may work in hockey, but in football, the best teams are explosive offences (Packers, Saints, Patriots, etc.) that just continue to attack, unless they have top defences.
If you weren’t referring to me, disregard that comment.
Dorey15 - January 7, 2012

because I’m pretty sure you made a point then negated your point with another??
Helmsy - January 7, 2012
Proper arguments consider counterpoints. We don’t have a top defence, therefore we can’t go into a shell. Therefore, we need to attack, not play conservative.

to be fair
at some point, you have to stop using that as a crutch.
The Bengals deserved to be there. They looked great for the first half (even with that pick 6).
The Texans whooped the line in the second half. Are offensive lines schemes something you can adjust to? I’ve nver really thought of that. Anyway, it seems to be a common theme. I’ll go ExNFLScout on the OL coach. Getting a fixation.

You either want to be Pittsburgh or you are happy making the playoffs. Stop accepting average!
Seapit - January 7, 2012
Well
He makes mistakes, yeah. After almost 10 years as HC, his clock management is poor at times. But I think the organization takes 2 steps back if he leaves. Unless we make the playoffs a few years in a row, we won’t be an attractive place for other coaches or top FAs (and we’ll have trouble retaining our own). I honestly believe Marvin is our best chance at the moment for reasonable success (simply because of Mike Brown).

yeah this loss stings more than salt in an open womb, but we have the pieces to make the playoffs consistently. We have the draft picks to fix this. In a few hours we’ll all calm down and begin to think rationally again. Pacman is not going to get cut, he is a solid corner. Its mot fair to expect him to defend Andre all game.
