Bengals Coach Mike Zimmer A Candidate For Head Coaching Position In Tampa Bay

There stands a realistic chance that Cincinnati could lose both of their coordinators during the offseason. Jay Gruden has been connected as the favorite for the Jacksonville Jaguars head coaching position, according to reports, and Mike Zimmer is a candidate for multiple head coaching jobs.

According to ESPN, Zimmer is a candidate for the head coaching position position in Tampa Bay after the Buccaneers fired Raheem Morris last week following a mediocre 17-31 record in three seasons. Other candidates in Tampa Bay includes Houston Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, former Packers head coach Mike Sherman and Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray.

Jason wrote on Sunday that the Miami Dolphins have expressed interest in Zimmer now that everyone "senses" that Jeff Fisher will be headed to St. Louis.

The Bengals defense that Zimmer ran has finished in the top ten in two of the four seasons he's been with Cincinnati, never finishing worse than 15th (2010).

our coaching staff after this season.....NOW YOU LOVE US HUH....

Zimm has to get the Tampa job

Look at the other candidates

I’m beginning to think if we are left with just Marvin, its going to be a long season

Marvin replaced Brat and Chuck B

with success. I expect him to call Del Rio the second he knows Zim is gone. As for OC? Marvin can find another diamond. Hell, he might get lucky and land Hue if the new GM at OAK wants a new look.

IMO most of our success is based on the fact

That these coordinators know what type of player they want to play in there system
Both hide weakness’s in talent, either with scheme or play design, play calling
Its not that i dont think they can be replaced,I just dont think new coordinator’s just walk in
and pick up right where we left off,A transition like that would be a big setback, before we see any gains

Zimmer

has done a good job, with a lot of guys who were castoffs….would be a loss for sure. But there is going to be a lot of turnover of players on the defensive side maybe, tlo perhaps go along with a new coach.

that's the part that worries me about Zimmer leaving

is those who might stay because of him now deciding to follow or move elsewhere.

As long as he takes Pacman,i'm cool with that
i'll be on my ledge waiting to hear what happens with zimmer

of all things that could happen to the bengals this off season, the loss of zimmer worries me most about 2012.

I agree

Zimmer’s loss might be the worst possible thing that could happen
With Gruden’s loss a close 2cd

wade phillips

Turned Houston defense into a top 5 unit, and that’s with Mario Williams out.
Has head coaching experience.

I think it’s his job to lose.

Wade Phillips is a two-time failure as a head coach.

His DC abilities do not translate well, and every GM knows this.

Wade Phillips is a two three-time failure as a head coach.

You would think the league had figured out by now that Wade is not HC material.

Same with Norv Turner...

master OC…atrocious head coach.

Fitzgerald

Wasn’t he a great pick up as linebackers coach? promote from within is the usual MO for this team

Zimmer and Gruden

were outside hires. Otherwise, Zampese would have replaced Brat. Zamp might still end up OC.

Gray

My buddy who lives in Tampa told me last week that the media down there is saying that Jerry Gray was the leading candidate for the job.

as far as defense, im not too worried

Marvin is a defensive guy and we the players to big good for years… but the offense is a different story

wow lol i must still be sleepy

Marvin is a defensive guy and we have the players to be good for years****

I thought that 2,

But the defense didnt gain any traction, until Zimmer arrived

Heres an idea

how bout we bring back Ocho to coach the offense and Odell Thurman to coach the defense…..solved…..your welcome

you my friend

Are an absolute genius! Then we promote Tate to kick returner/ special teams coach!

Pacman to coach DB's,Benson as running back coach,
while we're at it

trade away any player with a contract higher than league minimum

Nate Livings as OLine coach

if we lose Zimmer, I sure hope it happens soon enough that we could at least have a chance to land Spagnolo.

i think if zimmer leaves Del Rio would be on the top of our list as DC if he was interested
Agree

I think Del Rio would be the leading candidate for the job. Lewis and Del Rio are very good friends.

O-Coordinator?

Who would be a good candidate to fill in there? I think Jay Gruden getting a HC job is a bit premature to be honest, but I wouldn’t flinch to take a job still if I was him.

i heard someone mention our QB coach being promoted as a viable option
bratkowski?
hue jacksons might be an option for O-coord

no guarantee hue survives the off season in oakland

if that would happen

then mike brown essentially traded for two draft picks and an OC… greatest trade of all time. no doubt lol

let's not forget

Jackson, as much as I love the work he’s done, doesn’t fit our offensive personel, he’s more into the vertical game, as we’re set up to run the west coast, I don’t think Dalton is a vertical QB.

not sure if hue only runs that style

any ideas what type of offense hue ran at usc in 2000?

Vertical.

He used a vertical/give the ball to Rice system at Baltimore too.

not a good fit for cincy then

hue might survive his review in oakland, might not..

Off topic

I had noticed that jersey prices had dropped all around the league. I know that Nike has the NFL contract starting in April, but why the drastic price cut unless the jerseys are going to be changed. That got me digging and finding some supposed new nike team designs. Has anyone else seen the ones they have for the Bengals and what do you think?

ive seen them, don't they look like these?

i like our current jerseys over these

Def not a fan

Of these. I’d rather we went old-school before going this direction

How far back old school?

Not the old Browns uniforms? Those were brought to Cincy from Cleveland. When they fired Brown in a private meeting he wasn’t invited to he said screw you and took all the equipment and left for Cincy. That’s why are first jerseys and helmets looked like the Browns because they were.

I hope the guy (or gal or deep space alien) who designed me has a little extra of what he has been smoking.

I could use an escape from reasonable reality once in a while.

this was just a concept crap

I don’t think they’ll look anything like this.

thats what i figured...
look at it this way

it sure would distract the team we play against ;)

Maybe we could have all orange turf like Boise St. has blue turf.
Yeah those are the ones

They turned out to be designed by a fan not Nike. Just wondering what the opinion was on them. I don’t like them at all, our helmet is the best in the league and Nike better not touch it. I could go with a new uni though. Our last came in what 2002? So we are due.

a fan of who?

the steelers lol.

well hopefully the only thing they change is the logo on the jersey to a check lol
check off mike brown

i’m in favor of it lol.

i do think nike makes a few changes

Because they have to if they want to make money. But I doubt it will be anything really earth shattering.

I wouldn't mind if they added another strip on the body of the jersey

that would be more bengal esk…

ha ha you beat me

adam jones anyone lol.

One of the rumors for the new jersey

is that Orange will be the primary home color. The helmet is expected to remain the same.

that would be cool
Not Real

This was done by a person on the internet and not by a designer from Nike. This has been floating around for a while.

I am not wprried in either case. Honestly, I think Gruden is nothing more than okay

as an OC and to be frank Zimmer’s defense have been above average but while I admit there are definate shortages of playmakers in our seconday, especially at the Safety position, this D scheme we have been using has broken down in the time we needed it most. Yes, I would like to see what Gruden can do with a full year of OTAs and another training camp and he has done enough to welcome him back but I am not convinced that he is the guy to take us where we need to go offensively. If we lost both Zim and Gruden I wouldn’t call it a good thing but it isn’t the end of the world either. They are both great compared to what we had in Bres. and Brat but that isn’t really that hard to do. I would welcome them back but I do not covet them. I see Zim as being a bit over rated. Phillips was plainly superior in making adjustments. Gruden is really becoming predictable. I think we can attract an upgrade in both of these areas with the potential improvements it is likely we can make. As for me it is six of one and half a dozen of the other if they stay or not.

I don’t think either of them will serve themselves well if they go. Gruden is going into a pretty difficult position in Jacksonville and I am not confident that Zim has the temprement or organizational skills to be a HC. Time will tell if I am right. I am a fan of continuity but I am not interested in continuing our past and in many ways our recent past. Hell we came in 3rd in the division and got our tails waxed agqainst the better teams in the league. All of this we have potential stuff is not getting thru to me. Yes, we do have potential but so have a lot of failed enterprises. This potential has to be realized before it really means anything. It isn’t like we wpuld be losing a couple of guys who took up deep into the podt season. Stop wringing your hands guys. We can do as well or better on the open market for both of these positions.

Well said

Ive been feeling like this was coming from someone .. I’ve tried to say it too, we were good for a rookie 1-2 punch with dalton and green, literally, 1st rounder 2nd rounder, but other than AJ’s undeniable abilities and Reds cool head did this offense do? They ranked 20th in overall off, they got wiped off the table like bread crumbs by Houston. I mean we are all excited like we should be but really did our squad play like Brady’s squad does year in and year out, Absolutly not, not even close…. Do we have the same talent pool, I think we are close, a better O line and a better Rb maybe we could have risen the Red horse to glory. But Grunden was able to pull it together with no OTA and no offseason. I think another young or experienced OC could more than likely do the same or better. If he stays maybe next year no more Vanilla, who knows. And in Zimm, I love the guy he’s got heart passion and the guys play for him, he would be a big loss, but what if Wase Phillips was in charge or Del Rio or Spagnola (sp?) … Don’t you think they might be able to do the same or better? I think it would be a huge blow to a franchise trying to clean up its act and fly like the rest of the teams in the league but I think we can fill those spots with other worthy DC/OC’s…. I mean noone even thought the Grunden hire was a great fit at the beginning of the season and now teams want him as a HC… How tides change

Gruden

Damn spell check

+1,000,000
+1,000,000

Said samething yesterday and got blasted. Zimmer is way overrated. Our sheme is terrible can’t covet te’s or rb out backfeild. Never do we do anything to confuse offense. To say talent not there is just crazy, I bet anybody STEAK DINNER we have more 1sr rd picks on defense than any team in league. Hall, Jones, nelson, jennings, Mays all top 50 picks. Coach em up Zimmer. Oh and not to forget all 1st rd linebackers. Zimmer is average coach at best.

im just done replying to your posts about this
+100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
zimmer

Has done so much with cast offs. If we get a quality 4-3 guy like del Rio, I’ll agree it will not be a drop off, but zimmer has been great. You don’t coach a team to 4th and 9th by being overrated. He’s a damn good coach, and has made a scheme to cover up his weak positions.

yea its just some of his players need to step up

like crocker, which will be replaced and Rey needs to be more consistant.

will say reys his fault

Rey should have been.more than ready to step in a MLB, and crocker shouldn’t be used in coverage. And zimmer has never tried anything to cover a te. So he hasn’t been perfect, and he has misused people. But that also has to do with not having the talent in the back end. It’s a mix of both.

yes i think all the coaches on staff are somewhat handcuffed.
i needed a handicap sticker just to watch this game.

thats the way mike brown operates.

well IMO Crocker has no excuse

He has a had a few good blitz, but that doenst make up for getting his ankles broke, whiffing on a few tackles that led to big TD runs, dropping easy picks…. the only reason why he is this position cuz he brings leadership to the table and we don’t have a better back up.

our defense is built around solid CBs and good DL... we need a bad ass SS to make up the difference by getting sure tackles and a few turnovers here and there
whatever happend with roy will. did he even play on another team this year?
i think he decide just to retire... im sure he got out of shape quick

Please stop saying cast offs. What other coach in NFL has that many top picks to play with? And what scheme are u talking bout? We got beat on every third down all year.

Compton, I said I would welcome both Gruden abd Zim back

My point is losing them will in all likelyhood not be as large of a problem as many make it out to be. Especially not that the atmosphere is seemingly on the upturn. The best case senerio would probably be for them to return there is no sense in wringing our hands over it. Del Rio doesn’t seem to be getting much play for a HC job and he and ML are buds. I think he would fit in just fine for example.

I got what you were saying

Just don’t see zim as overrated at all. He’s find very well here, keeping this defense in the top half of the league every year. But I agree zim can be replaced by someone like del Rio and wouldn’t be a drop, and maybe del rio could be an upgrade.

What we need to get used to here is seeing good players and coaches go.

If this team continues of upgrade personell as it hopefully continues to grow as an organization the quality of the lesser skilled will improve as former starters become backups to upgrades we bring in.

It is an interesting dynamis. It goes from the bottom up (bringing in projects to develop to replace starters, I call it Phase 1), to top down (where we bring in top talent to start while pushing good players to secondary roles, Phase 2) to bottom up again as, now that you are set with quality starters, you again have the luxury of bringing in projects and allow them to learn behing quality starters and truly become a next man up team. This is phase 3. This is where Pittsburgh, GB and the Pats are.

We were phase 1 for a long time. We are now entering phase 2 which will ake a couple of years to complete. If we continue on this path we will enter Phase 3 in, say2014 maybe 2015 when we are stocked with quality young to mid aged starters and their replacements are being gooomed to replace them. Then it is truly next man up which allows you to weather all but the most difficult of injury years.

I am not as worried as I was a couple of days ago

From what I have read on the net, zimmer is by no means a favorite in any race. The list for the bucs job as mentioned on above is packed with quality names, even if they have failed before as head coach. same for gruden, I don’t think he will be gone this year anymore. Not because of the playoff game, but becasue of the names that are being thrown around. Jax is looking at guys from green bay as well, the jets OC, Falcons OC, and more. They to me are like the miami, they need a sexy name to get fans in the seas again and what better way then with schottenhimer (excuss spelling) from the jets or the OC from Green bay.

I think Green bay will be cleaned out of their coaches this year.

For all u Zimmer lovers!!!

Name me only one ELITE Qb, Rb, or Wr we stopped all year. Hell we didn’t even play a ELITE qb so u better be ranked high. Guys Dalton was better than all but two Qbs we faced this year. We didn’t face a top 5 offense(and please don’t say BILLS)

We only faced 2of top backs this year.

Jones-Drew and Rice.

You're missing a few

But you just hate on Zimmer o it won’t matter to you

Foster Tate mendenhall Mjd Rice Lynch F Jackson F gore

I think that’s a pretty good list to have kept the majority of them under 100yrds and some around 50

no its not

They are there teams best players on teams that either had weak wr or weak Qbs. Take away Green and Gresham u think any of our running backs a ever get a 100 yards on a top 5 defense?

Ok

Don’t know who u consider a top back but check this out.
Steven Jackson on horrible rams team where we only gotta stop him had over 150 total yds on us.

Fred Jackson had over 100 total yds + 1td

Jones-Drew had 85 rushing yds 1td

Chris Johnson came into game avg. around 2yds a carry put up over 120 total yds

I'm not extrapolating on anything further

You will refuse to be convinced that you could be wrong. I’ve read your hate filled posts at coaches, the team and our writers and frankly, I’ve read enough.

Hate?

I’m a loving person my friend but I don’t have to agree with u all. Were bengals fans and quite honestly a lot of people don’t know what championship organization are supposed to be like. I hear a lot of people saying we should franchise Nelson. What other team in NFL will tag him? Are Yall serious? If I bash Benson, Simpson, or Tate it wouldn’t be a problem. So please stop judging me I don’t hate any one I just know Football that’s all. And I will challenge anybody to a debate.

No you don't know football and you have proven that many times over

as many people have pointed out

What many people?

Just go look at replies to your comments

but it doesn’t matter you fail to be convinced no matter what anyone says

No other team will tag him because he plays for the Bengals lol.

If that’s the only way he stays then why not. The only other guy IMO would be tag worthy is Collins but that would be way to much money and I wouldn’t do that. Fanene or Simms maybe but I’d doubt it.

I agree

But we have too much money this year to be tagging guys. If we really wanna keep him then why not sign him to 3or4 yr deal?

That's what the tag is mostly used for

Guys that we can’t get to sign for some reason or another we tag for one year and go from there. I would like to see him signed to a long term deal and I don’t know if I would tag him if he didn’t sign. It’s an option though.

None of our free agents would even be thought but Nugent for tag.

Remember u tag a player u pay them top five for there position. Nugent the only player who I could imaging has best chance. I wouldn’t pay none of our free agents top five money. Why pay when we can pay best free agent at that position to come at that price or cheaper. I’ll jump off bridge if any other players besides Simms or Nugent get tagged.

A full half of our D can be replaced without much problem.

It is time we looked at these guys objectively, cut the average or worse players and went out and got what we need. That is if we are serious about really competing for more than just a lucky WC spot. I think this team has a lot of promise but we need to cash in on it or it will be wasted.

+1,000,000

Thank u very much. Look fellas we aren’t the 90’s bengals no more get out of that mind frame. Rookie offense or not I’m not celebrating losing to the Texans a way more inexperienced team than ours. So what does that say either the players bad or the coach bad. We have to re load on certain positions for depth alone. Crocker, Wilson, Geathers , Jennings all need there exit papers this afternoon. Clements if u wanna try for compete for safety spot go ahead if not thanks for year. Nelson I’m not paying u squat over 2.5mil. Hall and Pac-Man come to camp in shape because its go be 2 to 3 new corners competing for spots. I’ll love for us to grab best dt in free agency.

I am basiclly with you except for the DT part

Not that I don’t think a good DT would be a good thing but I would put RG in that sentence. Two RBs, two Gs, two safeties and two corners. We need upgrades in all of those areas. If we can get one of our guys to step up and be that gut, great. But we cannot go into a gunfight with a knife anymore and expect to survive. We need to seriously upgrade ALL FOUR of those position groups if we expect anything more than the frustrating history we have been dealing with. I am frankly getting tired of waiting for us to step up and really compete.

Yes you are correct. The only thing is you need to be careful where you use it.

The guy is going to get a big check so you better reserve that tag for someone you can’t typically replace. He will be paid like the #3 guy in the NFL at that position as I believe he gets the average of the top five saleries in the position. (I think). You tag a guy like Green or Whit – not Collins is good for example, replaceable with a top five round pick. But you can probably sign him as a starting RT and move a less mobile Smith to RG or preferably LG (his more natural side) and draft another RT to convert to RG as Ts are generally more athletic that Gs and we lack athleticism in the G position. Many of the best Gs in the game were converted Ts.

Pray, Collins wants to start and get paid starting money.

We can’t pay for two starting RTs. The solution is to move him or Smith to G and scrap Livings while giving Boling another year to reach his potential, if he has any.

And dont forget buddy!!!

We LOST to Denver with Tebow at Wr, up by 20 in 4th let a rookie beat u at home. That’s a embarrassing dude. I’ll be mad as hell if Zimmer was head coach of my team. I don’t care how much players like him, I’ll rather play for a coach I hate at moments than play for a players coach with no discipline. At that’s what the bengals play with no discipline and lack of communication. Ain’t no damn way with all the experience Crocker and Clements bring to table along with Jones and Nelson being freakish athletes u have that many busted plays in secondary. I’m not saying I want Zimmer fired but I do want secondary coach fired.

The secondary coach who got Jennings, Nelson, and if you talk to 49ers fans Clements playing well...

Damnit, I said I wasn’t going to read anymore of this garbage.

Don't get so worried about it Oregon. We are all just shooting it here.

If any of us were genuises we be would be out there doing it for a living. This ia all for fun bud.

Who is your ideal replacements?

We had a solid D this year. Teams are going to give up yards especially to teams elite backs and receivers, it comes down to damage control. Compared to other teams we did well against MJD, Gore, Hillis, Jackson, Johnson, Foster, Tate, Rice, and all others. Out side of the last Ravens game no back ran wild on us.

Depends

I like Barron, Jenkins and a Lb in draft. Jones Clements hall and Jenkins a be best cb in our division. Gotta think Crocker really killed us this year, replace him with Mays and Barron. Re sign Nelson and bring in veteran to compete with. Lawson, Howard, Rivers, Rey, plus a young tackling machine from draft our lb is upgraded from this year. Our d-line is our money makers we need good depth, depth, and depth. We seen how bad we misses Sims and Dunlap. So re sign everybody but Geathers and get best dt in free agency. Sims got hurt so want get that much in free agency. Defense can be great if we get some aggressive ball hawks in secondary. Jenkins is better than Joe Haden and Barron would be our best Safety in long time. I’m taking them with top 2 picks and James in 2nd and best player available in 3rd.

What are they are they ratings when it come to coverage?

Clements got beat or was beat on every pass this year. I don’t think Jennings was responsible for not one incompletion. Nelson is ok but dropped close to 5int and always go for big hit but receiver still catches ball. If u ok we this type of production that’s on a as a fan. But if we ever wanna be Elite them problems have to stop. Losing Hall was key but be real he was getting killed also. U lose Joseph and replace him with 4 1st round picks (Jones, barely played last year,Jennings, Clements, Mays) and that was our worst secondary in how long?

Both places would be bad hires

Tampa Bay had its greatest success when an offensive mind (Jon Gruden) was running the show with a steady QB (Brad Johnson) and a scary defense (taught by Tony Dungy). Zimmer would be a DC replacing a DB coach who was totally unqualified to be an HC. Z needs to stay.

Gruden did well considering the learning curve from Box Ball to Big Boy ball. He had many offers during his AFL run and never moved on, and I do not expect any movement from him.

Fisher gets the gig in STL with Del Rio as his DC (they really do think alike). JAX will go with Sherman, who won a ring as GB OC in XXXI to revamp their anemic one-dimensional attack. Tampa and Miami end up with Mike Mularkey and possibly Bruce Arians. Both teams need ready OC’s to get heir QB’s going.

Gotta get back to work. See ya later.

I think the only one you got right was St.Louis

Bruce Arians is going to retire,Sherman will never be a NFL HC again(but we are talking about the Jags)
Tampa you said it they went defense, then Gruden took them over the top, they will go that route
The box ball to big boy ball is the most overrated comparison one could make, everyone doesnt start out in the NFL
I’d be surprised to see Miami go with a offensive guy

I think that if Zimmer goes ML, who is good friends with DelRio, woud have the inside track to bring him here.

He would possibly be an upgrade over Zim who I think has kind of run his course here in some ways.

Just seen Marty is interviewing in Tampa

I thought Marty didnt even want to coach,i cant believe he has been coaching in the UFL
How stupid are NFL GM’s this guy has been on the shelf for a few years now
IMO besides winning the big game,he might be the best coach ever
