During seasons we've covered the Cincinnati Bengals into the playoffs, the offseason began far more suddenly than the depressing unwinding of a four-win season. It's a shock to the system, if not a bittersweet one for the fact that Cincinnati made the playoffs (a comfort few are taking solace in). That being said, even though the NFL playoffs continue, the offseason has begun for the Cincinnati Bengals. And with that, players have contracts expiring. The free agents we hope returns:

Reggie Nelson |
One could argue that Reggie Nelson might be Cincinnati's biggest free agent priority heading into the offseason. Though he struggled in Jacksonville early in his career, Nelson is being given the opportunity to develop under Kevin Coyle and the Bengals were rewarded with what was his best season. Against the pass Nelson allowed an opposing quarterback rating of 73.9 and before the regular season finale, Nelson was one of the team's better run defenders with a positive Pro Football Focus score.
Anthony Collins |
Every time there's a need for Anthony Collins to step in as the team's backup tackle, he does it flawlessly and without hesitation. Considering that there's virtually no shot for Collins to start at either tackle positions, there's a good chance Collins could review his options during free agency and perhaps he might find a job starting in this league. But you won't find a better backup tackle if he leaves.
Mike Nugent |
Though Mike Nugent finished the season rather inconsistent, missing at least one field goal in three straight (including the wild card loss to the Houston Texans), Nugent was one of the league's most consistent and accurate kickers, converting 27 of 29 during Cincinnati's first 14 games. Along with his accuracy, Nugent knocked nearly half of his kickoffs into the endzone this season.
Bobbie Williams |
Well aware that Bobbie Williams is getting long in the tooth, consider this. Nate Livings and Mike McGlynn are also free agents, virtually leaving no starting guards on the roster. At one point during his career, Williams was considered one of the league's better offensive guards. Even as a shadow of his former self, Williams is still a better guard than any player on this team.
Jonathan Fanene |
Bengals defensive lineman Jonathan Fanene posted a career-high 6.5 quarterback sacks this season, largely as a situational interior pass rusher. It's the second time in three seasons Fanene has generated at least six sacks.
Pat Sims |
Sims suffered an ankle injury against the Cleveland Browns and then, as fate would have it, suffered another injury during practice leading up to the second Steelers meeting. Before Sims' injury the Bengals sported the league's fifth-best rushing defense (92.7). Once Sims went on season-ending Injured Reserve, the Bengals allowed 131 yards rushing per game, including three of the rush defense's worst performances. We're not saying Sims is directly/indirectly responsible. Just that it's hard to ignore.
Brandon Johnson |
As one of the team's better coverage linebackers (played below par this year), Brandon Johnson is often playing in nickel packages, but more importantly he's one of the team's best backup linebackers. With guys like Manny Lawson heading into free agency and the unknowns with Keith Rivers, if nothing else Johnson would be a good insurance policy.
Frostee Rucker |
Of the defensive linemen on the Cincinnati Bengals, Rucker is probably the least appreciated. According to Pro Football Focus, Rucker is the team's best run defender with a score of 9.5. Though not a consistently great pass rusher, he does get to the quarterback.
Adam Jones |
First thing's first. Adam Jones shouldn't be starting with the Cincinnati Bengals. He's immensely talented, but he's equally undependable with his propensity of finding trouble. That being said, once Leon Hall returns with Nate Clements, Adam Jones would be an adequate nickel cornerback or replacement if another series injury depletes the position.

My guess which counts for nothing
Bengals will try to resign Sims and Rucker on the D Line, and Fanene and Geathers will not return…. Howard and Rey may be the only linebackers that played this year that will return… Nelson and Jones return in the secondary…
txbengal29 - January 9, 2012
new faces
IR guys Hall, Muckleroy, Rivers
Moch
Free agent or draft to replace Crocker
Rookie CB to compete for playing time, and insurance for Hall
txbengal29 - January 9, 2012
i think geathers returns
Won’t be to expensive and good against the run. Need some vets on d and won’t find many better for the price then geathers should be.
JCompton41 - January 9, 2012 via mobile
Agree about Geathers
He is still under contract (2012 season will be final year), carries a relatively manageable cap number (roughly $4.2M for 2012), and is still only 28 years old and is solid against the run. Geathers just completed his 8th NFL season, but is still only 28. He was very young coming out of college.
The_Black_Stripes - January 9, 2012
i think we resign 7 out of those free agents
nelson will be back no matter what… he will get franchised if we can come up with a deal for him
AMAS85 - January 9, 2012
franchised?
while i like nelson and hope the bengals bring him, i have doubts he’s worth sanders or Polamalu money.
palewook - January 9, 2012

Yarin - January 9, 2012
Sanders?? Bob Sanders, I believe, is on a veteran minimum deal with S.D. (if they didn't release him)
The highest paid safety in the League is Eric Weddle of the Chargers (signed a 5year/$40M deal last summer). I think the Bengals would be prudent to reach a long-term deal with Nelson.
The_Black_Stripes - January 9, 2012
sanders is a fa now
and gotten older, however he does have this in his past
palewook - January 9, 2012
Once the Colts released him, that contract was voided
So he really only received the $20M in guaranteed money, but he is in NO WAY near the top of highest paid safeties in the NFL.
Sanders was released by the Colts more than two (2) years ago! That contract from 2007 is long gone, and Sanders only played two seasons under its terms.
Eric Weddle is currently the highest paid safety, and Bob Sanders is currently on a league minimum salary.
The_Black_Stripes - January 9, 2012
he's currently a fa
my point was simple before, noting the 2 biggest safety contracts from recent memory, and saying that nelson probably should not be paid like a top 5 safety in nfl (ie: franchises)
palewook - January 9, 2012
I agree that I would NOT want to franchise Reggie - would prefer a manageable long term (i.e. 4-to-5 years) contract
The_Black_Stripes - January 9, 2012
i think he is worth franchising if we cant sign a deal for a short term solution
but he definately is a play maker on this defense
AMAS85 - January 9, 2012
Agree, add Simpson
I agree with your thinking, but I would add Simpson to the list if he is willing to sign a reasonable contract if his legal issues are resolved. He has so much talent, I’d hate to give up on him yet.
I say Johnson and Fanene are probably looking to go elsewhere so they can either start or get more playing time.
I’d sign Williams to a one year contract.
AWC71 - January 9, 2012
lol i really dont see why people don't like simpson
his numbers are pretty good for a 2nd option (really a third option after Gresham).
He can make big plays and he is a good blocker… not to mention he had the longest reception of the year on our team.
AMAS85 - January 9, 2012
i would like someone with surer hands
I can’t stand his drops on a 3rd down! But I still want to keep him as a 4th/ big play wr.
JCompton41 - January 9, 2012 via mobile
i think its been a while since he had a drop on 3rd down... i think he definately stepped his game up in regards to making the big catches
AMAS85 - January 9, 2012
^THIS
Oregonbengalsfan - January 9, 2012
still has to many drops.
Not consistent enough to be counted on. If he’s on he’s great, if he’s off he’s useless.
JCompton41 - January 9, 2012 via mobile
i think the majority of his drops came during the first 3 or 4 games and since then i don't think he had that many
can you think of a specific pass that he dropped with in the past 8 games that would have made a difference?
I just need a lot of help understanding why re-signing simpson would be a bad idea.
AMAS85 - January 9, 2012
Because the hate is already ingrained
Oregonbengalsfan - January 9, 2012
the 8.5 pound clown mistake
is a bit of an issue for some people with him
palewook - January 9, 2012
With no facts to base it on
We don’t know ANYTHING about it, but yet he’s being condemned.
Oregonbengalsfan - January 9, 2012
unless you're able to transmute space, time, or matter
we know a couple of the facts. those haven’t changed.
palewook - January 9, 2012
Yes, that marijuana was in a house that he owns
and a shipment was sent to that house and signed for by someone else.
Those are the only facts and they prove nothing about Jerome’s involvement. And this little “idea” of them waiting till the season is over… yeah they’re going to do that (/sarcasm)
Oregonbengalsfan - January 9, 2012
he was home at the time
christ. how many times has 8.5 pounds of dope accidentally wound up at your house during your life? how about even 1 pound? or to anyone you know? ever?
what are the odds?
what are the odds that a normal person in that situation wouldn’t have been put in cuffs and sent directly to a judge.
if you want to believe in fairy tales, feel free. i’m going to have to stick with the reasonable view on this one though. from a legal perspective, ask yourself honestly, what would a reasonable person believe if 8.5 pounds were found at a specific location?
palewook - January 9, 2012
gotta say
being a former Letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, it happens more than people think, the buyer sends it to someone close and picks it up out of there mailbox, usually when people aren’t living at that address though or are known to be gone for lengthy periods of time….it does happen.
joeb69 - January 9, 2012
yup use the out of towners house for a drop location or the foreclosed house
palewook - January 9, 2012
exactly
and if they didn’t know someone else was there…he was at an away game, mail, especially under investigation, would be delayed at least a day or two
joeb69 - January 9, 2012
So he was home and just got home from an away game
Other people were living in the house. He hasn’t been arrested. Sorry I’m not believing in fairy tales. I am looking at the ONLY FACTS available, and they don’t condemn him.
Oregonbengalsfan - January 9, 2012
It's 8.5 lbs of a plant
That’s 8.5 lbs no one (especially the Federal government) should be wasting their time investigating the origins of. Ever heard of Sam Hurd or Nate Newton?
Also, I would be VERY surprised if any legal proceedings were initiated against Jerome at this point. It has been close to 4 months and nothing has happened. The feds don’t wait to pounce on trivial matters like this (and yes, even 8.5 lbs is trivial, especially compared to Sam Hurd’s stash, Nate Newton’s famous stash, and other much bigger fish).
The_Black_Stripes - January 9, 2012
not a fan of the war on drugs
its a huge waste of tax dollars.
just looking at the situation simpson has himself in. resigning him with this particular legal hurdle in his future does make him less attractive to teams in the nfl.
palewook - January 9, 2012
True - which will scare a lot of teams to the point of driving his price down (which isn't very high to begin with)
With Shipley returning and possibly adding a mid-round WR in the draft (i.e. DeVier Posey or Ryan Broyles – coming off an ACL tear, Broyles may slip in the Draft), I would be open to signing Simpson to an incentive-laden 3-year deal.
The_Black_Stripes - January 9, 2012
the way mike loves a bargain
unless simpson is in cuffs, i’d say the odds of him being back in cincy for the next 2-5 years are real good.
palewook - January 9, 2012

its a war on our wallets… tax money is being wasted… you know its easier for a minor to get weed than cigerettes or alcohol…
AMAS85 - January 9, 2012
And I've served jury duty more than once
if everyone took this approach, you’d either be locked in the jury room until there is a hung jury, or you’d be putting away innocent people.
Oregonbengalsfan - January 9, 2012
good
then you’re familiar with general jurisprudence already
palewook - January 9, 2012
And?
Oregonbengalsfan - January 9, 2012
thats the reasonable standard
palewook - January 9, 2012
What's the reasonable standard?
That we condemn people without facts?
Oregonbengalsfan - January 9, 2012
hurd was clearly a drug dealer
simpsons case could have resonable doubt because the amount that was in his house could have been for personal house whether if it was for simpson or someone else that lived in the house.
I think the real issue here is if they will charge him for posession and the intent to distribute plus having it cross multiple state lines.
with it all said and done. And he gets charged for possesion I think he serves a lot of community service and a few weeks in jail. Willie nelson was caught with like 10 pounds of weed in his bus and I don’t think he served any time at all.
AMAS85 - January 9, 2012
If it wasn't in his name
And we know he didn’t sign for it there isn’t much they can do to him. Maybe possession for what was in the house already.
Bigcatdaddy - January 9, 2012 via Android app
I'd add
CB Kelly Jennings, LB Manny Lawson, TE Donald Lee, and WR Jerome Simpson. I’d argue that Williams is done, and we should keep Livings or McGlynn as a stop-gap solution.
EarthwormJim - January 9, 2012
Furthermore
I’d put Hall coming back as a 50% proposition, so we need to keep Hall and Jennings while building their replacements in the draft. I still think Simpson is an adequate #2.
It would be a travesty, and confirmation that Mikey hasn’t changed his stripes if they don’t keep the D-Line intact, as that was the brightest spot on the team this year.
And can someone please explain why Collins doesn’t get more playing time? It would seem that he or Andre can play the RG spot.
EarthwormJim - January 9, 2012
we will need to get a another quality CB in the draft or free agencie
im pretty sure Hall will be on the pup list at the beginning of next season
AMAS85 - January 9, 2012
I'd suggest two CB's
Each team needs at least three, maybe four guys that can cover seeing as how it’s now a “passing league”.
Anthony Cosenza - January 9, 2012
i would look to the eagles and trade rivers striaght up for samuels???
AMAS85 - January 9, 2012
RE:
That could be an option, but I’d bet that the Eagles would want more than just Rivers for Asante Samuel. Samuel has been to the Pro Bowl three or four times and Rivers can’t even play a full season. I’d think that Rivers and a relatively high pick (third or fourth rounder) would be fair.
Both teams seem to have a need on their teams for those positions, so the trade would make a lot of sense, but I don’t expect Mike Brown to make a splash like that.
Anthony Cosenza - January 9, 2012
collins should be the starting tackle with smith at guard
probably time for cincy to move on from alexander or at least order him to make specific changes in the line’s starters. alexander gets fixed on some players and refuses to look past those. he’s ignored mathis for years, pretty much ignored collins too.
palewook - January 9, 2012

joeb69 - January 9, 2012
no doubt. Alexander
probably has plans for Hudson (his pet roster space taker) and Boling to start at the G positions next season

can we replace alexander already
so his love feast with livings can end

been a long travelled road for some of the fans here
alexander sticks his feet in the sand and refuses to change course at times. braying about one player while ignoring a better player on his bench.
next season will be more of the same from alexander. damned shame too. collins should be starting. we have 4/5ths of the line we need on our roster right now. but alexander will only start 3/5ths of it.
palewook - January 9, 2012
No to Livings or McGlynn if Paul Alexander is still the OL coach
DTFCPDX - January 9, 2012
That D lines is good as a whole
Hopefully those FA will realize that if they do go else ware that their production will probably struggle. Fanene and Simms could probably start for most NFL teams but we have alot of talented guys in an 8 man rotation so they don’t get tired and draw alot of double teams. Unfortunately it comes down to money. Nelson has become one hell of a player. A guy that strikes a little fear in wr with his big hits. Those are my kind of guys, love me some defense. I think he comes back. If we can’t find a good FA guard I wouldn’t mind resigning Williams to a cheap short contract and drafting at that position for the next couple yrs. Collins is going to get some money thrown at him from a few team and he deserves it. Hope he comes back but wish him the best in his travels.
Bigcatdaddy - January 9, 2012 via Android app
for sure
out of all our FA, I want nelson back the most. Plus I think the NFL should fine refs for bad calls. I mean they can find any reason to fine players why not keep refs in check. Im tired of seeing a flag over legal hits….
AMAS85 - January 9, 2012
Nelson got screwed so bad on those calls
I’m afraid guys are going to be scared to make those hits because of flags and fines.
Bigcatdaddy - January 9, 2012 via Android app
I wonder how hard it is for a "Soprano" to get a Ref to do that twice a game (that's all it takes).
gratefulmax - January 9, 2012
so true
its going to eventually make the defensive player at risk
AMAS85 - January 9, 2012
Ghee
Any thoughts on whether he can step into a starting role?
EarthwormJim - January 9, 2012
if ghee couldnt wrestle playing time from kelly jennings who struggled most of the season
ghee is a bust in cincy. no idea how many years he has left on his contract in cincy. possible the bengals keep him around as emergency depth.
palewook - January 9, 2012
kelly jennings
8/1/2011: Signed a one-year, $1.835 million contract.
while he’s not great, he’s improved as the season went on.

KJ has played very solid football lately. he was learning a completely new scheme here and we could do alot worse than him.
Yarin - January 9, 2012
Here is my list
Must haves are these three
Pat Sims Absolutely have to get him back
Tony Collins Can you trust Andre Smith without him?
Reggie Nelson Secondary is weak with him, and he’s a good player.
Take note that the Dline stunk it up after Sims left….all during December. This also means we don’t have depth behind Sims so that is a thought for FA or the Draft. Pay Sims whatever it takes to get him back or use 1 of the first rounders for someone like Devon Still, Dontare Poe or Brandon Thompson in round 1.
As for the rest, meh. I don’t think Fanene or Rucker should come back for a third contract…bring in some new younger guys. Besides they were part of that awful month of December on the interior of the line.
BENGALS69 - January 9, 2012
Fanene is quality backup, but he’s that – a backup. He had 6.5 sacks this year to go with his 6 sacks in 2009 (didn’t play much in 2010) and those are very good numbers from your backup.
OhWell - January 9, 2012
Fanene had the best game of any lineman in the playoffs and has routinely graded out positively. He’s a key cog.
Cry - January 9, 2012
my take on who i'd want back
resign em:
WR Jerome Simpson (not in jail? vet min + incentatives)
RT Anthony Collins (move smith to lg),
OG Bobbie Williams (vet min offer – projected as depth + incentatives)
DE Jonathan Fanene, DE Frostee Rucker,
DT Pat Sims (pay him like a starter)
LB Brandon Johnson, LB Manny Lawson (pay him like a starter)
CB Kelly Jennings (2 million or less), CB Adam Jones (2-3 million + incents)
S Reggie Nelson (offer him base 2-4 million a year plus incentives for a top s contract)
K Mike Nugent,
forget em:
RB Cedric Benson, WR Andre Caldwell,
OG Nate Livings, OG Mike McGlynn, OT Dennis Roland,
TE Bo Scaife, TE Donald Lee
palewook - January 9, 2012
agree with all except
Lawson, that guy doesn’t wanna tackle and could not figure out where he was supposed to be all year
joeb69 - January 9, 2012
got doubts we resign lawson
he’ll command more money than brown will want to spend
palewook - January 9, 2012
The Bengals biggest offseason priority
is keeping the defense together. The biggest favor we can do Dalton is giving him a top 5 defense. If we are going to spend money, that’s the place to do it.
goffchile - January 9, 2012
wouldn't hurt to also land 2 guards and 1 rb
defense is a must as well.
palewook - January 9, 2012
offensively...
…our biggest priority is a starter quality guard. If we draft an RB, we should be ok.
goffchile - January 9, 2012
With the above list of Offensive Lineman who could potentially be gone.......
this is a huge need. Please, please, please let us sign a quality Guard in free agency. Then we can just draft one other to go along with Boling. Collins needs to be our starting RT with Andre at RG.
The Van Buren Boys - January 9, 2012
only way collins starts and andre gets moved to guard
alexander gets fired or ordered to make those changes.

all me to say wow
check out the sbnation mock draft. we’ll have months of doing this and no way in hell the draft breaks down like their predictions.
however, sbnation has the bengals drafting:
17. Cincinnati Bengals (from Oakland), Mark Barron, S, Alabama
21. Cincinnati Bengals, Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama
i’d do a happy dance for a couple of months with that draft
palewook - January 9, 2012
really?
Barron has a 47 ranking by one of the better draft guru’s, hers the link http://walterfootball.com/draft2012bigboard.php
joeb69 - January 9, 2012
i think this draft is heavy on cbs and light on safties
cincys best options for safeties in 2012 comes from what they already have, resign nelson to FS and move nate clements to SS. with mays/sands/crocker as depth.
and draft the hell out of cbs
palewook - January 9, 2012
I know
but to move from 47 to 17 is one hell of a REACH
joeb69 - January 9, 2012
i was more happy with a mock draft where we get richardson =)
aint happening though. and we’ve got 10000 of these mocks to see before the real one happens.
also, the combine will drop/raise some players on boards. nothing like someone showing up out of shape and posting terrible combine numbers to knock them out of the 1st round.
palewook - January 9, 2012
Wouln't mind this, but if DeCastro is sitting there at #17, the Bengals have to rush to the podium!!!
The_Black_Stripes - January 9, 2012
