Marvin Lewis Is In No Hurry to Sign Defensive Back Coordinator

According to the Enquirer's Joe Reedy, Marvin Lewis and the Cincinnati Bengals are in no hurry to hire a new defensive back coordinator. The position became available after former coordinator Kevin Coyle was hired as the defensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins in late January. Coyle had been with the Bengals for the past 11 years, nine of which were spent as the defensive back coach. Coyle was a favorite among many players, most notably former player and current Pro Bowler Jonathan Joseph.

Star-divide

The Bengals allowed the ninth fewest passing yards per game during the 2011 season, however, the secondary undoubtedly still needs improvement and a valuable hire for the defensive backs coach position is vital. Marvin Lewis agrees, saying that there is no need to rush the process.

"It's just a matter of getting the right fit for our staff along with working with Mike Zimmer and the rest of the coaches and they feel good about it," Lewis said. "That's why we're taking the time and doing due diligence."

Per Geoff Hobson, the two front runners for the position could be current Bengals assistant defensive back coordinator Paul Guenther and Hall of Fame defensive back Rod Woodson. Woodson, who was a coaching intern at the 2010 Bengals training camp, was the cornerbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders last season but was let go at the end of the year along with the rest of the Oakland coaching staff. Woodson played for then defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis while with the Baltimore Ravens, a partnership which included a Super Bowl XXXV Championship.

I want Woodson

he’s played CB and Safety at very high levels and did a nice job in Oakland last year after they had to replace Asomugha

Agree 100%
+1

No doubt. I believe Marvin’s player-coach relationship with Woodson (when both were with the Ravens) cannot be discounted. I also believe that their personal relationship is very strong, too, and given the fact that Woodson was a coaching intern here, I would imagine the job is his to lose. Woodson, of course, would be the one making the final decision to come here should an offer be extended to him, and if he has sincere aspirations of coaching in the NFL, this is an opportunity too good to pass up.

Woddson would unquestionably be a superb hire. I remember Zim saying that this defense needed to create more turnovers. Woodson, in his first seasons as an NFL coach, was in charge of a unit that contributed to the 18 total INTS the Raiders had last season (8 more than the Bengals team total of 10INTs).

Finally, even though Woodson played for the hated SteAlers and Ravens, I would welcome his addition to the coachign staff with open arms.

In other words

Zimmer is in full control of this …. Who ever he .. wants is who we will get.

I love this quote:

“It’s just a matter of getting the right fit for our staff along with working with Mike Zimmer and the rest of the coaches and they feel good about it,” Lewis said. “That’s why we’re taking the time and doing due diligence.”

That being said, getting Rod Woodson would be awesome! :)

Woodson is the answer... He could actually show the DB's what to do...
I agree it should be Woodson

but here’s how I translate the statement above.

“We know who we want to hire, but he’s coaching on Sunday”

neither the giants or the patriots

had much of anything resembling a secondary this year

I was thinking the same thing

but both secondaries are awful. I’ll give credit to NY’s sec coach because of the injuries he’s had to deal with, but I don’t know.

I think it's

“We know who we want to hire, but he has to decode if it’s a good fit for him and his family” Meaning Rod is their #1 choice but it’s up to him if he wants to move out of California.

decode = Decide

Someone will take the job.

Yet Why? Who wants to enter without personal? Leon Hall will be out this next year. Who is left? Mike Brown is on game with draft. Brown gives his coaches guys. Why would Woodson enter with the idea that the personal of this team is dismal? What if f Brown and Lewis give Woodson Mark Barron . Then and only then will the door open. Barron is a Woodson Guy! Will Brown and Lewis deliver?

what makes you say hall wont be back?

Its Personnel, not Personal in this context.

Everyone

Who ever has ever returned from the Leon injury/! Name one guy who ever came back in one year !

oh so its yourcdoctor
No Come Back

Name one guy who came back with the Hall?! Hall is OUT?!

he doesn have a special injury plenty come back from it now

were as years ago it could end a career

oh so its your doctor opinion

Got it.

Jamal Lewis

Jerry Rice, Nick Barnett, Tom Brady, Roman Harper, Edgerin James, Braylon Edwards, Donavan McNabb,

Tom Brady tore his achilles?

When? I know he blew out his ACL in ‘08 but I don’t remember him tearing his achilles.

If he did, I am certain Bernard Pollard was the cause of it. :)
Because he didn't.

So you’re right hahahah.

Yeah wrong injury here so ignore this :-)

But I did find a little interesting article about a 2009 study of Achilles tendon injuries which points out one tidbit:

*Of those that returned to play, they did so at an average of 11 months
although player performance was greatly reduced.

So it doesn’t look easy for Hall as Joe mentions. He has one hell of an uphill battle.

Thus, the Adam Jones dilemma...

The main reason to sign Jones is because they may not have Hall for awhile.

I hope Hall just goes to PUP at the beginning so he can continue to strengthen.
If the CB corps starting the season is: Clements / 1st round pick / Jennings* / Ghee — then you still need one more. Jones on a 1-yr deal might be as good as they can get.

*note — I recommend to resign Jennings — he showed improvement through the back end of the year and he won’t be too expensive

I'd take Adam Jones

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY before Jennings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. He had a bad game in the playoffs. Before that he played well all year at an elevated role. He will come back as the #3 CB

Jennings on a 3-yr deal / Jones on a 1-yr deal

Jennings (former 1st rounder) knows by now he is not a starter in this league anymore. He will take back-up money. I hope they can continue to get more improvement from him. If so, he could end up being a bargain. He has decent speed.

Jones probably still thinks he is a full time starter in this league. Still not clear if he is has matured enough for a good payday. He will think he deserves more than he will be offered. He may take a 1-yr deal for further opportunity to prove himself on / off the field. I would not sign Jones to anymore than 1 year.

I'd be willing to bring Jones back on a multiple year deal

Just not for a lot of money. I think he has definitely machured and realizes his role would be as the #3 CB. But that’s just my opinion. I was never sold on Jennings because even later in the season when he appeared to be playing better, there were several times wherehe was beaten badley but the QB missed the throw.

Terrell Thomas is another guy coming off of an injury that I wouldn’t mind taking a flyer on

Here's a success story

In February 2011, Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas tore his in workouts. 11 months later (January 2012), Thomas lit up the Steelers in the Playoffs and looked to be as close to his normal self as possible.

Yeah expect him back in December.

Go ahead and IR him.

Great post

And Thomas still managed to play in 11 games this past season, and he tore his Achilles during the offseason (in February as you stated). In other words, it took D.T. only 8 months to return. Leon’s injury occurred mid-November, and I think his overall athleticism compares more closely to D.T. than to Antwan Odom, let’s say (in terms of projecting a time table for Leon’s return). .

Right

8-9 months to return means he could be back in August training Camps. Back to full speed in 11-12 months could be in mid October-November

age may be a factor in that also
Antwan Odom

He didnt come back… remember?

Hahaha

He did, but didn’t I guess.

Antwan most certainly came back from the exact same injury (torn achiles) as Leon Hall

Odom injured his achiles in 2009 (Texans game) and, he was ready to go by the Start of 2010. He missed four games that year under the PED policy, but I recall that Antwan was fully healed (at least he was claiming to be) by the start of the 2010 training camp.

Now, whether or not he was effective upon his return is certainly debatable. However, he did, in fact, return from the exact same injury, and he returned in less than a year. Not really sure how the injury truly affected his game, seeing as how Antawn’s career had probably peeked in 2009.

Yeah that was the point I made before

He came back but he wasn’t very effective. Remember in the HOF game when he was getting straight man handled by Columbo because he had lost all that weight? Brutal….

Come/came back can be interpreted different

He never was slightly good again, and if he was, he was on PEDs. To me, his Achilles ended his career.

I agree that is effectively caused the end of his career

But he had probably already peeked. My point was it’s not like the injury prevented him from every playing another down (or stepping on the field) again. He was back in training camps, less than 10 months after the injury. Leon is younger and so I hope he can regain his effectiveness.

*it effectively casued the end of his career
I thought discontinuing the use of PED's ended his career...
Achilles injury, guys

Not knees like most of whom you’re mentioning. Hall has a very uphill battle. One guy I can think of who came back (but not in one year. More like 2-3) was Takeo Spikes. He had to re-invent his game though.

Exactly

In my mind, Leon was a good to very good #2 corner before the injury. Optimistically, he could probably come back at about 90% of where he was at SOME point. I don’t think I’ll ever feel comfortable with him being our #1 corner ever again. I didn’t feel that comfortable with it going into this season.

I feel you. A lot of scouts thought he’d be an eventual FS but with his new salary, we can almost kiss that goodbye.

I really like Leon as a cover man, and if fully healed, he can still be a very solid #1, IMO

Also, few know that Leon also covers kickoffs, and has done so almost his entire career. Not too many ~$10M/yr (from his new contract) who cover kicks.

Leon is the type of selfless team-first player that Marvin loves.

His kickoff coverage days are most likely over though after this injury.

Made your own point, who pays a guy 10 mill, and risks him covering punts
Dan Marino
Then again, no EVER would say

Dan Marino was fleet of foot….

about 500 guys

huh?

My guess is

That Guenther will replace Fitzgerald as the linebacker coach and Woodson will be hired as the DB coach.

sigh

little zimmer could work with the Lbers lol

at least if he failed Mike wouldnt hold back…

can we get hard knocks back in here damnit

same

I don't always believe great players make great coaches...

But I really liked what I saw on Hard Knicks when Woodson was “interning” with us. The one advantage an ex-player has, especially a HOFer, is that they’ll have the instant respect of the guys they’re coaching. And Woodson seemed like he was really bonding with the players in his short time there in ‘09. Considering he has Zimmer watching over the whole thing, I’d be all for giving him a shot.

depends on the player

Players who were smart and rely on technique and film study can be great coaches. Players who are just physical freaks and were just plain out more.talented usually make bad coaches.

Bowles would have been the answer if they had just moved faster

Every time it seems they are making some progress, there is an indication that they continue to be outmanuevered when it really counts. Just like with FA, you have to move fast when the right guy becomes available. They should have locked up Bowles as soon as it was apparent Coyle would be gone.

He would have still went to Philly

A DB coach cant go wrong there,or he will never get another job, odds are he ends up with a better job down the road
weather he earned it or not

Achilles Injury Recoveries

RT “@JeneBramel: @JoeGoodberry Derrick Burgess, Greg Ellis, Julian Peterson, Takeo Spikes, DeMeco Ryans, Demaryius Thomas some examples of good recoveries.”

RT “@JeneBramel: @JoeGoodberry Leon Hall issues will be range of motion, pain. He was never explosive but needs to change direction well to return to form.”

Are any of them cornerback's?

No, but that same guy is working towards getting me some info on CBs who’ve suffered the same fate as Hall.

Excellent, Joe. Good stuff. Thanks for sharing
Exact is my point. Who will recover ? Where are the same? Did injury slow the speed of these guys?

Fast is the game. Slow guys are slow. Is Leon Hall Slow? Will Leon recover? Dont bet on a guy who has a broken foot. Bet on a guy who will enter Cincy and Hit Hard. Everyone understands the Bengals! Bengals are Soft! Who will become better? Do the Bengals dance fhe day away/? Why are the Bengals lost in the headlights? Maybe Benson has a Point. Who wants to play for Mike Brown and Marvin Lewis? Would You want to play for the worst of the worst!.?

Same is the GAME, Money is still GREEN.. not Brown.

For the players may love one or both, but never all three.

I hope Benson doesnt, please leave Cincy, dont pass go,go directly to jail
Chili those are all absolute statements

and only a Sith deal in absolutes

Hopefully they dont rush to fill a spot
Woodson is definitely my first choice

But just for fun, let me throw a wilcard in the mix. Artrell Hawkins – Seriously doubt it happens but he did do a coaching internship with the Steelers this year and he already has a relationship with Bengals coaches and owner

BURNT TOAST

Babyhawk accomplished more in a Bengal uniform than his daddy, already

Brother
Really,i thought Artrell was his daddy

They are far apart in age,i assume
Maybe one of those 12 kid families

yeah, Artrell is his brother, not father....

However, I will say this also, Artrell did once return an INT for a 100+yd TD… :)

I remember

Getting free tickets given to me eating Bob Evans in my Bengal gear,we wnt to a Packer’s game and was down 40+
in the 3rd quarter, this old ladie must have been 60’s to 70’s was sitting in front of us,just destroying Artell

I like the idea of bringing Woodson in

but I have a slightly different reason. Yes, I think he will be good at coaching up the secondary but I also think he could be the key to getting Clements to move over to safety once the CB position is stabilized. Woodson reluctantly made that move and excelled once Marvin got him to move. Clements could revitalize his career with such a move and Woodson may be just the guy to convince him it is a good move.

I think the Bengals have to re-sign Jones and Jennings. We can’t expect Hall to be back by the start of the season and I’m not sure he’ll ever return to form. The difference between hall and everyone else mentioned above as returning from achilles injuries is that Hall has to be able to back pedal, rotate his hips, plant his foot, turn and go. Everyone mentioned above are players whose position requires them to move forward. Its the stress of Hall having to go backwards, rotate and explode out that will be hampered by the achilles injury.
