According to The Cincinnati Enquirer's Joe Reedy, Bengals middle linebacker Rey Maualuga could get suspended for multiple games if he is charged with a crime stemming from the report that he was in an altercation at a bar and injured a bar manager in the process. The punishment for Maualuga would be worse if there was alcohol involved and judging by the fact that bars serve alcohol (that's pretty much all they do), it would be a safe bet that there was.
If Maualuga is charged, it would be a second violation in two years under the personal conduct policy and if it was alcohol related, it could be worse. After his DUI in Covington two years ago, Maualuga was placed in stage one of the league's Alcohol and Substance Abuse program. He appealed a one-game suspension and instead was fined two game checks ($46470.58) and part of his signing bonus. That falls in line with the suspensions outlined in an agreement between the league and its players.
Said a league spokesman at the time: "Rey Maualuga of the Cincinnati Bengals has been fined two game checks and will forfeit an additional 2/17 of his signing bonus attributable to 2010 for an alcohol-related violation of law (DUI) that is also a violation of the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse."
Reedy went on to say that if Maualuga does get charged and alcohol is found to be involved, it would fall into the NFL's Substance Abuse Policy, which states: ""Discipline for a second or subsequent offense is likely to be a suspension, the duration of which may escalate for repeat offenses."

"judging by the fact that bars serve alcohol (that's pretty much all they do), it would be a safe bet that there was."
could he have been there because its part of a club too?
i mean there is more to a bar than drinking, i get thats the main point to go to a bar, but people do go out and enjoy the night life without drinking.
if he gets charged with punching someone, i bet its a 3 game suspencion. I.E. Ced benson case, where he was supposed to be suspended for 3 games but was only served a one game supspension because of the strike.
AMAS85 - February 10, 2012
Correct me if I'm wrong, but
They do not make the player’s name in the substance abuse program available to the public until he has violated it (3 times? maybe 2) and then they receive a suspension. We would be at that point with Maualuga and 4 games is what Odell Thurman received, right? Next violation would be a year or ban from the NFL.

i think reedy is implying this inccident will fall under the NFL personaly conduct policy which is seperate than there substance abuse policy
which could lead to a year supension, if he is even charged with that, because there are no official reports saying he was drinking. So, he will probably at least get a 3 game suspension if he is convicted of the assult and will probably have an opportunity to have it reduced.
still kinda early since there are no police reports out yet.
AMAS85 - February 10, 2012
yay
if rey gets suspended for any part of the 2012 season, its time to replace him.
palewook - February 10, 2012
maybe a blessing in disguise.
Rey didn’t have a great season. We aren’t paying him that much money. this is his second hiccup. I’m just a fan I try and understand positions and schemes but am terrible at that. Could Howard play Middle and have Rivers take back weak? I know skuta would be the first option but I’d rather have Rivers and Howard on the field together then skuta/rivers or skuta/howard.
cincybengals - February 10, 2012
Muckelroy is still an unknown
Looks like he may get his chance. We have a few LB’s so they will probably look in house to fill the possible gap.
Bigcatdaddy - February 10, 2012 via Android app
yea muckelroy.
he flew my mind for a second. He will most certainly have a shot. I just would rather have rivers and howard on the field at the same time somehow. I know that may be immature of me to think that howard will have NO problems at MLB but I can dream. I wonder how muckelroys achilles is?
cincybengals - February 10, 2012
its time to sign a MLB in FA
Tulloch would be awesome in cincy as our starting MLB. toss rey on the bench or trade him. its past time for rey to be done in cincy.
palewook - February 10, 2012
I just would hate to add MLB on to the list of what we need this offseason.
this sucks. I know we were maybe looking for a replacement anyway
cincybengals - February 10, 2012
I wouldn't say it's past time for Rey to be done here...
but if he continues acting like an idiot offseason after offseason then sure.
dstacify - February 10, 2012
2 out of 3 off seasons
Is not enough to show what someone is made of ?
Yarin - February 10, 2012
It's irritating yes...
but we’ve got too much invested in him unfortunately to simply show him the door after only three seasons. Realistically, I don’t think it will happen, not this year anyways. Plus, as I recall, with Slim it took a lot more issues with the law before we finally cut him and when he was brought back for the 2008 and 2009 seasons most of us were quite happy to have him in the lineup, for the 2009 season anyways.
dstacify - February 10, 2012
I agree
It also helped that Slim produced on the field when he got his chances, when it came to the fans. I do think they won’t let him go either, but only because MB will see it as a way to get a player on the cheap.
Yarin - February 10, 2012
has there been charges filled or an arrest made?
i think we are getting ahead of our selfs here. Is the manager a person you would trust with your money or kids? if you can’t answer that question, than how can you take his side of the story without knowing all the facts?
AMAS85 - February 10, 2012
Rey what are you doing?
I agree lets get a GOOD middle linebacker….I said it before we got the 2 bad USC linebackes….Houston and Greenbay got the good ones….There will be some good middle linebackers where we pick in the draft and in free agency …move Rey back to the outside or bench him…..This year he was slow and fat, with no quickness….How can he be a starter unless its based on hype alone.
Tim8194 - February 10, 2012
unfortunately
Tons of #58 jerseys were sold and that alone is all that MB needs to keep a player around. No matter how bad he plays.
Yarin - February 10, 2012
A blessing in disguise...
Thanks Rey, hopefully you just expedited the removal process from our LB corp. This would be the perfect excuse the Bengals would need to get rid of him without causing to much of an uproar with most fans.
Thanks buddy, ole’ pal…..
Yarin - February 10, 2012
He was pretty good for us his first season, but now he has to go.
If he played incredible this season it would have been different, but he played anything but mediocre.
WhoDey3626 - February 10, 2012
Get ready Skuta
Hoke Hogan - February 10, 2012 via mobile
Indeed
Between Skuta, Muck, and Evans, I’m interested to see who can step up.
I’d rather not draft a MLB, with all the other needs we have, and the candidates we already have for the position. But if that Boston College guy falls to us, and DeCastro and Richardson are both gone, I have to admit…it’d be tempting.
Big Sky Bengal - February 10, 2012
I want Luke Kuechly at 17
Then best o-line or CB or RB at 21; either Glenn, Gilmore, or Martin/Miller
DTFCPDX - February 10, 2012
Remind me again...
why we forced a class act like Dhani out of here for this guy? This is turning into Odell Thurman all over again and I absolutely don’t wanna see another Odell Thurman-type personality on this team.
dstacify - February 10, 2012
No Prejudgment
I realize that professional athletes can sometimes be accosted by fans angry at how they played or that they mke a lot of money. They can also be mistreated by restaurant s and club owners attempting to make a name for themselves. Still others, are looking to get “paid” taking advantage of a situation by causing an incident.
As for his play at MLB, I didn’t think it was great largely because it was his first year in that position as a pro. So if he is to be traded I can only hope we get good value.
Rey may be one of those people who are hotheads when drinking and think he’s larger than life.
We will just have to see how this all plays out, ’human frailties being what they are".
Law1951 - February 10, 2012
Essentially this is Cedric Benson all over again...
I just hope he doesn’t have to do jail time for this. The point is guys like Rey, Ced, and Pacman clearly need to stay away from bars period because it sounds to me like they always seem to find fights and then a plethora of legal issues. It’s really quite irritating to hear about.
dstacify - February 10, 2012
no its really not at this point because nothing has been made of this besides alligations
people are getting ahead of themselves here.
AMAS85 - February 10, 2012
Not so much an irritation, but, sisuations like this, and all the negative comments are saddening.
Cause he’s in celeb status. If it were you or I it would’nt be a blip on a local paper.
I know guys who hard workers and honest people but “are” hot heads when drinking and always get into crap every time they go out! But, they are just hard working class guys…
Seems only the celeb’s rate “our” collective scrutiniy, charachter assaination, and judgement.
Law1951 - February 10, 2012
Guess the story's told now...
He got charged with assault.
Law1951 - February 14, 2012
he's now moving into BUST territory
Lot of hype… negative grade from PFF… problem child. They f-cking need to STOP drafting these guys. There’s a reason his draft stock fell… he was NOT a bargain pick.
occams_tiger_teeth - February 10, 2012 via mobile
They just put up a video on youtube
Of the guy Rey hit talking to 700WLW. We’ll I guess we just got another hole to fill.
