Cornerback Stanford Routt was released by the Raiders last Thursday, adding one more experienced and talented corner to this year's deep free agent class. Routt had signed a $54.5 million, five-year deal last summer, but was unable to maintain a high level of play once (former) shutdown cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha left in free agency to the Philadelphia Eagles. That deal also included $20 million guaranteed, meaning that the Raiders truly swallowed hard and lost a large chunk of money for nothing.
Routt has reportedly drawn interest from many teams around the league, one of those being the Bengals, who are hosting Routt today for a visit today (as Jason mentioned on Wednesday). Routt had visited the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday, the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday and Thursday, and will also be visiting the Dallas Cowboys and the Tennessee Titans in the future, according to Jason La Canfora.
Routt is in a unique situation because he was released before free agency officially begins on March 13. That means he can be signed before March 13, giving him a leg up because he's one of only a few players visiting teams right now.
If you see him around town, tell him how much Cincinnati rocks your socks, but also remind him that he needs to cut down on the penalties. He led the entire league in 2011 with 17 penalties called.

Wonder if Hue Jackson coming back will help in the pursuit of Routt....

Cincinnati Bengals
@Bengals Team announces former #Bengals WR coach and ex-Raiders HC Hue Jackson is joining Bengals as asst. coach helping secondary and special teams.
Jason Blanton - February 17, 2012
Dont like that
But a former HC helping secondary and ST cant be all bad
keithp - February 17, 2012
Phenomenal
Thanks a lot. Let’s grab Branch, Routt, and Hue and laugh about it. Not to mention, this could be a move to snatch Mike Bush up as well and bring him close to home.
whodeycommish14 - February 17, 2012 via mobile

this seems to prove when he made the Palmer trade…he was thinking ahead, no???? lmao, guess he got the last laugh!!!
joeb69 - February 17, 2012

Bengalsfan024 - February 17, 2012
he may be here to help d and st
but, you know he’s also gonna be working with the WR’s, it’s inevitable…he made Chad and Housh who they are!!!
joeb69 - February 17, 2012
Looking at their careers after they left
im happy hes here..
(just saying worded funny)
James Urban and Hue now the big question is who is the #2 wr
Bengalsfan024 - February 17, 2012
Steve Johnson will be the #2WR
if Jackson can deal with Chad, Steve would be taken under his wings and put him in line so he dont do anything wrong
Touhue Cha - February 17, 2012
Please Please bring Stevie Johnson to the Bengaldome
Diesel2405 - February 17, 2012
No reason why he shouldn't be able to offer incite
if asked to.
whodeycommish14 - February 17, 2012 via mobile

TX Bengal - February 18, 2012
Can't hurt bringing Hue over....
we might pull another one over on the Raiders…..twice in one year! They are FA’s, but still……
The Van Buren Boys - February 17, 2012
Yup
Just saw him and Zim eating lunch over at Montgomery Inn.
whodeycommish14 - February 17, 2012 via mobile

whodeycommish14 - February 17, 2012 via mobile
did you say hi and welcome him to our Bengals?
or did you pretend not to know who he was?
joeb69 - February 17, 2012
Haha
Obviously I walked by. They were eating. I’ll tell you what though, Routt is a big boy. Good size corner.
whodeycommish14 - February 17, 2012 via mobile
Hopefully he calls his boy Branch to come to Cincy too!
The Van Buren Boys - February 17, 2012
Huff and Routt+ Jackson and we'll be good
Touhue Cha - February 17, 2012
i'd like to have Routt
for depth. i think Zimmer could clean up the penalties. great move before free agency even starts
Jason Blanton - February 17, 2012
does anyone know
if Routt has a twitter account that we can bombard him on wishing him luck and hoping he joins our Bengals???
joeb69 - February 17, 2012
Haha I would just google it
whodeycommish14 - February 17, 2012 via mobile
@sroutt26
Jason Blanton - February 17, 2012
thanks, I'm not on twitter...yet
but I might just make an account for free agency this year…;)
joeb69 - February 17, 2012
Does this mean D and Huge get 1 of those first round picks?
I would say it was his first rounder let him carry the card up
Bengalsfan024 - February 17, 2012
Man lately it seems we dumped our problems
Palmer / Chad / TJ (2 of the 3 went to the raiders)
which we call bengals west occasionally
and then we end up wanting abunch of raiders.
Bengalsfan024 - February 17, 2012
seems like
“fair” trades to me…lol
joeb69 - February 17, 2012
i'm really liking today so far
Head coach in the league helping out our special teams and secondary? He is over qualified for the position. I also like that we are at least talking with Routt. He would be a great number 2 or 3 corner.
cincybengals - February 17, 2012
+1, this is a nice start to FA/Draft.
Our coaching staff is as stacked as I can remember it (Marvin haters would disagree of course), but I am happy with. Would not be surprised if we do sign Routt with Jackson coming here.
The Van Buren Boys - February 17, 2012
with hue helping the secondary...
it seems almost like a perfect fit with routt and or branch
cincybengals - February 17, 2012
Would be huge to get Branch here......
The Van Buren Boys - February 17, 2012
Hmm...
Funny how Hugh gets hired on the same day Routt is scheduled to visit in Cincy…. coincidence?:)
Makebelieve - February 17, 2012 via mobile
Waiting....Waiting.....I think not!
The Van Buren Boys - February 17, 2012
change-a-coming
Wow! I said it this past season, I will repeat it now, these are not the same old Bengals, trade Carson no.1 and no.2, drafting Andy instead of another Quarter back, Brady’s back-up. Marvin is really making crucial personal moves that helps this team improve, We had 4 players in the pro bowl, all younger than 25. We’ve heard that the team has made offers to potential free agents Rucker and Fanene, They signed rb Ronnie Brown from Detroit, has cb. Stanford Routt visiting today, hired Hue Jackson to staff that will a depth to scouting and teaching football talent . All of this before free-agency and the draft! Tell me Bengal fans is this our Daddy’s Bengals
Keith Call425 - February 17, 2012
Unfortunately its Aaron and not Ronnie, wish you were right on that point
Gold Star Chili Cheese Fries - February 17, 2012 via mobile
Secondary Fix
Resign Nelson
Either Landry or Huff
Routt
1st Round Pick – either one depending how it falls – plus one or two later picks for secondary
Resign A Jones if they they think he can play, get a long, and return punts
Pretty realistic and not too expensive fix – thougths?
