They wouldn’t sign JJo for 49 million for 5 years. I hope they realize their mistake … but it’s hard to imagine them signing a FA for more money than their own guy who they let walk away.

I was just working off of the contract that Asomugha got. He might not quite make it that high, but I bet it’ll be in that range though – more than Joseph, but less than Asomugha.

Carr will likely pursue Brandon Flowers money (six years, $49.35 million) at the very least.

Hall needs to restructure his contract or Clements needs to be cut. We need a sure fire #1 corner on our team. With the way the league us now u really need two #1 cbs. We gotta stop being cheap and pay the right price to get best players that fit system our system.

Finding 2 #1 CB’s. Every team would love 2 #1’s they are just not that easy to find. Clements is fine but you may be right about Hall depending on how he can back from his injury

This is a cop-out response,

but let’s see what the market is for both of them. This question’s tough to answer without knowing what these guys are asking for.

I’m kind of thinking Nicks, just because the draft is super-deep at corner. It’s deeper than usual at guard, but drafting a guard in the second or third in addition to signing Nicks would still work well. If we signed Carr, we could still take a corner somewhere too, but we’d have to really hope for DeCastro falling to us. He’s the only pro-ready NFL starting guard in the draft, except for possibly Cordy Glenn, who might be a reach at No. 21. There are four or five NFL-ready starting corners in the draft (Claiborne, Kirkpatrick, Jenkins, Gilmore, maybe Dennard).

Wow. The market prices for free agent corners just skyrocketed. Routt is an average – to – good corner, at best. If he gets close to $20M over 3 years, what will Carr, Finnegan, Grimes command??

For me, if this team is set on making a big splash FA signing, an elite guard (who can be had for around $8-9M/season) brings the most value. Routt will be earning close to $6.67M annually. For about $1-2M/season, an elite, All-Pro guard (Carl Nicks) can probably be had.

I think he's better than most of us our giving him credit for

My understanding is a lot of his penalties were questionable calls but how many people on here have really watched him play. In fact, I looked at the KC board last week saw more than a few comments saying they wouldn’t love it but they would be OK with him replacing Carr in there secondary.

I hope the KC fans are smarter than that. lol

He would be our #1cb without a doubt. Leon got paid #1 money and he has was a#2. And we tried to sign JJoe last year so were not scared to pay for two #1 caliber cb.

Hall was worth the money at the time

The injury changes that in hindsight, but at the time it was the right move.

And he wasn’t overpaid either. He was appropriately paid less than Joseph was in Houston and made our defense significantly better (as we saw when after he went out).

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bengals target OG, S, and WR, and go the FA route with CB….

I think we go after a WR mostly and maybe a safety. I want us to go after a OG but I don’t see it happening. It’s just so much to spend on a position that isn’t consider sexy. I mean, they’d be spending more money on a G than their LT. Just seems like something they wouldn’t do. At least not Nicks.

Whitworth extened his contract for two more seasons last year

Which will pay him $20M over those last two seasons (2014 and 2015). That’s a $10M average for those two years. Therefore, and at least for those last two seasons of Whitworth’s contract, he will still earn more than a top tier FA guard (Nicks or Grubbs), who will probably earn around $8-9M / season.

I think alot of people are really under estimating how difficult it is to find a quality CB. Even if we draft early they will still be unproven in the NFL and you don’t know if they’ll pan out all you have to do is look at Kelly Jennings who was taking in the first round and might be the worst CB I’ve seen since the days of Rod Jones and Keiwan Ratliff.

It doesn't make much sense to me.

Why would KC want so much money invested into the CB position. They gave Flowers an extension at 5 years/$50 million, now Routt at 3 years/$20 million, and they STILL plan on signing Carr? That’s absolute stupidity if you ask me.

I expect Carr to hit FA.

Carr is only 25 too, strange.....would've thought between Flowers/Carr/Berry at S they would have been set.

How good is Carr and what do you think he is worth on the open market?

I tihink he is really good, he had to deal with a lot of #1 wr last year 'cause he play in the right side always, doesn't matter if the #1 or #2 wr was there.

Some of the fans thinks that he is better than Flowers, ‘cause he didn’t allow many big plays, maybe flowers is better in stats with picks, but Carr came out with a few of those last year. He is a really good cb and was a steal in the 5th round. You may not see him frecuently in posts or comments but that’s very good ‘cause normally when you see comments about a cb mostly are bad ’cause maybe that cb gave a big play or something. His stats doesn’t show how good he is, and we are hoping that he stays but we also know that he wants his big pay ‘cause playing with a 5th round contract is not worthy knowing how he is playing and is better for him and his family, ’cause the chiefs aren’t willing to pay #1 money for him.

I think he is worth the same money that the chiefs pay to flowers.

Why don't we sign CB Terell Thomas???

He tore his ACL last year, but was a very good corner..and the Giants may not re sign him…& we could probably get him somewhat cheap.

He put up ridiculous numbers the 2 years prior to his injury. Giants have some free agents and not that much cap room. We could just steal Nicks, Porter and Meachem and turn into the Saints of the north.

He had 186 tackles, 2 sacks, 34 passes defensed, 10 int and 5 forced fumbles the last 2 years he has played. Those are some great numbers.

This is just the start

Something tells me we will be reading posts about big time FA’s coming to visit and then signing elsewhere all this offseason.
We love the Bengals so we see things differently. Cincinnati is considered a bottom rung, last chance place to land. Unless we over pay for top FA’s we won’t see any of them here. I’ll bet on that.

Money talks and we have a lot of it. Gotta start using it on somebody between this year and next....

we will have to pay more than a bigger market team, but for once we can afford to do so.

But I certainly wouldn’t consider Standford Routt a “big time FA”. When he’s at his best, he is very good, but he is by no means a true, #1 shutdown corner (thus, I wouldn’t consider him a big time FA).

I just don’t see it with any big name FA.
MB doesn’t have to spend that money this season, we just assume he will.
When a player like Carson Palmer walks away from a huge contract to retire instead of coming back, it sends a message to other players. When you don’t resign a player like J Joe because of a little extra cash, it sends a message. MB is cheap.
Why would any big FA think that MB will keep the pieces we do have in place around long enough to be a contender year after year?

Parity- That is what makes the NFL so great.
We think we have an up-and-coming team. So do 31 other franchises and in many ways we are all right. Most teams are a couple pieces away from competing year in and year out.

It wasn’t so long ago that the Saints were considered a horrible place to land. Remember the “Aints” for so many years. The Saints got Drew Brees, by luck, and it changed the franchise. We will have to build from the inside before guys will change their minds about Cincy.

I have history on my side when it comes to watching this franchise and how it operates. I hate to be a downer about things but I chose not to act like I am naive about these things either.
If we over pay we can get some guys, but we still have MB writing the checks so goodluck thinking he will suddenly change.

I think most players in the league think of Carson Palmer for what he is:

A Quitter.

The Quitter was interviewed by Deion Sanders on the NFL Network aftér the trade and Deion essentially told Carson that other players around the league were telling Deion that Carson was getting a pass from the media for quitting on the Bengals. Deion flat-out told Carson that many current NFL players thought Carson quit on his team. Shannon Sharpe told Carson the same thing in a CBS ore-game interview. From this, it is pretty clear that current NFL players view Carson as a pure and simple Quitter, and didn’t look at The Quitter’s situation as an indictment against the franchise.

While I agree that history shows us that the Bengals FA activity is generally tepid, this is not the 90s anymore.

Free Agents want guaranteed money and a chance ti play for a good team, generally speaking. The Bengals can offer both, and while, yes, the minimum cash spend requirement is not until next year, why wait until next year when you would be “forced” to spend it, instead of starting to spend is wisely this year on a couple of targeted free agents like Nicks/Grubbs and Meachem.

I just think that all things considered it all makes a difference. If several teams offer the same money to a player things such as " hmm.. Carson is a quitter, but why did he want to quit?" has to come into play. It’s human nature. When ESPN is always talking nothing but bad about our organization it makes a difference. Players watch ESPN.
I am not talking FA’s with few options, I am talking big name guys who can go anywhere. That is why I don’t think we can pull down guys like Nicks or Carr with out over paying them.
That is what hurts so much about losing our own players to FA. They are here and know that it’s not as bad as the “outside” thinks it is. See Andrew Whitworth signing long term. J Joe even stated he wanted to come back but we know now that MB cheaped out on him. ( I happen to agree with MB on this one though).
J Joe didn’t do anything in Houston he hadn’t done most of his time in Cincy. He makes the Pro Bowl in Houston but not in Cincy. Let’s face it had The Patriots lost in the play-offs sooner 3 of our 4 Pro Bowlers would not have been Pro bowlers at all.
Things like that matter, no matter what people want to believe. Pro Bowls give players another bargaining tool come contract time.

I can harp on this garbage all day but I am already a negative writer about things anyway and I really don’t want to be. I love the Bengals, I just want them to win.

I always get mad when I read these type of headlines during free agency. He chose a bad KC team over an up and coming Bengals squad. Interesting. I was pretty confident that he’d land here.

I’m really hoping that this isn’t a sign of things to come in free agency. Given the team’s reputation, many of you seem to be correct in the observation that the Bengals will have to overpay for players to get them here. Sad.

We don't know for sure if the Bengals even offered him a contract.

Sure, they invited him in for a visit, but that does not always mean an offer gets extended to the visiting player by the team hosting him. In other words, when a player agrees to visit a team, it does not necessarily mean that the team already has an contract offer in hand, ready to present it to the player as soon as thw player sets foot off the plane. Sometimes, a visit is just a visit with no offer. I don’t think there is a news report which says the Bengals definitely offered Routt a contract.

What would be the reasoning for Cincy to bring him in if they didn’t plan to try and sign him? So they can make the fan base think they have changed? Everything you need to know about a FA is already on film, nothing they say, outside of “I don’t want to play for you” would change their minds.

It's not uncommon

For guys to visit teams and not get offered contracts. It could have been just a feeler for both sides to see if it would even work with playing time and system. Also, it could have been set up by the agent to possibly drive the price up for a team that was really interested.

An invite (I.e. A team visit) is essentially like a job interview for a normal player. Thw team wants to get to know them before extending an offer. Meet with some coaches to test their football IQ, take them to lunch/dinner to get to know what type of person they are, etc. It is quite common for an invite to happen and no offer be extended.

Besides, please provide a link that reports the Bengals, did, in fact, offer Routt a contract.
