Bengals rookie quarterback Andy Dalton will have to wait at least one more season before he receives his first award from the NFL. Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has won the offensive rookie of the year award. Newton received 47 first place votes, while Dalton had three first place votes. While Dalton helped lead the Bengals to the playoffs in his rookie year, Newton had far better numbers than Dalton. Dalton had 20 touchdown passes and passed for 3,398 yards, while Newton had 21 touchdown passes and threw for 4,051 yards. Those numbers seem to be close enough to sway the award to the guy that took his team to the playoffs. The statistics that put Newton over Dalton were undoubtedly his 706 rushing yards and his NFL record 14 rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.

No matter which of these young quarterbacks won the award, both seem to be farther ahead than most expected they would be at this point. Dalton may have fell just short on winning the award, but getting his team into the playoffs almost certainly overshadows that. A full off season working with offensive coordinator Jay Gruden and quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese can only help Dalton further his development and get closer to achieving his own award.

I'll say it again.....

I would rather have Dalton..period…Newton wont get those stats in this division….period

I agree !!

Newton play’s in a week division. Plus they changed the offense to to make it easy on him.He didn’t even get them to the playoffs.Dalton had really young recievers and a new OC with a totally new play book.AFC North teams were all in the top five at one time.Newton would have got carried off the field in our division. He did good ,but Dalton had to over come more and played just as good if not better.Did you here the fans booing Newton at the pro bowl – HE SUCKED Just like the NFL to give it to this guy. GO RED RIFLE——WHO DEY

uhhh

The falcons and saints are WEAK?

I was thinking the same thing.

I think the only divisions that can really be considered weak right now are the NFC West and the AFC West.

I would say that the NFC South is actually neck in neck with the NFC north as the toughest division in the NFC.

Compare the AFC North against the NFC South for the last several years and you’ll see they’re comparable most years.

Yes, this season the AFC North ended up with 3 playoff teams, but last years NFC South had 3 10 win teams.

Lol

None of the other Quarterback outside of our division would get the same stats. Our division is like the SEC in college. All about great defenses.

He's #14 in your program but #1 in our hearts

The Red Rifle Andy Dalton! I’ll take W’s over any other stat all day. Cam can have his ROY trophy but I bet Dalton will get the one that matters most before Cam.

I agree

I strongly believe that our boy Dalton the red rifle will bring us our first Super Bowl.

Newton

is well deserving of this award. Never got why some people feel it’s a slight when others say Cam Newton had a great rookie season, because he did. Personally, I feel those 3 other first place points went to the wrong Bengal rookie.

cam had sweet FF numbers

But dalton had the stats that matters most-wins (an first rookie to EVER start the whole season and make the playoffs)

yet Brees had better FF nbers than Rodgers

But Rodgers won MVP….bc of wins

On a better team

Newton’s Panthers won 5 more games than last year, just like Dalton’s Bengals. The wins argument is invalid.

Matt Ryan and Flacco did it too there rookie years..playoffs

BULLSHIRT!!!

Andy got ripped off!

Andy didn't get ripped off

A.J. Green did. I don’t believe andy would have did so go if didn’t have a guy that he could just throw the ball up and A.J. would jump over everyone and bring it down.

Your right

If Dalton didn’t have AJ it woudl be a different conversation

Cam deserved the ROY award – had better year for a weaker team – by about two steps

That’s not a knock on Dalton – he is the real deal – Cam was just better

Time will tell if Cam is better.

I really think that Dalton will get a ring before Cam does though.

I agree with that

I diffidently think Dalton will end up better. He is better all around quarterback. Team will figure Cam out soon and hell end up like Vince Young was. I really believe also that Dalton will bring us our first ring.

+1

I have been a fan since before many posters here were born. I think Dalton has what it takes to take the Bengals to the Promised Land.

I'll bet you that the AP voters don't know that...

Cam started one game against a top-5 passing defense (HOU) while Andy started seven games against the top 4 passing defenses in the regular season! PIT twice, CLE twice, HOU once, and BAL twice.

Andy would have had a decent chance to log another 653 yds passing if he had faced as any bull***t passing defenses as Cam did.

you don't think...

that playing in a division with the Saints and 49ers influenced the pass defense numbers of those teams?

Way too much anger here about this.

Without looking, how many people can even name the last 10 ROTY’s? Brady wasn’t a ROY. Know who was ROTY? Vince Young.

Ridiculous

That anyone thinks playing in the AFC north would throw Cam Newton’s stats way off. The Browns are very average against the pass. Only play 4 games against the Steelers and Ravens. So…that’s 12 games against normal competetion. Dalton was decent against the Ravens and Steelers anyway. Pure silliness. Take your bengals-colored glasses off. Cam Newton was awesome.

First off

The Browns finished in the top ten in pass d,so that wasnt average. Regardless of who they played,Cam put up great record breaking numbers. He set the record for most rushing tds ever by a qb and most yards passing by a rookie. He deserved ROY

6 games against tough D's

That would throw his stats off I’m sure. I’m not saying that Cam doesn’t deserve it because he does but say what you want Cleveland’s defense wasnt bad this year. Their offense was horrid but that’s a different story.

Cam puts up the same numbers in the AFC North?

You get your smoke from Jerome Simpson? They both played the Texans. Cam went 13-of-23 for 149 yds. Andy went 16-of-28 for 189 yds the week before. But Cam would drop 4000+ yds in the AFC North? facepalm

I never said Cam didn’t have a great year. I never said he didn’t deserve the award. I said that I’ll bet the AP voters have no idea how much more difficult of a schedule that Dalton played this year. If they did, Andy would have gotten more than 3 votes.

He would've gotten 4
I only have 2 words

Winning record!

Not saying that should get Dalton ROY

Just meaning winning record is what I care about.

improvement in number of wins was the same for Dalton as Newton, +5 vs last year
Yeah and I wasn't implying that Dalton's winning record

should get him ROY, just that the winning record is what I care about, and hopefully, although ROY would have been nice, what Dalton cares about too.

You guys buy into the hype too much

You act like we are in a division with the 85’ Bears, 02’ Bucs, and 00’ Ravens. Dalton’s rating was only 5 points lower in the division. He had 2 good games against the Browns, and his career high in yardage (373) came against the Ravens.

Whooptee-freaking-doo, Dalton won 3 more games than Cam. Are you not aware Andy had the 7th ranked defense backing him up? The Panthers defense? Ranked 28th. If you take off your orange colored glasses, common sense will tell you that’s why Andy won more games.

whooptee doo huh

troll on your own site…If you take off your entertainer and icon glasses you will see that Cam’s stats are from playing crappy defenses…..it goes both ways…but thanks for comin out and giving it a shot…goodnight…Cam should of won ROY based on stats..I wont argue that…but dont act like the playing field was equal, and the AFC North IS the toughest division in football….3 of 4 teams made playoffs….orange colored glasses…..FAIL

oh yeah

and what was Daltons road record….and how many COMEBACK wins did Dalton have….oh yeah…it was ALL because of his defense right,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Be Glad!!!!

That we have 2 of the finest rookies EVER in the same year to argue about. after watching ponder, gabbert, etc. stink up the field , it’s so great to see a game involving these 2 really exceptional talents that do not play like ordinary rookies! Although Andy [by the way, he hates the name Red Rifle] didn’t win the ROY, i bet if u asked the coaches in the nfl who they would take, they all would pick THE RIFLEMAN!!!! [CATCHY, HUH??!!!]

The Rifleman.....

Works for me.

okay. whoa.

not sure half your fanbase would make that choice.. let’s not go to speaking for coaches….

I think you're mistaken if you think even half the coaches in the NFL would take Dalton over Newton.

Dalton has a ton of talent, no doubt, but when a player breaks the rookie passing record, and sets some non rookie records in his rookie season, that’s a special player as well.

To look at the wins alone isn’t telling the entire story. Newton came on to a team and took them from the worst offensive team in football, and put them a top 5 team in scoring.
Carolina would certainly have had more wins if not for the fact that they ended the season with 18 players on injured reserve, 7 of them starters.

Before week 3, Carolina had lost 2/3 of the starting LBs, and 1 of the starting DTs.

Now, as this award is an OFFENSIVE rookie of the year award, Compare the 2 QBs.

Dalton, 3,398 yards passing, 6.6 yards per attempt, 20 TDs, 13 INTs, 152 rush yards, 2 TDs, 2 lost fumbles.
Newton, 4,051 yards passing, 7.8 yards per attempt, 21 TDs, 17 INTs, 706 rush yards, 14 TDs, 2 lost fumbles.

Essentially, the stats say that Newton threw 1 more pick every 4 games, and he also scored 1 TD more per game(technically, .9375 TDs per game).

Agreed

Cam Newton was awesome and deserves this award. People be happy we got AJ and Dalton instead of just Cam, we won the draft and buikding a better TEAM. Carolina has a star, give him his credit and we r set up to take over one of the best divisions in football with cap space and 2 first round picks.
