Mock Draft Has Bengals Trading Up To Select Trent Richardson

The end of the NFL season brings sadness to many fans of the game, but it can also bring happiness. Part of the happiness that I speak of is the NFL draft. The draft should bring even more excitement than usual to Bengals fans this year, thanks to the Carson Palmer trade, Cincinnati has two first round picks at number 17 and number 21. Some have suggested that the Bengals should take advantage of the extra picks and move up in the draft. The folks at Mocking the Draft, an SB Nation site, have the Bengals doing just that.

The first round mock at MTD has the Bengals trading up to the Dolphins spot at number eight and selecting Alabama running back Trent Richardson. The Bengals would trade their number 17 pick and their second round pick in order to move to number eight. With the Bengals pick at number 21, MTD has the team selecting Wisconsin offensive lineman Peter Konz. Konz played center at Wisconsin, but many expect him to move to guard in the NFL.

Star-divide

8. The Cincinnati Bengals select: Trent Richardson, Running Back, Alabama.

The Dolphins were hoping that Couples would have fallen to them to help the transition back to the 4-3. But with him gone, the Dolphins take a slight loss in trade value to drop back. The Bengals take opportunity of a pretty good deal on their half to move up to 8 and fill a huge need for them. With Cedric Benson a free agent, the Bengals need a running back. Trent Richardson has some scouts saying he's better than Adrian Peterson was when he came out. I'm not sold on that, but Richardson is very good in his own right. He can run with power, but also has that elusiveness that makes him incredibly hard to bring down. Add him to the Bengals running attack and he takes a load off of Andy Dalton's shoulders.

The Bengals seem to have the luxury of deciding if trading up to get a Trent Richardson or a David DeCastro is worth it. Is trading a second round pick to move up going to hurt depth? Some will say that a running back isn't worth trading up to get, even for a back with the capability of Richardson. Others will say that sacrificing a second round pick is well worth it if Richardson is as good as advertised. No matter what you think about the picks, MTD certainly addressed the Bengals mediocre running game and attempted to improve the offensive line.

Konz could be a good fit in Cincinnati because of his versatility that the Bengals coaches seem to covet out of their big boys up front. As for Konz, MTD writes:

21. The Cincinnati Bengals select: Peter Konz, Center/Guard, Wisconson.

Having already traded up for Richardson, the Bengals use their second 1st round pick on an offensive lineman to help block for him. Konz was one of the best centers in college football last year, but might be a little tall for the center position in the NFL so could be moved to Guard. Either way he provides versatility and should be a solid starter day one.

The excitement is quickly building for the NFL draft. The combine in Indianapolis is just over two weeks away, while the start of free agency is just over a month away. The NFL season has ended, but another season has just begun.

Yep

That says it all.

Throw the ball, run moderately,

build up the offense line and rush the hell out of the QB on defense.

I'm good with all these things, but

I would like to run just a little more than moderate.

Unless your moderate consists of a running game where the RB has the ability to take it to the house from 50+ yards.

I think they need to

convert 3rd and short at a higher percentage, and be able to run in the red zone better… I am more in the camp that a better interior O-line can get that done without risking trading up for running back.

I agree

I do not want to trade up at all.

Guess we will really see how much control Marvin has this draft.

All for Richardson. But will adding a 2nd rounder really move us up that much?

No thanks

+1
yeah...not liking that decision
agreed

That trade would be a disaster in terms of overall value taken from the draft. TR is good, but not 1st + 2nd round pick good.

I do not see this team trading a round 1-3 pick.

Maybe something from the 4th round out, but too many holes. Quantity over perceived quality.

I wouldn't mind

trading a 1st round pick for more picks. Like trade away the 17th for a later 1st rounder and a another 2nd.

wouldnt mind that either
then you CERTAINLY don't see trading a 1-2 as this draft suggests.

I would be ok with a 1-3 or a 1-4 but NOT a 1-2

We need to keep our picks

and add good players now. Especially through the FA. We are on the verg of something great.

and something tells me we would have to trade way more than that to get a number 8 pick

look at what the falcons had to trade to get a number five pick:

“their 1st- (27th overall), second- (59th) and fourth-round (124th) picks this year and their first- and fourth-round picks in 2012.”

Trent is a beast, but i don’t think he is worth, a Jermaine gresham, an Andy dalton, A Domata Peko, An AJ green and a Rudi Johnson. Ya dig?

Nope
If they would take next yrs Oak pick I would do it

It’s a 2nd rnd pick that could turn into a 1st. We all know it’s not going to be a 1st and this trade would give us Richardson.

No thanks.

I’m good on that trade.

trade up*
No thanks

I don’t think a RB is worth a 1st round pick, much less a 1st and a 2nd. We have too many holes to fill. I have seen just as many 1st round RB’s become busts as I have seen them become great. Ala Reggie Bust. don’t tell me he is different because I remember all the hype surrounding the can’t miss Bush too. Not to mention Benson and Ricky Williams and even Mark Ingram. The vast majority of backs in this league are not top picks— No thanks.

If we can move up into the top 10 without giving up our 2nd first round pick...

Assuming Richardson is THE guy that Gruden wants, that’s a steal. But this whole thing seems far fetched. They don’t have a CB coming off the board after Claiborne until 23? And it’s Kirkpatrick? When was the last time THAT happened? If we’re looking at Kirkpatrick, Jenkins, Dennard, AND Gilmore at 21 I dont’ think there’s a chance in the universe we take the 3rd interior lineman of the round. Some of these mocks you just have to laugh at…

^This

If they move up that high, I’d rather that they picked DeCastro, grabbed a Kirkpatrick at 21 and then get the best RB in the third.

If we keep our 2nd

And maybe just swap 1st and give up our 3rd that seems okay. We would get the best RB in the draft and he will be a game changer and get a lineman and DB in the 1st 2 rnds. That’s what everyone wants anyway but I don’t see it happening. They would want more than just a 3rd.,

Also, for all of those people dead set against any kind of trade...

Assuming we get a comp for JJo (I think we do) then we are going to have 5 picks in the first 3 rounds this year and another 6 picks in the last 4 rounds. you aren’ trading a 4th round pick to move up 10 spots in the first round. Yeah, we have holes, but we also don’t have NEARLY enough roster spots to keep 11 draft picks. We should be looking at every possible opportunity to maximize value with this draft. We’re in some weird, rare Patriots territory this year and it isn’t going to happen often. I have no problem trading a late 2nd round pick to get the top RB in the draft when we still have two 3rd round picks waiting right behind it to pick up a couple linemen.

Could be wrong Eric...

…but I believe you have to lose more eligible FA’s then you gain to get compensatory picks. We signed a lot of UFA’s last year (Lawson, Howard, Scaife, Lee, Benson, maybe others). Not sure if we lost as many. If that’s correct, we probably won’t get a comp pick for Joseph.

It's my understanding there's some weight given to the performance of the FAs

Jjo making the Pro Bowl makes him worth more than just Manny Lawson or a Nate Clements. That’s my understanding anyway. Both Hobson an Lapham have said they expect us to get a third rounder. Then again I’ve also heard we won’t from other sources. At the very least it seems to be up in the air until the official announcement.

What I've gathered is that

JJ is the only free agent we lost that would be eligible for a comp selection. Therefore, no comp pick for us. Sucks because he would have easily been a 3rd rounder.

When's the announcement for comp picks?
No compensetory pick for Joseph because they signed more guys than they lost in FA

Dumb rule, but that’s how it is.

We won't do it

We never trade picks up.

we are more likely to trade down than up lol
The A.J. Green of RBs...

is this year’s draft. Yes please.

*in this year's draft.
Shocked there's so much opposition to this trade idea.

Giving up a second round pick to move up 9 spots is pretty reasonable for a guy many scouts are calling the best RB to come out since Adrian Peterson. He’s good at EVERYTHING and they still get a very good interior lineman.

I think people may be overrating CBs in this class not named Claiborne (though I think the SC kid is underrated), and misinterpreting need. You have a once-in-several-years RB that is a great fit, great player, I think you go after him if the price is right. I wouldn’t trade both 1st rounders for just Richardson, but 17 and the second rounder? I think I would.

Now, I might like a draft with DeCastro, Kirkpatrick/Barron, and Martin a little more, but I wouldn’t be opposed to the outcome in this post.

Actually, thought about this more. This trade is a no-brainer.

The ideal Bengals off-season, to me, is:

Re-Sign Manny Lawson (2 years), Pat Sims (2-3 years), Jonathan Fanene (2 years), Mike Nugent (2-3 years)
Think about extending Gresham, Atkins, Dunlap
Sign OG Carl Nicks
Sign CB Brandon Carr
Draft RB Trent Richardson (1a)
Draft SS Mark Barron (1b)
Draft WR Nick Toon or Marvin Jones or Ryan Broyles (3-4)
Draft OG Brandon Washington or OG Ryan Miller (3-4)
Draft BPA after that

this should be a fanpost, but I don’t see how this is bad at all.

We wouldn't need to trade up this far for Richardson or DeCastro

Just another mocker who didn’t know who to give to Miami

There are several teams that could take either of those players between 8 and 17

If the price is right and they want him badly enough, they would be wise not to just sit back and cross thier fingers.

They won't need to go above 10 Carolina & Buffalo don't need G or RB in 1st round
doesn't matter what spot they jump to

if the price is right. That’s a cheap price to move up 9 spots in the first. If there is really someone trying to sell their pick it’s not unrealistic to think they’ll take less at 8 than someone who really wants a player on the board at 10, especially if that player is someone who they think the Bengals are targetting.

Well

I dont care whos the RB, if you dont fix that OL your wastein your time, and pleaseee sign a legit MLB, Rey isnt the answer, the DB situation is a mess, and talk on Richardson is he may fall to us at 17 anyways, draft builds teams, we get Rivers back, Muck back, Hall back,Shipley back, I think you really need to discuss FA before the draft, you can get Bush in FA, and Meachem from the Saints at WR, get some Guards in here, lots a work to do to get this team back in the foward position, just curious, didnt anyone wanna see baby hawk do punts and kickoffs like I did, I really think you gotta give baby hawks a chance instead of watching a bad dance class at special teams, and bring Nugent back, just my opinion, you go FA first, and one more opinion, I think the best safety is already on this team, and thats Nate Clements, I really think he can deliever big hits as a safety and also cover, just some thoughts from a die hard Bengals Fan for 2012.

Would love Hawkins returning kicks it would free up a roster spot
We don't know what condition Hall will be in next year, best to get insurance for him.
I like where this is going

Too bad I’m late to the party, but I like this topic of whether it is worth it or not to trade up for Trent. Let’s break it down a little.

First off, there are people that say that there are too many holes. But having more high draft picks just means more chances of filling the holes. On the same token, a guy rated that highly as a prospect has an immense chance of not only filling the hole, but also helping to cover up other weaknesses. The reverse can be said about a great lineman of course, in that they can cover up for weakness in both RBs and QBs. The running back has thier own contributions to the pass game, and Richarson brings that in spades. But I digress. In any draft, it’s not the nuber of picks you have but how they are used. Getting a player who has a high probability of succeeding saves you future picks should they pan out.

Having enough options to give yourself a good chance of finding diamonds in the rough is also nice. Fro example, I like either Mays or Sands to fill one safety spot, and drafting another safety who falls could bring the percentage up more that the other hole can be filled with decent play. Taking a late 2nd rounder is risky, and banking on that player to immediately fill a hole can lead to disaster if you viewed that investment as worth giving up a sure thing in another area. Giving up a chance at one of the most sure prospects in the draft because you don’t want to part with a marginal probability of filling a hole within the next few years seems like an easy decision if you’re on the verge of contending. To a team like the Dolphins, it’s a different story.

The other factor to weigh here is what happens in free agency. I think it would make no sense for the Bengals to sit tight like they have done so many years prior, but I wouldn’t put it past MB either. Anyway, should some of the holes be addressed in free agency then there are less to worry about on draft day. Should solid to top level talent be added at that point, there would be more of an emphasis on making the picks count. That’s the case in any draft, it’s not the nuber of picks you have but how they are used. Getting a player who has a high probability of succeeding saves you future picks.

I would say that there is one prospect that is sure to fall into the Bengals laps between Richardson, DeCastro, Jenkins or Kirkpatrick and they will look like geniouses for standing pat. However, should Mikey take a stab at a quality free agent, then taking a wait and see approach could backfire.

I love Richardson, and would love to see the Bengals trade up. I feel the same about DeCastro. I would hope that free agency helps to fill a couple of holes though, and trading up to secure the player the Bengals want is at that point the better strategy.

NO WAY

wrong we are past the days when the Bengals would pull something like moving up to take a running back when other areas need attention. CB S G RB DE MLB WR FB but which areas will be addressed in FA ?

Draft

We have 3 picks out of the first 53.I would hope that those picks are starters not role players. The offensive line has to be addressed, then DB then LB. I know we need a running back but that line is horrible, improve that and you also improve the passing game.

Linebacker?

I’m not sure they need to address it early if they resign Lawson.

Will never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever happen

-Bengals rarely trade up.
-RB and G are 2 of the most undervalued positions in the draft by most teams and by the Bengals specifically.
- Either Richardson or DeCastro (or both) have been projected to fall to us at 17 anyway.
- The sweet spot in this years draft is round 2-3 for our areas of need.

Doesn’t make any sense. At all.

"Doesn’t make any sense. At all."

Shouldn’t that be an indication that it might happen?

Ba Dap Tish

One elite running back won't matter

if the team doesn’t rebuild the interior of the offensive line. He’ll be on his butt next to Dalton. This team needs two productive guards and a better center.l

We have too many needs.....

And there will be too many “good” players available for us to trade up. We need to keep adding as much talent as we can, and I think we’re better served to do that by taking quantity over quality here.

This will never happen!

We can get upgrades in RB in each of the first 3 rounds. There is no way Richardson is going to drop to us at 17, so it would make more sense to get our RB for the future in the 2nd round or maybe even with our 21st pick. We will have a chance to get Miller, Martin, and Pead. All of them would be great pick ups for our offense.

But i don’t want to trade away 5 picks with in the first 4 rounds for richardson. Not worth it at all. The falcons set the precident of trading 5(two 1st rd, one 2nd rd, two 4th rd) picks for a top 10 tallent.

The Falcons

Also traded from mid 20s up to #6. To get richardson, We’d be trading from 17 to about 10. Wouldn’t cost as many picks (NFL Draft value chart has #17 and our 2nd rounder worth pick #10) but I’m still opposed to making the move with the depth at RB.

well if it that list is something the league has to trade by, then I wouldn't mind that trade at all.

I would just trade our extra 2nd round pick we got from the raiders. That would be well worth it for richardson.

Trading up to geg Richardson is pointless until the offensive line is fixed.

Kyle Cook played decent last year. Cincy should look to draft at least two guards in this draft in case Boling is not ready.

If we got lucky enough to get TR

They would be forced to fix the O line. It would be just dumb not to he’s the best RB to come out since AP. They don’t come around every year so if he’s there you have to take him.

GET RICHARDSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

here’s a guy who plays in the toughest conference in college, doesn’t fumble, has great hands, durable and people say he’s not worth trading up for??!?!!!! let’s get serious here. this guy has a lot of similarities to emmitt smith. the cowboys wouldn’t have won 1 sb without him, He has size, speed, everything you want in a running back. if the bengals can get him , THEY SHOULD!!!!

Seriously

the opposition to this is astounding.

best use of opportunity

we should buy our offensive positions now. get the very best money can buy and draft our defensive slots and build our future through the defense. offensive positions are always available for short term deals.

Nope

If he falls to us at 17 great if not so be it, there is still going to be talent at RB later and we will still have out number 2 pick, give up nothing unless there is a gain to be had as in more pick’s.
